It's late in the evening; she's wondering what clothes to wear.
She'll put on her make-up and brushes her long blonde hair.
And then she asks me, "Do I look all right?"
And I say, "Yes, you look wonderful tonight."

We go to a party and everyone turns to see
This beautiful lady that's walking around with me.
And then she asks me, "Do you feel all right?"
And I say, "Yes, I feel wonderful tonight."

I feel wonderful because I see
The love light in your eyes.

And the wonder of it all
Is that you just don't realize how much I love you.
It's time to go home now and I've got an aching head,
So I give her the car keys and she helps me to bed.

And then I tell her, as I turn out the light,
I say, "My darling, you were wonderful tonight.
Oh my darling, you were wonderful tonight."

General Comment:I don't get why people are saying that Eric Clapton "stole" Pattie Boyd from George Harrison when George Harrison stole Pattie from another man she was semi-engaged too.

And from what i've read, Eric and George had an amazing friendship that lasted until George's death. If someone steals your wife, you don't become friends with them and say "thanks for stealing my wife". They even referred to themselves as 'husbands-in-law'. Not really something you say if your enemies.

Besides, this song is an amazing one and one that can be put on replay and nobody would ever get bored of it. And if a woman doesn't appreciate this song, then she won't appreciate anything!

General Comment:Okay guys. Pattie Boyd wrote a book, and she describes the exact situation--
"One night, unusually, me and Eric were going out, and I couldn't decide what to wear. I was taking a very long time to do my makeup and hair, putting on one dress, then another and another, throwing them all into a pile on the floor. Poor Eric had been ready for hours and was waiting patiently. He was so sweet- at least, in the early days. The worst he would say if I annoyed him was 'you're a silly clown.'"

Then it goes on to say--
"Suddenly, as I was flinging dresses on and off, inspiration struck. When I finally got downstairs and asked the inevitable question, "Do I look alright?" he played what he'd written:

It's late in the evening; she's wondering what clothes to wear.
She puts on her makeup and brushes her long blonde hair.
And then she asks me, "Do I look alright?"
And I say "Yes, you look wonderful tonight."

General Comment:To all of you who are saying that Clapton wrote this song to make fun of his wife, you are so wrong.
It was written for Patti Boyd, whom Clapton stole from George Harrison.
You only have to listen to the words of it to realise it is written from the heart.
One of the best love songs ever. Layla was also written for Patti Boyd.

My Interpretation:Does anyone else get the feeling that this song is a bit of an apology to his girl? It gives me the impression of someone who has screwed up badly and is trying to get back in her good books. Also it seems a bit strange that that he says "Wonderful Tonight", as if she hasn't been in the past, or he hasn't felt that way in the past.

Dunno, to me it just seems that there is more to the song than just sycophantic love.
