Well she's walking through the clouds
With a circus mind
That's running wild
Butterflies and zebras and moonbeams
And fairly tales

That's all she ever thinks about

Riding the wind

When I'm sad she comes to me
With a thousand smiles
She gives to me free

It's alright, she says
It's alright
Take anything you want from me
Anything

Fly on, little wing

General Comment:I believe it is about all the women (or perhaps just one) that come into your life that you love with all your heart and soul but for whatever reason you have to set free. Perhaps because you are a wanderer and they are not... Perhaps her dreams do not coincide with your own... or a myriad of reasons... So you set her free... She will go on her way without you, but she will always be a part of you. She is your Little Wing. Her memory alone lifts you. I have a girl in my life just like this. I love her with all my being, but i know we can't be together. And i want nothing but her to be happy.

General Comment:My opinion is that this song can be about a free-spirited woman that wants to share her love with more than one man (beautiful idea), about Jimi's guardian angel, about the memory of his mom, all that.

But more generally, I think it's about his imagination. His psychedelic imagination, that with its circus ming, running wild thru the clouds, and only thinking of butterflies and fairy tales, saves him, when he's sad, from the "unfreedom" and greyness of the world. Gives freedom to his spirit.

General Comment:Couldn't it be about the archetype of "the" woman?

I don't mean that "Monterey-as-girl" crap he told the people that interviewed him.

Just picture the lyrics as a metaphor for what we all wish for in a woman.

We will never get "it", 'cause that's what archetypes are: perfection, models, something to aspire to; but we will always have that concept in our minds. Just like the idea of perfection itself.

    Am I making any sense?

General Comment:it sounds like he's talking about his guitar ..and the different feelings he gets from it
"When Im sad, she comes to me
With a thousand smiles, she gives to me free"

and at the beginning where he says
    "Butterflies and zebras
    And moonbeams and fairy tales
Thats all she ever thinks about"

it shows the different journeys his guitar takes him on

and plus the music itself just gives off a "free" and "endless" vibe

General Comment:The lyrics shown are wrong , the line "With a circus mind that's running round" is actually "With a circus MIME that's running 'round", and the line "When I'm sad, she comes to me, With a thousand smiles, she gives to me free" is actually "when I'm sad, she LOOKS to me, with a thousand smiles she gives to me THREE". I wish there was some way to edit the lyrics that are up there, nobody's going to notice this post.

General Comment:When I hear this song, I always picture a little girl. An innocent little girl with big, bright eyes and a head filled with vivid and silly dreams.
