NOT a guilty pleasure........... But what can I say? This song is great... Like the Pet Shop Boys. I don't know what this song is about, but nevertheless it is a great song.

For me this is a glorious send up of all things consumerist, again Tennants lyrics are top notch, showing that writing for Smash Hits paid off nicely... u can't get more 80's than this, tho the production beats the pants off Stock, Aitken and Waterman anyday!! PSB's are the best (and most underatted) pop act of the 80's apart from the Police.

Two releases of this and I'm not sure which I like best. The first, almost quietly spoken in a sinister way, the second, shouting from the rooftops. In the first video, Neil looked suspiciously Jewish, with a colourful 'production' line theme for the second. An 'opportunist' is an Arfur Daley or Delboy type - one who takes advantage of another's "talent" (the talent of being a mug) for money.

While there may be some satirical intent in some of the tone and wording, the song seems to be mainly a straightforward proposal of business partnership. In a theme particularly common to the 1980s, however, the singer doesn't hesitate to mix business with pleasure and money with love.

The potential partner is evidently a beautiful and strong-minded woman ("you've got the looks" and "you've got the brawn") and the singer boasts about his intellectual and financial prowess to her. (He's a graduate from a very prestigious college, he can work a computer, etc.) He wants her to be his "partner in crime" for some kind of get-rich-quick scheme ("If you've got the inclination, I have got the crime"), but this may also be a marriage proposal. The satirical element lies in the possibility that this is a love song; if so, it's about the very unique kind of love that might exist between two ruthless corporate people seeking financial success together.

Very symbolic of 80s get-rich-quick wealth and greed, written and sung with the perfect sneer.

The video with the decomposing Neil has always been one of my favorites. The "coda" to the song in that video is pretty disturbing too... clearly showing how fleeting wealth can be.
