Basically he's saying only the main character thinks only weak people show feelings. So this person here is bottling everything up. Someone asks the main character "what's the matter?" and she just responds with "what's the difference?"... basically over time it feels like people don't care, so we just keep stuff inside. We think that it makes us stronger, but it really doesn't.
However, as I say this, I do bury my heart in a hole most of the time.
This is a hopeless song, I agree with you, wolfperson1. But it's also very helpful in a strange way.

I agree with sirenlunaris. Although th esong is some what hopeless because things aren't being resolved, it also teaches us what not to do (espeically for things as important as emotions). We often learn what to do by seeing example of what we shouldn't do.
