Blue morning Blue morning
Wrapped in strands of fist and bone
Curiosity, Kitten, doesn't have to mean you're on your own
Your can look outside your window
He doesn't have to know
We can talk awhile, baby
We can take it nice and slow

All your life is such a shame
All your love is just a dream

Are you happy where you're sleeping?
Does he keep you safe and warm?
Does he tell you when you're sorry?
Does he tell you when you're wrong?
I've been watching you for hours
It's been years since we were born
We were perfect when we started
I've been wondering where we've gone

All your life is such a shame
All your love is just a dream

I dreamt I saw you walking up a hillside in the snow
Casting shadows on the winter sky as you stood there counting crows
One for sorrow
Two for joy
Three for girls and four for boys
Five for silver
Six for gold and
Seven for a secret never to be told

There's a bird that nests inside you
Sleeping underneath your skin
When you open up your wings to speak
I wish you'd let me in

All your life is such a shame
All your love is just a dream
Open up your eyes
You can see the flames
of your wasted life
You should be ashamed

You don't want to waste your life

I walk along these hillsides in the summer 'neath the sunshine
I am feathered by the moonlight falling down on me

General Comment:One of my all time favorite songs since the mid 90's!

I hear it as a guy begging his ex or a dear friend to leave a loveless marriage. She wants to get out but is to fearful to start over.

I don't necessarily see it as an abusive realationship, but more of a pointless and meaningless life.

General Comment:Take me back to september 1994 the first time I heard this song... my life changed forever that month, the album title grabbed me. August and everything after, I met her in the spring 1994, blonde hair and blue eyes cutest little thing I ever saw, I was married and so was she, both of us unhappy her in a controlling abusive relationship, me captivated by her. By memorial day we were together everyday, intimate and spending every minute we had falling deeper in love and making plans for a future together. We spent our summer days together, nights home with the others miserable and wanting to be together. By August she came to me and told me she was pregnant a little scared but happy, I was also scared but wanted her more than anything else... September she left me and went back to her husband, told me there was a small chance it could be his and she wanted to stay with him,

Well, I dreamt I saw you walking up a hillside in the snow
Casting shadows on the winter sky as you stood there counting crows

One for sorrow.... All the sorrow now in my life
Two for joy..... All the joy we had together
Three for girls and four for boys...... Our baby together

    Change, change, change

Well thats what the song means to me, not sure if its close to the original intention Adam meant but 17 years have passed and the song still haunts me today I've never seen her again and still think about her and the child

General Comment:This is my favourite Counting Crows song, from the first time that I heard it on a cassette in my car when I was 16! It is about an abusive relationship and a friend who wants her to 'change'.
    Always loved this song!

General Comment:Songs can relate to people in so many different ways.....I too believe this song is about a one sided relationship. Has anyone considered it may be about religion?? My two cents....

General Comment:Not sure what it's about. Trying to reach someone, I guess. I like the following lines: "There's a bird that nests inside you/Sleeping underneath your skin/When you open up your wings to speak/I wish you'd let me in."

General Comment:I can't say for sure exactly what the motivation was for writing this song although it was obviously written to a girl. For me, though it always reminds me of my dad...so much of the lyrics has meaning to me. My dad ended his life almost 2 years ago and by the end of his life he seemed to have lost his battle with depression and alcohol abuse...to me the song is about watching some1 u love desperately trying to change their lives and bein helpless & wishin they'd let u in. A murder of one... very literal.

General Comment:The song is about life not turning out the way you want it to.

That said, when I hear it, I hear a song about someone who cares deeply about someone else who is already in a relationship, and is likely happy enough there.
But he knows that he could make her so much happier, even if she refuses to try.
He wants to show her that maybe he screwed up in the past, but understands what he lost, and knows he can do it again, and do it right.
He see's the beauty in her, and wants to show her, even if she doesn't want to see it.

The chorus makes it sound like he's upset with her for wastign her life with this new love, but that's also what makes it so pure. He genuinly feels he's right.

"Does he tell you when you're sorry, does he tell you when you're wrong."
I see that line as implying honesty. Maybe what was once an in joke telling her she's sorry means he understand he screwed up, telling her she's wrong means he wants her to know he understand, but disagrees.

Some of the other lines are straight forward in this regard, others seem more abstract, like they're there stricktly to show he sees the beauty in her as a person, like the part about counting crows. It's poetic and beutiful, like her.

That first line that implies being willing to cheat, in this sense, has nothign to do with that. He wants to show he cares. "That's why they can talk a while and take it slow."
To show her that she cares, without her having to sacrifice anything.
