This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
Mother, please forgive me. I just have to get out all my pain and suffering. Now
that I am done, remember I will always love you. . .
I'm your son.
Little child, looking so pretty. Come out and play, I'll be your Daddy. Innocent
child, looking so sweet. Rape your mind, dear god your flesh I reep
You raped. I feel dirty. It hurt. As a child. Tied down. "That's a good boy."
And fuck. Your own child. I scream. No-one hears me. It hurt. I'm not a liar. My
God. Saw you watch. Mommy, why? Your own child.
Little child, looking so pretty. Come out and play, I'll be your Daddy
You raped. I feel dirty. It hurt. As a child. Tied down. "That's a good boy."
And fuck. Your own child. I scream. No-one hears me. It hurt. Not a lot. My
God. Saw you watch.
Mommy, why?
It's alright
"I didn't touch you there." Mommy said she didn't care.
"I didn't touch you there." That's why Momma stopped and stared.
Innocent child, looking so sweet. Rape your mind, and now your flesh I reap.
You raped. I feel dirty. It hurt. As a child. Tied down. "That's a good boy."
And fuck. Your own child. I scream. No-one hears me. It hurt. As a child. My
God. Saw you watch.
Mommy, why? {Eh heh heh }
I fucking hate you. . . AHHH you Mother Fucker!!!
I Fucking Hate YOU!!
FUCK YOU
You son of a bitch
You fucking ruined my life, I wish you were dead

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.
Some people have the notion that Jon Davis is full of shit because of the way he wrote the lyrics. How it seems like hes claiming his dad raped him, when his dad didn't rape him. But Im thinking he wrote it like that because he felt as if his own parents raped him. Because they would not believe him when he told them he was raped. He felt like his own mother was watching as he was being raped and his father was doin the rapein. Maybe he brang that scenario up to try to bring it to their attention, " Y'know the way you just ignored me like that, is kinda like you were sittin their watchin it happen. Lettin it happen. Like you didn't even care."
yepz... quote from Jon
"People think Daddy was written because my dad fucked me up the ass, but that's not what the song's about. It wasn't about my dad or my mom. When I was a kid I was being abused by someone else and I went to my parents and told them about it. They thought I was lying and joking around, so they never did shit about it. They didn't belive it was happening to their son." - Jonathan Davis
all the music, etc had been recorded before hand. jon was laying down the vocals. he started singing, and obviously he got very emotional. they kept recording because thats what he would want. jon is all about raw emotion and showing it how it is. at the very end of the song, after you hear the woman singing over his crying, you can hear him open the door to the studio and leave, because he had to get out of there. it was too much for him.
Harry manback, I think they asked before hand wether they could keep recording, and any way if Jonathan Davis wasn't happy with the recording they would of cut it any way. Personally I think the end of the song is a very important part of the song, it shows how much pain these experiences cause, and the whole song makes us a hell of lot more aware about abuse and what the effects of abuse can be. I think Jonathan Davis was very brave to put this song on the album and I hope like hell one day his pain will go but unfortunatly I don't think it ever will.
Poor Jon! ooo.. how could anyone let this happen to him?! it fuckin pisses me off. this song shows how much he was effected by that motherfucker and i think he should go to hell for what he did to Jon!
@DisturbedBeauty it was actually a woman. his babysitter
@DisturbedBeauty actually in one of his recent articles, he said it was his neighbor. I feel really bad for what Jon has gone through and I hope he passes it one day and feels better about what has happened.
you know lusyphur i bet korn is alot better than you!!! they prolly look better than your ass too. theyhave come along way and if someone fucked u up the ass i wouldnt feel sorry for you at all!!!
poor jon was molestered.. most people think it was from his dad but it wasnt.. it was like from a close family friend of neighbour or something like that and when he told his parents they didnt believe him.
kylie.
I think it was the neighbor's dog
2crudedudes...wtf?
nope actually it was a woman. yea when i heard i was like wtf? it couldnt be THAT BAD but you never know. his father and JD never mentioned the persons name but that it was a woman.
What I wonder is how they could carry on recording this song when it is obvious that Jonathan is in a lot of pain. I can't believe that no-one comforted him or at least stopped recording! Unless, the crying and ranting is just put on...who knows?
the ending, like the swearing, screaming and weeping is improve, like the ending to slipknots scissors
They probably hugged him but we didn't see it or hear it.
The fellow who produced it, Ross Robinson, forced Jonathan to relive the event mentally. The reason so many people hire Robinson as a producer is BECAUSE he is able to trigger such emotional responses out of artists.
It was not put on, nor was Robinson being a dick when he kept the recording. Jonathan expressed the emotion thanks to Robinson, and they kept it in the song because it is perfect. If anyone disapproved of it being included it would not be in and if it were (against their wishes) there would have been a lawsuit.
@Harry Manback I know I'm a bit late to this, but the whole band came over to hug him and comfort him. That's what is happening when all you hear is him crying.
@izzee0709 we're both a little late
First of all, this song is wicked! BUT I do not think it's fair to say that Jonathan's parents were ignorant, no one knows the full story so NO ONE has the right to say anything. Until Jonathan tells you the full story HIMSELF then don't go saying shit, it's not fair on his parents.
So he was raped by someone and his parents didn't do anything about it. He was a child because he said "It hurt as a child" so he was a kid. But then it said "f** your own child" That means at least somebody from his family member raped him. then it says "saw you watchin" That means his parents were there and they didn't care at all. That's also why he says ""Mommy why?".SO from what I gathered he was being raped by a family member why his parents were watching , or at least one of them. I don't know what kinda cruel parents will do that to a child , but i feel like jon just shot my heart :(
@Kornfan81 I feel the same way bud. this is a big thing that could happen to anyone and it is sooo cruel.
