He said that he would stay forever
forever wasn't very long
He said that he would take the high road
He thought that I was always wrong

Cause when he lied it meant he loved me
And when he lied it meant he cared
And when he lied it meant he loved me
Cause when he lied it meant that he was there

He said that he would go his own way
wrapped up my leg and down my spine
He said that he would be the fairest
Drenched in blood and turpentine

Cause when he lied it meant he loved me
And when he lied it meant he cared
And when he lied it meant he loved me
Cause when he lied it meant that he was there

I am never going back I don't care what he said
I wish he could see the hate in my head
I am never going back I don't care what he said
I wish he could see the hate in my head
I am never going back I don't care what he said
I wish he could see the hate in my head
I am never going back I don't care what he said
I wish he could see the hate

He said that he would tell no secrets
He said that he would never lie
He said that he would spring eternal
He said that we would never die

Cause when he lied it meant he loved me
And when he lied it meant he cared
And when he lied it meant he loved me
Cause when he cried it meant he cared

Cause when he lied it meant he loved me
And when he lied it meant he cared
And when he lied it meant he loved me
Cause when he lied it meant that
he was
he was
he was
He was there

My Interpretation:"I wish he could see the hate in my head".
Love this line. You don't have the skill to express your hate, not even word it enough to have an impact, so you just wish you could project your feelings as they are, make him cry.

General Comment:I can relate to this song because it's how I feel at the moment about an old relationship....

'Cause when he lied it meant he loved me
And when he lied it meant he cared
And when he lied it meant he loved me
Cause when he lied it meant that he was there'

I think the above isn't that at the time he lied at her, it's just that he said they would be together forever and they weren't....so that was the lie. But when he was saying that to her, he was there, he loved her and he cared.
I think it's one of those relationships you see yourself being in for a very long time but when it doesn't work out and it's the other person that ends it you want to make them sound the worse...by saying they lied when maybe they didn't. Maybe that is what he actually thought too.
    But things happen...MEN FREAK OUT!!
It's a perfect song of a perfect example...he was more keen than she was but not in a bad way...he said all the things that girls are made out to say.
But then he suddenly freaked out and couldn't cope.
    It explains the line....

'He said that he would go his own way
wrapped up my leg and down my spine'
'He said that he would be the fairest
    Drenched in blood and turpentine'

He didn't really want to let go of her, nor she him but because of how he'd been she could no longer let herself see him as perfect or the thing he was before....

'He said that he would be the fairest
    Drenched in blood and turpentine'

I also think that she loves him still but doesn't want to admit this because he hurt her and she might be seen as weak by people around her...

'I am never going back I don't care what he said
I wish he could see the hate in my head'

It's like she's lying like he 'did' saying she'd never go back whatever he said and that she hates him...when really it's not true...

It's like when you get so drunk that you cannot bare the hangover the next day, you always say 'I'll never drink again!'

The truth is with this song is when you love someone and they hurt you, you tell everyone you hate them...because your trying to show you don't care when you do.

You'll make them out to be the worst person in the world...even though you still think their most likely the best.

You'll change the things that meant everything to you into something nasty and evil...because you think it will hurt less.

But the truth is, she still loved him, she lied by saying she'd never go back to make the 'lies' equal. She wanted him to seem horrible because she couldn't cope that a nice guy would ever do this, that a nice guy wouldn't lie etc. Because she was trying to protect herself from the truth.

General Comment:In reply to what Cornflakez said...
Like everyone else this song i can relate to in every way possible...
'He said he'd go his own way
Wrapped up my leg and down my spine' - to me that means that he said he would go his own way but he still in some way controlled her...clung onto her and wouldnt let her go.. maybe in a kind of I dont want you but i dont want anyone else to have you kinda way? possibly reading a bit too much into it but for me and my own personal experience thats how i see it..
    And then..
'He said he would be the fairest
Drenched in blood and turpentine' - well fairest means pure...of pleasing appearance... so to be covered in blood and turpentine is not that... its basically all a contradiction between what he says and what he does and also is more to do with his lying thats also mentioned as well... well thats the way I see it... sorry...i went on a bit! Great song though!

What do you think that means? It's my favourite part of the whole song.

General Comment:the title is a reference to the velveteen rabbit, who believed he would be made real by loving someone and by being loved, and he was right.
