All I can say is that my life is pretty plain,
I like watchin' the puddles gather rain
And all I can do is just pour some tea for two
And speak my point of view but it's not sane
It's not sane
I just want someone to say to me, oh,
I'll always be there when you wake, yeah
Ya know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today
So stay with me and I'll have it made
And I don't understand why sleep all day
And I start to complain that there's no rain
And all I can do is read a book to stay awake,
And it rips my life away but it's a great escape
Escape, escape, escape

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain,
Ya don't like my point of view,
Ya think that I'm insane
It's not sane, it's not sane

I just want someone to say to me, oh, oh, oh
I'll always be there when you wake, yeah
Ya know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today
I really wanna really gonna have it made
Oh oh oh

General Comment:Are we certain all the lyrics are correct? I always thought it was "all I can do is read a book to stay awake, and ENRICH my life away"
I've always thought it was the most clever line in the song, I'll be very disappointed if that's not what it really says.

Memory:This song is definitely both about depression and loneliness. For as long as I can remember, this song has been one of my favorite songs. I was three when it was released and I always loved the video and I have probably listened to it thousands and thousands of times. At the time I obviously wasn't able to comprehend the heaviness of the song, but as I grew older I became more aware of the meaning and how the lyrics are both simple and very complex. So few people appreciate songs like this that even though may be catchy, they still have a solid lyrical meaning. Music today is such crap. Lyrics mean nothing anymore, they are just words strung together for the sake of making money and being commercial.

General Comment:This song does have sad lyrics, but what makes it great is the video! In the end, the little girl in the bumble bee costume finds a whole field of other "bees" to dance with and she's not alone anymore. This is my all time favorite song and always cheers me up when I'm feeling blue, not brings me down!

General Comment:I love finding out what you heard was a mondegreen. I always thought 'ya know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today' was 'ya know I'd like to keep my teenage tragedy'

Song Meaning:im not sure if it has been mentioned but this song was actually written by christopher thorn the rhythm guitarist, not by shannon in fact it was written before they even knew eachother chris wrote it about his ex girlfriend that was a debbie downer that never wanted to go out and do stuff and she was always happy when it rained because she would use it as an excuse to sit at home and read books all day

My Interpretation:I feel this song is about lonliness and seeking acceptance. The first stanza mentions 'I like watching the puddles gather rain' suggests that he has nobody to spend his time with so with this extra free time he enjoys the little things such as watching rain. "pour some tea for two" is followed directly by by referring to himself as insane. This could mean that he is almost schizophrenic as in pouring tea for an extra non existant person then tells that person his opinions, for nobody else will listen. The beginning of the chorus is pretty basic, his desire for companionship and end his lonliness/sadness. The second part of the chorus explains how he doesnt understand why he sleeps all day, which entails how he is unaware of some of his actions. it then alludes to the rain in the first verse, because he enjoys watching the rain, and complains when theres no rain. The second verse gets interesting, he starts referring to a "you" as in "you dont like my point of view". This suggests that as opposed to just lack of companionship, some of this lonliness is connected with loss of love. Earlier in the song it refers to a great escape. These could connect, as in he is escaping from his sadness from his loss. These observations aren't definite, they are merely spectulations. I base these upon the lyrics and the official music video. This is still my favorite song and blind melon rocks.

If you feel I'm inaccurate in my interpretation, please tell me your opinion.

General Comment:the writer has picked a specific scenario...he talks about an innocent soul...he ws carefree in the early years of his life where he finds happiness in simple events...("i like watchin' the puddles gather rain")

then he must move on wit the society where his innocent point of view is rejected...(example an artist in the corporate world....("and speak my point of view but it's not sane, its not sane")

next stage he tries to find comfort in ppl...ppl he loves...he tries to find answers for the questions only solved by himself...but he doesnt knw....
(i just want someone to say to me I'll always be there when you wake)

then he tries different things to escape from the current dissatisfaction...alcohol..drugs may be...
(it rips my life away but its a great escape...escape...escape)

it is certain that this song is nt about the general life...it s very specific and speaks about a great tragedy...superbly written...the sad meaning is hidden under the joyful melody which reminds me we all fake smiles to hide our true feeling.....thumbs up for blind melon...:D

Song Meaning:I heard this song in my head this morning. I lost my beloved friend, and baby, my 10 year old cat Hefner that I had adopted when he was a kitten. I lost him to cancer over the weekend about 5 days ago. He died in my arms as I cried so hard and told him we would meet again when the time is right and he has a new body, we will recognize each other. I have always believed and read alot on reincarnation of pets. I truly believe our furbabies come back to us because the bond is so strong. The words of this song are the cat singing the first lyrics (life is pretty plain, watching puddles gather rain) and the cat owner singing the second lyrics about reincarnation of pet (speak my point of view but it's not sane). I heard the song in my head and looked up this site and it makes sense to em in this way. Hefner died on a rainy day. And now the song clues me in that I will find him again on a rainy day...

General Comment: I have the album Nico by this band. I listened to it, and it was kind of slowed down in tempo. It made it sound wrong. Ripped away.
