Come to my house tonight
We can be together in the nuclear sky
And we will dance in the poison rain
And we can stay a while in Heaven today
Let's stay together
Let's stay, these days are ours
Let's die together?
Two hearts under the skyscrapers
There's a time bomb in the high rise
There's a blue suburban dream
Will I see you up in paradise
Or have you come to catch me?
Come to my arms tonight
Just you and me together under electric light
And she will dance in the poison air
And we can stay together
Two hearts under the skyscrapers
There's a time bomb in the high rise
There's a blue suburban dream
Will I see you up in Paradise
Or have you come to catch me?
Come to my arms I'm lost
Just you and me together in the year of the horse
Single file in the nuclear night
And we could feel a little closer
As we tumble through the sky
Let's stay together, let's stay these days are ours
Let's stay together
Two hearts under a skyscraper
Let's stay together, let's stay in this broken down love
Let's stay together, two hearts under the skyscrapers

Song Meaning:I think there's a lot of evidence of this song being about the dissolution of Soviet Union, and the uncertain fate of the satellite nations after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

"We can be together in the nuclear sky
And we will dance in the poison rain"

Imagery related both to the nuclear arms race, and also the Chernobyl disaster which was not too far in the past at the time. Nuclear radiation and poison rain were serious realities in those nations.

"Let's stay together" might refer to all of the countries in general, that are much weaker as independent nations than they would have been as one united entity.

The skyscraper/motorway imagery might refer to the urbanization of these countries in the Soviet years, and the knowledge that there was more to come.

"Just you and me together in the year of the horse
Single file in the nuclear night"

The year of the horse was 1991, immediately after the fall of the Berlin Wall. And "single file in the nuclear night" could mean that each country, one after another, must address the situation of the collective future.

"Let's stay together in broken down love."

Once you get on the idea of the USSR satellite country thing, it's hard to get rid of it.

Song Meaning:Totally agree w/ the suicidal aspect of the song. My take:

A pair of lovers have made a pact to kill themselves together. The vocalist tells his lover to meet at his place (a highrise building). Upon arrival, he wonders if his lover will back out ('or have you come to catch me?'). They dance in the rain on the rooftop, preparing to jump off together.

General Comment:Has anyone ever found out what Brett is singing in the full version, at the point when it goes in to a musical interlude and the vocals are really muffled?

I've only ever been able to make out the odd line or two, and it is something like:

I don’t need to do that thing here...
...Not tonight, not going to see the band...
..Not tonight I'm gonna be sick...
    ...I’m gonna spew
Don't take me down to the park with the cars
    Don't take me there
    Take me somewhere else

Sounds a bit freaky. I also have a live version of this track and it sounds like Brett sings something completely different, only Wikipedia mentions '16 tears' which is in this live version and is apparently a lyric from the original version (though you can’t hear those words at any point in the song). Here's what I can make out - the brackets denote uncertainty over the lyric, the ? is where I have no idea:

See our lives in the shadow of a gun
Trippy little girl where the pigs don't come
    16 tears for every year
Hooked up together with the [burning year]
Here lies the shadow of a gun
Standing in the sky like ...?..
[Tina had the floor] and the child in my bed
.....?..........?........... and the lice in the bed
.....?..........?........... to the tune of a scream
Looked out his window he saw the gas fire on
He saw a fat cow in a single bed
Ripping up a storm like ..?.. for the dead
See our lives in the shadow of a gun
Trippy little girl where the pigs don't come
    16 tears for every year
Hooked up together with the [burning year]
Here lies the shadow of a gun
Hanging in the sky like a [heart] from the sun
Smashed and grab with the concrete dream
of a ..?.. ...?....... to the tune of a scream
Fat cow ...?... through the trees
Half way down the city on his hands and knees
See our lives in the shadow of a gun
Trippy little girl where the pigs don't come
    16 tears for every year
Hooked up together with the [burning year]

General Comment:I think there's definitely the suggestion of a drug using couple. Although the lyric "Just you and me together in the year of the horse" could be referring to the Chinese calendar I'd bet that it's a not-very-well disguised reference to heroin, 'horse' being slang for the drug.

General Comment:i'm not quite sure what this song is about, well i have 2 different interpretations: one, it could be about the all-consuming nature of young love, where it's either passion or tragedy. and the other, about being stuck in a relationship that's going nowhere and neither person has the courage to change its course so it's much easier to think about things in fatalistic terms than face up to the reality. hm. one of my favourite songs regardless. i still remember the day this came out on single...valentine's day 1994. so appropriate, this band is one of the greatest things to come out of britpop.

General Comment:i think it's about love in a decaying place.
considering how obsessed Brett Anderson is/was with London, he certainly didn't think much of it.

General Comment:its about 2 lovers who have something good together despite the alien nature of the city they are in. the song has a suicide pact element 'And we could feel a little closer as we tumble through the sky' and also 'Will I see you up in paradise or have you come to catch me?' suggesting that they commit suicide together and go to paradise away from the landscape they are in and hence when they hit the ground 'two hearts under a skyscraper' after they have jumped and gone to heaven together.

General Comment:i think it's about a drug using couple who overdose on drugs to die - 'stay together' because things they cant control are dragging them apart.

I think it's even more touching than radiohead's ode to a suicide pact 'exit music (for a film)'

    General Comment:Correct lyrics...:

    Come to my house tonight
We can be together in the nuclear sky
And we will dance in the poison rain
And we can stay a while in heaven today

    Let's stay together
Let's stay, these days are ours
    Stay together
    Two hearts under the skyscrapers

    Come to my arms tonight
Just you and me together under electric light
She will dance in the poisoned air
Just you and me forever by the motorway there

    Let's stay together
Let's stay, these days are ours
    Stay together
    Two hearts under the skyscrapers

There's a time bomb in the high rise
    There's a blue suburban dream
Will I see you up in paradise
Or have you come to catch me?

Come to my arms I'm lost
Just you and me together in the year of the horse
Single file in the nuclear night
And we could feel a little closer
As we tumble through the sky

    Stay together
    Stay, these days are ours
    Stay together
    Two hearts under a skyscraper
Stay together, let's stay in this broken down love
Stay together, two hearts under the skyscrapers

(Stay together... Stay, these days are ours...)
