Do you see the face on the TV screen
Coming at you every Sunday
See that face on the billboard
That man is me

On the cover of the magazine
There's no question why I'm smiling
You buy a piece of paradise
You buy a piece of me

I'll get you everything you wanted
I'll get you everything you need
Don't need to believe in hereafter
Just believe in me

Cause Jesus he knows me
And he knows I'm right
I've been talking to Jesus all my life
Oh yes he knows me
And he knows I'm right
And he's been telling me
Everything is alright

I believe in the family
With my ever loving wife beside me
But she don't know about my girlfriend
Or the man I met last night

Do you believe in God
Cause that's what I'm selling
And if you wanna go to heaven
I'll see you right

You won't even have to leave your house
Or get out of your chair
You don't even have to touch that dial
Cause I'm everywhere

Cause Jesus he knows me
And he knows I'm right
I've been talking to Jesus all my life
Oh yes he knows me
And he knows I'm right
And he's been telling me
Everything is alright

Won't find me practicing what I'm preaching
Won't find me making no sacrifice
But I can get you a pocketful of miracles
If you promise to be good, try to be nice
God will take good care of you
Just do as I say, don't do as I do

I'm counting my blessings,
I've found true happiness
Cause I'm getting richer, day by day
You can find me in the phone book,
Just call my toll free number
You can do it anyway you want
Just do it right away

There'll be no doubt in your mind
You'll believe everything I'm saying
If wanna get closer to him
Get on your knees and start paying

Cause Jesus he knows me
And he knows I'm right
I've been talking to Jesus all my life
Oh yes he knows me
And he knows I'm right
And he's been telling me
Everything is alright

General Comment:"Do as I say, don't do as I do."

That line pretty much sums up preachers in general if you ask me, whether they're televangelists or your everyday pastor, seeing as how asking people for money is generally looked down upon if you're not a "spiritual leader".

General Comment:I think Christians are taking this song way too seriously. Phil´s goofing on TV-evengelists, at least the one´s under investigation at the time of the release of this song. I´m raised Christian, have no affiliation today, have a make-shift belief in some diety that I can´t even explain to myself. I´m in no way knocking any religion. Take this for what it is, a goof on the Jim Bakker´s out there. You just gotta have a sense of humor or life will kill you!

General Comment:As previously stated it is simply a piss-take at the expense of televangelists. As Phil said before performing it, on a Sunday in the USA no matter where you turn that dial, there they are. Some of them are decent honest types and do what they say they are going to do with the money. Others, however... Collins then slipped into character: And I believe the Lord told me to get eighteen million dollars by the weekend!

Interestingly ex-Marillion frontman Fish had recently done a song about televangelism called Big Wedge.

Song Meaning:This song has nothing to do with atheism. This song came out around the time when there was scandals going on within some Christian churches here in the USA. While there was scandals going on in some churches, mainly in the televangelist tv programs, it certainly does not represent other Christian churches.
When it comes down to it, we really can only know the truth about this song from the person who created it :)

General Comment:I saw an interview with Phil Collins where he said he wasn't trying to offend religious people but that he was simply taking on the phonies like Benny Hinn and Jim Bakker.

General Comment:This song is a double-meaning. From one point of view, it's an uplifting song about faith in Christ. In another sense, it's a smart-arse way of making fun of Christianity. Every line seems to fit both versions too. Freaking brilliant!

You see the face on the TV screen
    coming at you every Sunday
see that face on the billboard
    that man is me
(Jesus is everywhere, but he's also turned into a lame icon of culture.)

On the cover of the magazine
there's no question why I'm smiling
you buy a piece of paradise
you buy a piece of me
(sarcastic comment about his position as infinite king of the universe lol)

I'll get you everything you wanted
I'll get you everything you need
don't need to believe in hereafter
    just believe in me

    Cos Jesus he knows me
    and he knows I'm right
I've been talking to Jesus all my life
    oh yes he knows me
    and he knows I'm right
    and he's been telling me
    everything is alright
(It's funny to say he knows you, because there are so many people in the world. Plus, Jesus doesn't talk to you. You can't really have a relationship with someone you can't communicate with, and that works both ways.)

    I believe in the family
with my ever loving wife beside me
but she don't know about my girlfriend
or the man I met last night
    (another Jesus relationship joke)

    Do you believe in God
    cos that's what I'm selling
and if you wanna get to heaven
    I'll see you right
(how could anybody know how to get someone to heaven? Obvious sarcasm.)

You won't even have to leave your house
    or get outta your chair
you don't even have to touch that dial
    cos I'm everywhere
(also seems kind of silly. I am basically explaining the sarcastic humor behind it, not my opinion.)

Won't find me practicing what I'm preaching
won't find me making no sacrifice
but I can get you a pocketful of miracles
if you promise to be good, try to be nice
God will take good care of you
just do as I say, don't do as I do
    (That is REALLY sarcastic!)

    I'm counting my blessings,
    I've found true happiness
cos I'm getting richer, day by day
(meaning money makes him happy... sarcasm)

you can find me in the phone book,
just call my toll free number
you can do it anyway you want
    just do it right away
(making fun of the nature of prayer)

There'll be no doubt in your mind
    you'll believe everything I'm saying
if you wanna get closer to him
get on your knees and start praying
    (same... dissing prayer)

This is a song making fun of Christianity by saying affirming things that are actually part of the faith, yet when you think of it a certain way they sound ridiculous. If you want more of Phil Collins doing this, listen to / read my posts about the Invisible Touch album. I like to call it beautiful blasphemy. The whole album is hardcore dissing God / religion.

    Have a good day! :)
