Lyrics for Miller's Angels as interpreted by 3ssence

Miller's Angels Lyrics
Miller's angels in black and white
Welcome everyone in
Children dreaming of wrong and right
Wrapped in grace and in sin
They come out of the blue sky
They come out of the blue
They come out of the blue sky
But you never know where they're gonna go
Hey romeo
Miller's fingers are traveling down the length of her thigh
But Miller's mind is still wandering
Staring up at the sky
They come out of the blue sky
They come out of the blue
They come out of the blue sky
But you never know where they're gonna go
Hey romeo
Don't, don't come around here
Miller's angels are hovering in between the earth and the sun
In the shadow of god's unwavering love
I am a fortunate son
They come out of the blue sky
They come out of the blue
They come out of the blue sky
But you never know where they're gonna go
Hey romeo

There's a real innocence to this song for some reason. And although I have no idea what the song is about, I think that it's probably about corruption and a loose of yourself throught life; like as you go through it, thing just come flying at you and you very early realize how little control you really have. Anyway, it's justa really beautiful song

ok, i think this is about when people die, and fate. Its the idea that angels just pick people when it is there turn to die. And it says how they come "out of the blue", and it shows how they can just watch and flirt with the people on the earth, yet theres nothing we can do about it. I think its mostly to do with fate.

There is more to this song than what has been posted. At the end he says:

Can't you hear me
cause I'm screaming
I did not go outside yesterday
Don't wake me
please don't wake me
cause I was dreaming
and I might just stay inside again today
I don't go out much these days
yes sometimes I stay inside all day
Won't you leave me alone

This is the best part of the whole song! But it's so sad.

The bulk of the song - the first verses and everything - were written for the film Miller's Crossing, directed by Sean Penn (hence the dedication "for Sean and me" in the album notes). But Duritz added the coda after the song was rejected by the movie producers. So, the bit "Can't you hear me?" is a personal complaint, very typical of Duritz at this period in his career, saying simply "I hate being famous, I can't go outside, I'm a nervous wreck, leave me alone!". So, the first 2/3 of the song relate to the movie, and the final bit is Duritz.

Thank you Tito, I was going to say that exact same thing, the last part is the nest. Whoever posted this needs to listen harder. Anyway... this song is easily one of CC's best, I absolutely love it. Beautiful

'Miller's angels in black and white
Welcome everyone in
Children dreaming of wrong and right'

do you not notice a similarity with the lyrics in round here:

'Step out the front door like a ghost,
into the fog, where no-one notices the contrast of white on white.
And inbetweeen the moon and you
the angels get a better view
of the crumbling difference between wrong and right'

I heard that the song was about fear of death, pretty much exactly as sambo28 said. But what carvenmonket said sounds convincing.

Part of what Tito4687 posted is in the VH1 version of "Mr. Jones" too.

So sad. Maybe it's about being overwhelmed ("Can't you hear me, cause I'm screaming") by trying to choose between wrong and right and to figure out which is which ("Children dreaming of wrong and right / Wrapped in grace and in sin / They come out of the blue sky / ... But you never know where they're gonna go") and just wanting it to go away ("I did not go outside yesterday / Don't wake me, please don't wake me / 'cause I was dreaming / and I might just stay inside again today").

this song...its so beautiful, in so many ways, and it can be used to so many situations, but the one that sticks in my mind is, well, he loves someone, but he's wandering on something, i would have to say that, he is fortunate for what he has, he feels depressed, and his angels are his sins, his grace, his black and white, his love and sorrow. they come out of no where, out of the blue skies, to perhaps save him, but he does not know where they'll exactly go, if they'll help him or not, and he's simply a lost romantic trying to find his someone.

as for the last bit of lyrics not noted above, it sounds to me that everything he described before was in a dream he was having, he liked the dream, but was awoken, and now seeing he's depressed even more, he wants to be left alone, lol this is just one that seems to stick out in my mind, but this song has so many different meanings and interpretations

he is sick, and cant even go outside anymore. he is screaming in fear, or screaming at god. he had been having a wonderful, happy dream, where he was a child, or a lover, all he cared was that in the dream he was going. didnt know where, didnt care where, as long as it was out, or away
and then he woke up and realized it wasnt real,
and now just wants to be alone and go back to sleep to find his angels

Ya, so Miller's Crossing is a film by the Coen brothers and has nothing to do with Sean Penn. It's about Irish gangsters, so I don't think this song would work, but correct me if I'm wrong here.

Adam Duritz explains "Miller's Angels" :

If I have a problem it’s that I think too much. The real meaning of this song is: what if there are angels, and what if they’re not benevolent. What if they’re, sort of, ambivalent. What if they, just sort of, hang there between you and God, and sometimes *block* the light of the sun from getting to you...block the light of God. What if that’s what they do. Every once in a while, they just go....*PLUCK*....and they pull you off, just when it’s time, ‘cause it’s their job. What if it’s that hard of a world. And, what if you’re some guy who can’t stop thinking about it. I wrote it because my friend, Sean Penn, wanted us to write the closing theme for the crossing guard, and he brought the film in the middle of ‘94, this summer, to New York and showed it to Dan and I. That movie is about a guy who had an event happen in his life that changes everything in all these peoples lives...forever after that. That song is my....it’s not about the movie, but I took some of the feelings of that movie, and when Dan and I wrote the song, that’s what I was feeling. It’s like, what if it’s that kind of world? What if it just is? What if...because I think the problem the guy has in the movie is that he just can’t stop thinking about it. His whole life has been shattered by what happened, and it’s just never going to be put back together again....or, maybe it will some day, but it hasn’t happened yet. And, if I have a problem it’s that I think about things too much. Or, I think about things as much as I do. There’s no changing it, but I was thinking just what if you can’t stop thinking about these things hanging over your head.
