Welcome to your life
There's no turning back
Even while we sleep
We will find you
Acting on your best behaviour
Turn your back on mother nature
Everybody wants to rule the world
It's my own design
It's my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help me make the most
Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world
There's a room where the light won't find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do I'll be right behind you
So glad we've almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world
I can't stand this indecision
Married with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to rule the world
Say that you'll never, never, never, never need it
One headline why believe it?
Everybody wants to rule the world
All for freedom and for pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world
There's no turning back
Even while we sleep
We will find you
Acting on your best behaviour
Turn your back on mother nature
Everybody wants to rule the world
It's my own design
It's my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help me make the most
Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world
There's a room where the light won't find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do I'll be right behind you
So glad we've almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world
I can't stand this indecision
Married with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to rule the world
Say that you'll never, never, never, never need it
One headline why believe it?
Everybody wants to rule the world
All for freedom and for pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

Honestly, I don't think this song is about anything really. Maybe it's another Tears for Fears song about primal scream therapy again. I don't think there is enough substance in the song to be an anti-capitalism song. Most of all I'd like to know what the following lines mean:
"There's a room where the light won't find you Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down When they do I'll be right behind you."
Any takers on this question?
I can't say for sure but this is what I got out of it.<br /> There's a room where the light won't find you,<br /> is the darkness of life; All the sorrow, pain, or loss in our lives.<br /> For example we all want power to some degree or to get ahead<br /> and when we get it eventually it fades (15 minutes of fame if you will).<br /> Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down<br /> When they do I'll be right behind you."<br /> This is when anything goes wrong in our lives the only thing that matters<br /> is us, the people who care (our family, friends, etc...).<br /> In the end all the money, power, etc... will be gone but we will still remain.<br />
FearsEnd - excellent comments & your interpretation makes sense. I had a slightly different view ...but I too can't say for sure.<br /> <br /> There's a room where the light won't find you..."light" could be the knowledge that nothing lasts forever, that life is really about freedom and pleasure. "The room where light can't find you" then would be...being a ruler of the world, perhaps someone who is in tight control (ie a dictator) of their world ....they are in their own dark world.....their own "room". Perhaps they fear the light...or being out of control.<br /> <br /> When the walls of the room come tumbling down...light shines in. Holding hands is an act of showing support... too not be afraid of letting go of "being in charge of the world"...that an individual does not have to control everything around them if they have someone to hold hands with, to share life & that Light with.<br /> <br /> Don't know. But, full disclosure, I guess I like the thought that, with someone you care about, many things become less important, like "control" etc.
I feel pretty confident that this line has to do with dying and the loss of ego. "I'll be right behind you" means that he knows exactly with you're going through.
