  Song Meaning:This song is about a rape, not a murder.
  Why would you ask a murder victim if shes okay? She'd be dead...
  
  The story it's telling is:
  
  A man broke into the girl named Annie's windown, raped her, and left her in a catatonic state.
  
  She dissociated and people have to remind her what happened.
  
  They keep pestering her to make sure she's okay, and she's not answering because she's too tramatized and they keep reminding her.
  
  The man may have tried to kill her since she needed resusitation, but she did survive.
  
  The Smooth Criminal is probably referring to a sociopath/psychopath because they are smooth and cunning and can be criminals.
  
  Its trying to sound like a happy song but really isn't.
  
  The crescendo it's referring to is that this was a big point in her life she won't forget and things won't be the same afterward, just like a crescendo in a song is a loud part that is most memorable and is a big part of the song.

  General Comment:The rape and or murder theory to this song applies quite well when you consider the different tones in the song going on, and really read the lyrics. Also I might add being hit by a "Smooth Criminal" could also apply to us listeners, after all it was originally a Michael Jackson song, which would have been a major pop music hit at the time. People would think of this song as a catchy feel good song, but really the lyrics are explaining a rape or murder....We've been tricked into thinking this is an upbeat happy song, when really it's a dark themed song.

  General Comment:To me, this song is about something far more basic to human experience than "Rape" and murder. Rather, it is about a girl who is seduced by a man who couldn't care less about her. To me, the crescendo is the seduction building its energy. Hence, her heart stopping (Annie are you ok, a la CPR) and everybody needs to leave her be (I want the area cleared.)

  General Comment:Well, I just heard this today for the first time. I honestly love it (what's with all you haterz? haha). It's got a good beat and some interesting/dark lyrics. My first impression was that it was about a rape or beating. If it was murder, they wouldn't be asking if Annie was okay. But then again, people don't generally break into someone's apartment just to beat them up. So I'm gonna say it's rape.
  
  And to me, the "crescendo" sounds more like a fight. It's the point where the action starts, where it builds in the story. They fought and she obviously didn't win. As for the "sign at the window", this would probably be signs of someone having broke in... Broken glass, etc. (And that makes sense to me cause the following line is, "That he struck you; a crescendo, Annie"... In other words, "we can see someone broke in, there's been a fight, Annie." And they want to know if she's okay.)
  
  Makes sense to me. But even if my interpretation is wrong, it's still a pretty awesome song. Love it :D

  General Comment:This song is great for its rhythm, and no matter how many times I read and re-read the lyrics I can't figure out what Jackson was talking about. Perhaps his violent upbringing. I hear his first sister really got it bad.

  Song Meaning:Okay guys I think the meaning of this song is about a man who breaks in to the girls house and beats her till her death. Thats the thing that first comes to mind when looking at the lyrics but if you go deeper it could be a story about a driftter who comes and rapes this annie girl. but i dont think that was the real aim. I think its just a murder story...
