Suddenly our shortcomings don't seem to matter at much
Your IQ is 20 points low
And I'm no Six Foot Hot Look All American Man
Sad to say I pushed you away
Waiting for "Mrs. Right"
You never gave up
[Chorus]
Devotion
Waiting for me
You'll always be my girlfriend
I too am waiting for you
I'll always be your friend
I commend your stubbornness
Without it we'd never got this far
I am done with perfection
Chasing her leaves me with nothing but pain
Unlike you
She isn't true
She's got her own concerns
You never gave up
[Chorus: x2]
Your IQ is 20 points low
And I'm no Six Foot Hot Look All American Man
Sad to say I pushed you away
Waiting for "Mrs. Right"
You never gave up
[Chorus]
Devotion
Waiting for me
You'll always be my girlfriend
I too am waiting for you
I'll always be your friend
I commend your stubbornness
Without it we'd never got this far
I am done with perfection
Chasing her leaves me with nothing but pain
Unlike you
She isn't true
She's got her own concerns
You never gave up
[Chorus: x2]

Someone so perfect that she doesn't exist..she isn't true..
Therefore, she leaves you incapable of realising what you do have?
It's funny in the beginning when he is pointing out shortcomings.
Because if you actually read them...It's all really superficial traits to look for in a person! And as soon as he comes to realization that these "short-comings" never really f*cking mattered, he says.."Sad to say. I pushed you away. Waiting for Mrs. Right"
It's just the immediate transition in the lyrics right there. And then the following of his saying that this perfect dream girl was never real and she only bought him pain, so now he is done with chasing perfection. It honestly makes me think that this guy was so wrapped up in all these petty ideals for this dream girl that when he came to realise she was never real and everything about her was wrong for him, that he had lost the girl who was there. The girl who was devoted and selfless and who was there for him when he was being crushed by the fact he couldn't find this "Mrs. Right". She still stood by him devoted.
The girl realised it all along which is why she kept pushing for it. The guy was just too wrapped up in fantasy to see what he had. Which makes me think the girl in the song eventually walks away.
Because if you read the last chorus stanza it starts with "Devotion" instead. It's not like all the other ones that had always started with "You never gave up devotion".
She came to terms with the fact you can't make people realise what they truly have, when all they do is chase after what they don't have. When he finally did realise what he had, it was too late by then. He lost the real "Mrs. Right", when she was there in his face the whole time. Now she is devoted to someone else. Leaving the guy in the song as just a friend.
And it's sad to say..he pushed her away and lost her for good.
Jonas went for Laurel because she was pretty and she wanted to have sex with him. After Laurel was out of Jonas' life, Maria was by his side to help him while he was down.
Her devotion to Jonas was strong, and once Jonas realized this he fell madly in love with her. He wanted her, but didn't want her at the same time.
It's a wonderful song, I especially enjoy the harmonies going on in the chorus while they sing "Devoooootioon"
idk why, it just gets me every time!
yea this is defnitley about a girl who likes her friend and he doesn't realize that he feels the same way until he goes out with some other chick. he's also telling her that he'll always be her friend no matter what
*She ISN'T true
Beautiful song, though.
He also says that she'll always be his girlfriend, like she should know she means a lot to him even if they're not a romantic couple. I think the point of saying he'll be her "friend" is just to make it clear he just wants to be friends.
