So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
I feel so empty inside myself
a feeling so insecure
caught in the circle of addiction
a silent scream is piercing
you need to kill the pain
piercing through you vien
Sharing feelings that are not genuine
the false impression is fooling you my friend
I hope you haven't gone to deep
deep into the hole of drugs
Blood flows in poisoned veins
the veins it once flowed blood without a trance of sickness
now it's time to let the demon out of it's cage
let it breath freely for the final fime
and then crush.....yeah! crush it!
Chorus: Demon!(7 times)
demon in veins!
Screaming, screaming for loudness in the hightest divisions
you're loosing your mind as you suddenly go blind!
like an addiction it feeds your foolish need
I can't believe you're so goddamm blind
wake up! And smell my fucking kind!
Chorus: Demon!(7 times)
demon in veins!
You feel so empty inside yourself
a feeling you no longer feel
spinning between life and death
soon to become unreal!
Chorus: Demon!(7 times)
demon in veins!
a feeling so insecure
caught in the circle of addiction
a silent scream is piercing
you need to kill the pain
piercing through you vien
Sharing feelings that are not genuine
the false impression is fooling you my friend
I hope you haven't gone to deep
deep into the hole of drugs
Blood flows in poisoned veins
the veins it once flowed blood without a trance of sickness

I believe it's about a man or woman who, over the years, has surrendered his voice to both music; alcohol; and sexual conquest because it was less risky and offered instant gratification. Somewhere along the way s/he settled and found himself in a rut, all the while repeatedly convincing himself that he does what he does because he's free. And I believe he's far too intelligent and insightful to fully believe that his routine (the path well traveled with every rock cleared by his ever-present feet) is one of freedom. S/he trampled the flowers long ago, but fails to acknowledge it.
Ugh... a grammatical error with the word "both" used to reference three (not two). I omitted the issue of control and fear of being left behind if the other person in her/his life (metaphorically in his life) were to be somehow freed. A fear perhaps of moving on when the other is somehow stuck. But who knows. Only the bearer can be sure.
