Look at the world in disbelief
You used to follow - now you lead
College has enlightened you
And you are proud to be different
And like different bands - different types
You ain't nobody's fool
It's like certain bands remind you of someone you hated
'Cause they didn't wear the right clothing
And there's only one true fashion
Alot of the bands on the college charts are great bands until they get signed.
Then you hate them It's such bullshit - you used to love them you hypocrite
I remember you and I listening to bands that we liked
Only the songs mattered to you
But now you're a D.J. and preaching that hype
"Corporate Rock Sucks"
"You know, college radio enlightens you"
It's supposed to serve as a means to expose new bands without prejudice,
but it makes no sense
Safe harbor for the underground
'Til the alternative becomes the popular sound
The bands are good 'til they make enough cash to eat food and get a pad
Then they're sold out and their music is cliché
Because talent's exclusive to bands without pay
Know it all - Did you really listen to that song?
Could you ever write what you call wrong?
You used to follow - now you lead
College has enlightened you
And you are proud to be different
And like different bands - different types
You ain't nobody's fool

Just bc a band can afford the equipment so their music doesn't sound like sh*t on their next album doesn't mean they are a "sell out". It means they were successful.
The lyrics are a riot! Great track.
if you choose to conform to something you're not to make yourself happy, you have to pick something to conform to, pick how you want people to see you. and these are the kids whose hypocrisy goes under the rug because people fear their disapproval.
it's analogous to the affirmative action laws because they use a discriminatory mentality and flip it in the other direction to try and solve the problem.
Heres to real music
Reading the lyrics now...
Do you think it is directed towards (a) college radio station(s)? or towards a friend who did go to college and left punk for the "indie" scene? or are both those just songwriting devices to get a point across?
About "selling out," I think a lot of the time it's true that the reason a band is now being played on the radio/musicTV is that their sound has changed consciously or unconsciously to become more popular/"easy to listen to." I stopped listening to any Jimmy Eat World including and after the Bleed American album, it just wasnt interesting. Same with Saves the Day, including and after the Nightengale album. There old stuff is still appealing, but their new music isn't. Does that mean I don't like the band? Or maybe it's just that my musical tastes have changed faster than their music has.
anyway, great song!
lagwagon are great.
An example of this includes The Offspring. They made four good albums then they started playing quirky pop rock shit.
In fact Lagwagon is another example. I liked them up intil Blaze, what a bunch of emo crap.
i don't think you can say that b/c they have made some $ they are now sold out. there is no A thus B relative operations going on here.
I agree that I hate when a band "sells out" insofar as they only get a say in the songs they produce...rather than getting people to sale the music the make...these things (unfortunately) are fundamnetally different once crapTV comes into the scene. But artists are going to adapt to fans...nobody goes into the music biz to play things nobody else wants to hear...they want the fame/fortune.
the problem is when corp execs are saying "i need more cow bell" cos that's what is selling right now. how great would punk, and alas all music be, if the artists had excessive sums of money to make the music they wanted to?!?
this song just says don't be as much of a mindless bog because a band becomes popular thus you don't like them as other people who only like them because other people do too. I think this is a "think for yourself" song & don't be a pawn of the corporate media...just in reverse (hating rather than loving).
Capitalism sucks and if you are playing only for the money maybe you should reconsider your job.
