Lyrics for Shout as interpreted by numb

Shout Lyrics
Shout, shout, let it all out
These are the things I can do without
Come on, I'm talking to you, come on

In violent times
You shouldn't have to sell your soul
In black and white
They really, really ought to know
Those one track minds
That took you for a working boy
Kiss them goodbye
You shouldn't have to jump for joy

Shout, shout, let it all out
These are the things I can do without
Come on, I'm talking to you, come on

They gave you life
And in return you gave them hell
As cold as ice
I hope we live to tell the tale
I hope we live to tell the tale

Shout, shout, let it all out
These are the things I can do without
Come on, I'm talking to you, come on

Shout, shout, let it all out
These are the things I can do without
Come on, I'm talking to you, come on

Shout, shout, let it all out
These are the things I can do without
Come on, I'm talking to you, come on

And when you've taken down your guard
If I could change your mind
I'd really love to break your heart
I'd really love to break your heart

Shout, shout, let it all out
These are the things I can do without
Come on, I'm talking to you, come on

Shout, shout, let it all out
These are the things I can do without
Come on, I'm talking to you, come on

It's just about everything that bugs them. They wrote the song during an experimental "primal scream" session with their therapist.

P.S. it's a stupid song by a band of wussies.

one of my favorite songs ever. i've listened to this song since i was a little girl. and i think it is awesome that disturbed re-did it. disturbed is one of my favorite bands. and draiman said the singer was happy with the re-make and was glad the song had the edge and heavyness that it was meant to have.

to villi, thanks for telling me that disturbed re-did it, i honestly didn't know that. Well as for what the lyrics think, i really think it's talking about a child facing problems with his parents in time of war. My reasoning on this is:
In Violent times you shouldn't have to sell your soul,

Those one track minds that took you for a working boy

they gave you life and in return you gave them hell, oh i hope we live to tell the tale. Maybe it's not the case at all, but in any way it's a cool song. Powerful, and strong.

I think that shorty415 has gotten closer to the true meaning of the song than anyone. I also think that it is about the dalemas between youth and their parents. Except I dont think it is about war time. I think it's about how some teen agers treat their parent like crap! "In vilent times" I think is about the screaming matches that bull-headed teenagers have with parents. That is why the song is called shout. I think the song is a mirror of much of society today. I dont think that many children these days are bering reared to respect their parents or any kind of athority figure for that matter. What happend to "Yes Mamm, No Mamm" Or "Sir"? Saddly I think is a reflection on the parrents who do not know how to rais their kidds and spend more time tring to be their friend and appeasing them instead of tring to be their parrent and rais them right. All the affect of selfish people wanting too many divorces and I include myself.

it was written in a counselling session non? curt smith was apparently a right disruptive child. so i guess it is about child hood, about not making your elders take complete control of you, cos hey kids can think too, sorta thing, there's loadsa childs in the video, so i sorta think thats what its about.

i heard on vh1 that this song has something to do with the soviet union more or less aiming missiles at england and finland sometime in the 1980's. doesnt make much sense, though

Actually I think MadShanghai is mostly right - this song is about a primal scream therapy encounter. Basically, during primal scream therapy, one lets go of every impluse and emotion with every thought. If you feel angry about something, frustrated, then you act it out instead of just talking about it. The idea is that if we let go of our repressed emotions which civilization places upon us (a Freudian idea that is also adapted by many other psychological trains of thought) then we can move on from these childish fears and wants that are holding us back and realize our true adult selves. This song talks about letting go of our childhood problems in shouts of anger, letting it all out.

Like most fad therapies, most experts think this is another bunk idea. Tears for Fears talked a lot about repression and subconscious desires in their songs, even on "Call Me Mellow" on their new album. Since a lot of people think this is just wussie-hippie-in-touch-with-feelings stuff, they think Tears For Fears are a bunch of wussies too. I also believe that most counterculture ideals are well-intentioned but often wrong about many things, and Tears for Fears kind of represents the psychological aspect of the counterculture. Well, actually their music is pretty good despite the fact that their lyrics are annoying sometimes, and if you just take the lyrics for their camp value in the parts that annoy you then it's not so bad anyway.

Essentially about primal scream therapy or indeed m ost forms of psychotherapy. You are often encouraged to beat a cushion or similar while shouting out to release anger at yuor parents/siblings etc - hence 'Shout, Shout, Let it all out'

i could have sworn the song was about Orzabal's and Smith's distaste for the fact that the us was keeping nuclear weapon on british soil, i mean, it is 1985, dead in the height of the Cold War.

"I'n violent times
You shouldn't have to sell your soul.
In black and white,
They really, really ought to know

"They gave you life,
And in return you gave them hell,
As cold as ice
I hope we live to tell the tale."

"And when you've taken down your guard,
If I could change your mind,
I'd really like to break your heart."
i f#@king luv this song to no end, and just because it sounds cool, but because it has a cool meaning. *goes to play keyboard lines from song*

First song I ever heard from Tears For Fears. At the time I didn't the band was Tears For Fears, but I'd go around singing it and then one day, I was listening to a cover they did and came across this song. I was very happy to see, and hear, it again.
