Down the street you can hear her scream "you're a disgrace"
As she slams the door in his drunken face
And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries "Oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?"
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

And so castles made of sand fall in the sea, eventually

A little indian brave who before he was ten,
Played wargames in the woods with his indian friends
And he built up a dream that when he grew up
He would be a fearless warrior indian cheif
Many moons past and more the dream grew strong until
Tomorrow he would sing his first warsong and fight his first battle
But something went wrong, surprise attack killed him in his sleep that night

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually

There was a young girl, whos heart was a frown
'Cause she was crippled for life,
and she couldn't speak a sound
And she wished and prayed she could stop living,
So she decided to die
She drew her wheelchair to the edge of the shore
And to her legs she smiled "you won't hurt me no more"
But then a sight she'd never seen made her jump and say
"look a golden winged ship is passing my way"

And it really didn't have to stop, it just kept on going...

And so castles made of sand slips into the sea, eventually

General Comment:When listening to this song, it's important not to overthink its meaning. Simply put, a castle made of sand is a castle that's doomed to be washed away by the ocean tides. This is admittedly a broad metaphor, but it is a representation of something that is not meant to be. It can be an idea, a person, a thing, or a place. It does not matter. If something is meant to be, it happens. If something is not, then it does not. Sometimes, things that appear to be meant to be are things not meant to be, and vice versa. In the end, the things that are meant to be--such as the life of the crippled woman on the edge of the seashore who does not end up committing suicide--are meant to be, nothing more and nothing less.

My Interpretation:I think it talks about how everything comes into an end, even dreams, eventually.

    Pretty much yeah.

General Comment:I don't know how people interpret last lyric as a bad thing. No she did NOT commit suicide, battaglia01 explains it well.

She "jumped"(not off the bridge) and "said", but she was mute and couldn't walk... Notice two line prior to that she SMILED the words "you won't hurt me no more."

People change and things change no matter how bad or good things might be going. Accept it.

General Comment:The way i see it, "and so castles made of sand...melts into the sea eventually" represents our death. The castle eventually fades away, like each and every one of our deaths. The fact that Jimi says "evenutally' represents the element of fate or surprise. Each one of us is bound to pass away, all depends on how long that castle holds for.

General Comment:this is actually an autobiographical song. In the beggining he talks about a drunk man getting his front foor slammed in his face by his wife. Thats reffering to jimi's parents, his dad drank quite a bit. And when hes talking about playing wargames in the wods with his indian friends, hes reffering to his childhood when he use to go into his woods after school and pretend hes an indian. Finally, the woman in the wheel chair he talks about is his mother who was hospitalized for her drinking and when the kids visited she was in a wheel chair but left two weeks later.

    General Comment:read jimi's biography.

first verse is about his mother and father always fighting, drinking, breaking up and causing a scene to all the neighbours as was frequent in his childhood.

second verse is about jimi's own childhood, he used to run around the woods where he lived pretending he was an indian chief as was his heritage (his grandmother used to teach him about native americans and how his family was descended from them)

third verse is about his mothers death from a ruptured spleen, brought on by heavy drinking. he always considered his mum as an angel and how she was almost worn down by his father and by life itself etc.

castles made of sand, just a nod towards the timelessness of everything. good song made better by knowledge of the context it was written in.

General Comment:Build your castles out of stone, you won't be able to perfectly mold the walls, but they will be sturdier.

Sometimes, I don't know how Jimi understood disability so well. The ups and downs, the wanting to die, the epiphany of finding that's it's not all bad life. Crippled or not, we keep going. Maybe Jimi crippled his leg when he was parachuting, and maybe it made a special impact on how he knows...too much to say, too little time.

    Right on.

General Comment:battaglia01 on page 2 adds another dimension to the song, but I still disagree with the analysis of verse three.

Actually I think my verse three analysis fits better with his(?) theory about the song than his interpretation does?
