Lyrics for Age Of Innocence as interpreted by Dead People

Age Of Innocence Lyrics
we dismiss
the backroads
and ride these streets
unafraid
resort to
scraping paint
from our bones
unashamed

no more the eye upon you
no more the simple man

desolation yes
hesitation no
desolation yes
hesitation no
as you might have guessed
all is never shown
desolation yes
hesitation no

and in my prayers
i dream alone
a silent speach
to deaf ear
if you want love
you must be love
but if bleed love
you will die loved

no more the lie upon you
cast in stone the autumn shade

desolation yes
hesitation no
desolation yes
hesitation no
as you might have sensed
we won't make it home
desolation yes
hesitation no

before the rites of spring
come to mean all things
a little taste of what may come
a mere glimpse of what has gone

cause for the moment we are free
we seek to bind our release
too young to die, too rich to care
too fucked to swear that i was there

desolation yes
hesitation no
desolation yes
hesitation no
as you might have guessed
we won't make it home
desolation yes
hesitation no

Is this the Smashing Pumpkins farewell song...do you think Billy knew it and decided to make this the "goodbye"???

After furth analyzation...I conclude that yes indeed this was Billy's feelings about himself, James Iha, D'arcy, and Jimmy Chamberlain.

"cause for the moment we are free
we seek to bind our release
too young to die, too rich to care
too fucked to swear that i was there"

they are free from the Pumpkins. They were too young to die to end it. They made a crap load of money from the Pumpkins, so they may not be sad or care too too much that it's over. And the ride was so unbelievable, Billy insists it was an illusion. I think those lines right there summarize Billy's final feelings on the Smashing Pumpkins.

I agree with everyone else. This is their goodbye. I think the title refers to their good times in the band also. They left that far behind.

this is my favourite pumpkins song....along with here is no why and stars falling. i love the lines "too young to die, too rich to care too fucked to swear that i was there". it just seems so desolate. i agree with what y2doggy said bout these lines.

the line "as you might have guessed, we won't make it home," well that is blatantley saying, as u might have guessed, this band is coming to an end.

i am rather hurt sometimes however when i hear the line "as you might have guessed, all is never shown" thats like saying, behind all this good music, u knew there were hard times and we weren't enjoying ourselves anymore, and i just find it troubling to beleive that billy and the rest of the band members just werent liking the pumpkins anymore :(

All good things have to come to an end. There were far more references to the end of the band in This Time... including the album art plate for the track which shows the band performing on a pillar above screaming fans. "As the curtain falls we bid you all goodnight." This song is, well i don't know, maybe an outlook on the future. one of the most haunting songs ever, especially in context of this concept album. Shiver-worthy. Also shiver-worthy is the last song of Machina II...

I was able to ask Melissa Auf der maur about whether or not she was featured on this song. Her answer was no. It was Billy Corgan on bass. Makes sense since he used to play guitar AND bass for the Marked.

I agree with the rest of you guys, this sounds like Billy talking about how the band has run its course.

I never took this to have anything to do with the band, I always thought this was the sequel to Perfect.

I thought personally that "This Time" was the more blatant "We're-finished" anthem..

Honestly,I'm glad the pumpkins broke up in a way.
I love the albums but the live shows were starting to kinda suck.I'm such a huge fan of the Pumpkins that I think there shows were getting kinda cheap.
I mean they released a greatest hits album.Thats what you would be getting plus the hits off the"new" one.Except Adore tour they played 80% off adore which I would prefer.KWIS

I really don't want to reply to the last commentor but I must...

I saw one of the last live shows they ever played and it was AMAZING. I have no idea by what standards you judge live shows, but I think you're opinion is way off.

The rest of your post is rambly and incoherent so i can't reply to that part.

yes, sadly the pumpkins broke up as said in this song, but Billy hadn't fully left, or jimmy or Iha, but they broke up. Billy blamed D'arcy, Billy and Jimmy made Zwan, but thier hearts weren't in it, Iha went solo then joined a perfect circle, jimmy and billy went solo, and now billy plans to rejoin SP and i dont think he'll have too much of a problem
(atleast i hope not)

Well I think that zeroTT hit the nail on the head, if you look at the lyrics for 'this time' It is obvious that it the goodbye anthem.

Best. Band. Ever. And along with Here Is No Why, Age of Innocence is one of their very best songs. The Smashing Pumpkins defined the term "Rock 'n Roll Glory."

Farewell song? Very probably, but it might not have been intentional.

I was always puzzled by the lines "a little taste of what may come, a mere glimpse of what has gone". Pumpkins will one day re-unite? And now it seems, they have.. think he planned it all along?

At the moment, this song is my end-of-secondary-school anthem. Which makes sense with the lyrics:

"a little taste of what may come
a mere glimpse of what has gone" - Now we're leaving secondary, which seemed to take forever and was really difficult, we're all going to college or getting jobs or whatever, and school was just a small hint at what will come
