Lyrics for Steal My Kisses as interpreted by moochie

Steal My Kisses Lyrics
I pulled into Nashville, Tennessee
But you wouldn't even come around to see me
And since your headin up to Carolina
You know I gonna be right there behind you

'Cause I always have to steal my kisses from you
Always have to steal my kisses from you
Always have to steal my kisses from you
I always have to steal my kisses from you

Now I love to feel that warm southern rain
Just to hear it fall is the sweetest sounding things
And to see it fall on your simple country dress
It's like heaven to me I must confess

'Cause I always have to steal my kisses from you
Always have to steal my kisses from you
Always have to steal my kisses from you
I always have to steal my kisses from you

Now I've been hangin around you for days
but when I'm lean in
You just turn your head away
Ohh I know you didn't mean that
She said 'I love the way you think
but I hate the way you act'

'Cause I always have to steal my kisses from you
Always have to steal my kisses from you
Always have to steal my kisses from you
I always have to steal my kisses from you

Always have to steal my kisses from you
I always have to steal my kisses from you

Did you guys know that Ben wrote this song about his son? I didn' think so cause it doesn't make sense in some of the song, but he said so in a interview. isn't that cute??

it's about his son? I could see how it could be...except for that thing about the dress. Maybe he's just using alternative parenting methods...

at any rate, it is a sweet song. it just makes me feel so summery.

I suppose "dress" could be taken in a different sense, as in "clothing" and not a girl's dress. I'll still think of it being about a girl, when I listen to the song. I once knew a girl that kind of acted like that around me. Never turned me away or told me she didn't want me. But also never went through any trouble to see me or be with me, never asked me to do anything. I think its a beautiful song. Sad, but OK -- not depressed. And that's how life is sometimes.

Not to start an argument because i can see where you're coming from about this being about his son. But to quote the song
Ohh I know you didn't mean that
She said 'I love the way you think
but I hate the way you act'

but the rest of it kinda supports the song being about his son, or seperated child, maybe a daughter lost in a divorce that moved to carolina. Anyway i have no idea if Ben Harper even has a daughter so please don't flame on me for this, i'm just goin by what i hear in the song.

*PS this reminds me alot of Aerosmith's Dont want to miss a thing, i think its abut his daughter but ::shrugs::

if he hadnt mentioned his son in an interview, i would never have given this a parental perspective.

I think its about a couple, or ex-couple. I once sat on the lap of a boyfriend and he just about died from shock saying 'wow, i cant believe I'm getting a hug before midnight'

Maybe its about always having to make the move?

I could have sworn Eagle-Eye Cherry sung this song. When I downloaded it, thats what the file said, and they sound EXACTLY alike.

good arguement starter but in my opinion this part isn't referring to his son...if it is about his son. what if that part is referring to his sons mother. now i don't know anything about ben's relationships or social life, nor do i care, but if indeed she left him, since thats the feeling i got from it, (many other scenario's are possible aswell) he now has to steal his kisses from his son since its harder for him to see him or something along those lines...maybe, i don't know. the thought just occured to me so i figured i'd mention it

I could see it being about his son. I think that makes it cute. But I think we can all agree its about the narrator having to put in the effort, because the other person isn't protesting (obviously they get 'kissed') but not persuing back. I think it's a fun song, the narrator has no problem chasing the other person, or stealing kisses.

I love this song mostly because I'm a huge Ben Harper fan and it's one of his more upbeat songs, so a nice change of pace, but I don't see it being about his son. It's clearly referring to a girl, and you could argue daughter, but I think it's clear that it is more of a lover:

but when I'm lean in
You just turn your head away

Anyway, I think it's about a guy who is in love with someone and is desperately trying to do the right things for the girl, but just isn't.

I totally get this!
Even before I read here today that Ben wrote it about his son, I've always sung it to my own little boy. For me the song is spot on because my boy is 2 now, and such a little man. I get the odd kiss when I can but they grow up so fast, I know before long he'll probably resist any affection. "...but when I lean in you just turn your head away..."

For his son, whatever...
It's about this girl that he has always been in love with, maybe from childhood and she likes him too, but gives him a hard time, like she teases him or maybe she is shy. She wouldn't come to Nashville to see him, but he's going to Carolina to see her chasing her. She told him no, but she told him was heading up to Carolina. It's a tease, he knows this and likes this about her, so he has steal kisses from her when he can. Sneak them in, like pecks on the cheek or forehead. He likes it though, I think it's what makes him crazy for her. This song is a happy song, it should remind everyone of when they first started having crushes or falling in love when it was innocent.

That story about the son seems like a good excuse, because sometimes you do have to steal kisses from the little ones. But I don't think that having to steal kisses from him would turn to lyrics about a simple country dress, and the southern rain, and her saying I love the way you think but I hate the way you act! It's a really endearing song though. He wrote it; and if he says that's it's about his son then okay.
