Put a candle in the window
'Cause I feel I've gotta move.
Though I'm goin', goin'
I'll be comin' home soon
Long as I can see the light.

Pack my bag and let's get moving
'Cause I'm bound to drift awhile.
Though I'm gone, gone
You don't have to worry
Long as I can see the light.

Guess I've got that old travelin' bone
'Cause this feeling won't leave alone.
But I won't, won't
Be losin' my way
Long as I can see the light.

Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Oh yeah

Put a candle in the window
'Cause I feel I've gotta move
Though I'm goin', goin'
I'll be comin' home soon
Long as I can see the light
Long as I can see the light
Long as I can see the light
Long as I can see the light
Long as I can see the light.

General Comment:I think the guys is telling that he'll be leaving for sometime, but put a light on the window for it will be his guide(as of lighthouse for the fishermans that go off the shore), and he will not be losing his way with it. He could still come back home.

He hate to leave but he really have to.

General Comment:I always thought this song might be about someone who has to go somewhere (like because of the draft or something) but doesn't want to leave the person that they love so he tells her to put a candle in the window and he promises he'll find his way back home.

General Comment:Yeah, I totally agree with Frankenstrat 5150. Everything you said was perfect. And your name suggests that I wouldn't kick your ass. Van Halen rules.

General Comment:I think its actually about Slaves in the south on the underground railroad going north, sign for a place thy could stop and rest was a candle in the front window of a house,I think is from the point of view of a slave who is on the run, hence the "as long as I can see the light "

General Comment:i think literally this song is about a guy who has to go away, maybe because he's lost sense of himself, but he wants to let his girl know he'll be back if she'll have him. so he says he'll be coming back, as long as he can see the light of that candle in the window that means she's still there for him.

this song is about having to go somewhere, to do something that you may or may not be afraid to do, and knowing that when you're done with that, someone will still be there for you.
i helped a girl i used to be really close with move away from her home recently, and she's not gonna have things go easy for her anymore, not always gonna be safe in the near future. i told her that if she ever feels totally lost, doesn't know what to do, i'll always be there to fall back on. i'll always have a candle in my window for her.
that's what this song has always meant to me, which is so weird, because it was playing on the radio when i said goodbye to her.

General Comment:I thought this song was about somebody going off to war (Vietnam?), and wanting his wife/girlfriend to wait for him at home.

    I love this song.

General Comment:i'm about to travel across the country for something that will change my life, and i made this huge decision because of all the love i've known. thats the light man, it makes picking up and moving thousands of miles away ok. never ignore that feeling that tells you to get up and go, it's really telling you that its time to grow. thats exactly how i feel right now with one month to go- this soulful tune captures it all !

General Comment:Gotta love the way he drags out some of the words at the end of a line(Window, move, etc.). Very unique song, and a beautiful song.
