    My Interpretation:To me, this song was more about a girl who is trying to resist the charms of a guy who is a bit of a womanizer - he can have any girl and he knows it. And the singer has seen the girls whose hearts he's broken and she doesn't want to end up like them, so she's resisting him.

    She's afraid that once he gets her to like him, he'll just throw her away, and she'll be just another silly girl.

    My Interpretation:its clear that its the singer that is the "unhealthy" one, NOT the person she is singing to. she feels her problems are so enormous and her life so hopeless that she doesnt want to bring down this person she has just met and has feelings for.

    yes, its true that Paul Thomas Anderson was inspired by Aimee Mann's songs to write "Magnolia". in fact, there is a scene where one of the characters (a drug addict who was sexually molested by her father) asks the cop she is falling for, played by John C. Reilly, the exact line: "Now that I've met you, would you object to never seeing each other again?"

    General Comment:I think it's about a girl who has a very pessimistic outlook on life and possibly a danger to herself. This boy wants to date her and take care of her, but she's like: "Look, I'm going to be too much hassle for you, it's better for you if you don't pursue this."

    General Comment:The singer is clearly aware that she is attracted to men who are very unhealthy. It's almost like she is saying, the more I like them - the more screwed up they are. Clearly, she feels intense desire and longing for this new man. This can only portend trouble and the healthy part of her is all too aware of this dysfunctional pattern. My favorite part is that she goes so far as to say that if she still falls in love with him she wants him to kill her. I once met a girl at a dance who I was attracted to and asked a friend if she was singlle. He said, stay away from her because she is crazy. I said, oh did you date her? He said, no - but I'm attracted to her. I think this sums up Deathlly perfectly. Thanks for sharing your comments.

    General Comment:I love this song.

    I agree that the song is about meeting someone who as you get to know him/her you realize that you could fall completely and uncontrollably in love with but you don't think that they'd feel the same intensity for you so you suggest never seeing each other again.

    I think she's saying that he sees that she has issues/unhealed wounds/problems and he wants to be her "savior" by solving them but when he's done, she'll be discarded because his work is done...

    General Comment:Those first few lines -- "Now that I've met you/would you object to/never seeing each other again/cause I can't afford to/climb aboard you" -- describe exactly how I felt sophmore year. I was meeting these new people, and I just felt so incredibly awkward and like it would be a big hassle that I didn't even want to talk to them again. Actually, one of those guys introduced me to Aimee Mann...

    General Comment:T. A. has said that Aimee Manns songs was what inspired him to do Magnolia and that the words " Now that I've met you
    would you object to
    never seeing each other again" was what he built the Claudia character on. I think this is a deeply depressed and scared/scarred person's feelings of the possibilty of a new relationship, no matter who the other is.

    General Comment:I guess she feels like she's falling for someone, or that she's going to lose control over a situation with this person, and she's asking him nicely to stay away. She realizes that he's going to charm her, and that it's a bad idea for her to get into this relationship.
