Every time I look at you, I go blind
Every time I look at you, I go blind
Every time I look at you, I go blind
Every time I look at you, I go blind

In the mornin' I get up
And I try to feel alive, but I can't
Every time I look at you, I go blind
I don't know what it is
Something in me just won't give me a chance

I think it's that I feel
More confused by the deal
Love has shown me

Little child, did you know that there's a light
And it's gonna shine right through your eyes
What do you think that life is like?
Every time I look at you, I go blind
I go blind

Well, somewhere over there
There's a purpose, there's a care for free
In me, there's no body
No one plan, no one stand to be free

I think it's that because
I have seen all the fuss
And it's no big deal
No big deal

Hold me, hold me 'cause I wanna get higher and higher
Every time I look at you, I go blind
Higher than
Hold me, hold me 'cause I wanna get higher and higher
Every time I look at you, I go blind
Higher than

Hold me, hold me 'cause I wanna get higher and higher
Every time I look at you, I go blind
Higher than
Hold me, hold me 'cause I wanna get higher and higher
Every time I look at you, I go blind
Higher than life

Mr. Felber (Dean, the other guitarist)found this on 54-40 album back in '86. they recorded it as a B-side on Cracked rear view, but then it was on the 'Friends' soundtrack, on it took on a life of its own. It's Dean's vocal debut.

Also, I was at their performance at Jubilee Cityfest, and Mr. Rucker (Darius, the lead singer)said that this song is about a guy who hates this girl so much that everytime he sees her, he wishes he couldn't.

I have to say.. this is the weakest link to Cracked Rear View. I love Hootie and I've seen them twice, don't get me wrong. I do like the part where they sing, "Hold me, hold me, cause I wanna get higher and higher..."

Jacqualine, I like the way you copied that nearly word-for-word out of the Scattered, Smothered and Covered booklet. The "life of its own" part caught my eye.

I feel that this song is about a single parent who hates him/her self for failure at romantic love - but sees blinding love in the result - a beautiful child.

for some reason i think this song is about a drug addict staring at himself in the mirror thinking how his life is shit......and everyone has been telling him that........

My roommate said she thinks this song is about an ugly person (she was kidding...I think). But is most likely blinded by love. I love the line "I think it's that because I have seen all the fuss And it's no big deal. No big deal."

    So good.

    My Interpretation

Could be about a child, could be about an addict (I can see myself in there sadly), or maybe just about love. That early love when your unsure; like when you can't decide about your girlfriend/boyfriend and that feeling drives you about mad. Or blind, because of the indecision or the uncertainty. "Something in me just won't give me a chance," that line could go with how the person can't get their chance to show their true love. Hold me hold cause I wanna get higher is a beg to that girl or guy to reach out to you and love you so you can too.

Reminds me of my last love. Thinking about that makes me realize the song could be about coming out of love with all the pain and trying to win that love, your woman back.

Funny, now after writing this I've got the urge to go get my love back. Go Hootie.

I kind of always thought it was about masturbation...he is a non-confident guy who doesn't have the nerve to be with a girl so instead he looks at her picture and does the deed.

It amazes me that no one thinks this song could be about going blind every time they see children suffering in countires that are oppressed. I think that they are saying that they turn a blind eye everytime they see commericals or news reports about these children. It's easier to just pretend it doesn't exist than do something about it. "Little child, did you know that there's a light, And it's gonna shine right through your eyes. What do you think that life is like? Every time I look at you, I go blind." I think this represents how these children are so oppressed they don't know there's life outside of just trying to survive, that there's a free world ("somewhere over there theres a purpose there's a care for free, in me there's nobody, no one plans, no one stand to be free") and no one is doing anything about it. I don't think this is limited to opprssed children but also the genereal distruction we are doing to the earth and how there is a lack of care.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
