Still falling
Breathless and on again
Inside today
Beside me today
Around broken in two
Till you eyes shed
Into dust

Like two strangers
Turning into dust
Till my hand shook with the way I fear

I could possibly be fading
Or have something more to gain
I could feel myself growing colder
I could feel myself under your fate
Under your fate

It was you breathless and tall
I could feel my eyes turning into dust
And two strangers turning into dust
Turning into dust

Song Meaning:Nearly every mazzy star song is about hope sandovals heroin addiction. The lyrics are and always have been interpreted as love songs but the fact of the matter is that this, and most of mazzy stars songs, are about heroin.

General Comment:This is a song about a person who has left their loved one, whether it be through death or otherwise. Usually it's the other way around, usually it's the one who has been left that is put into song. Turning into dust means they're starting to 'forget' about each other, they're setting aside the memories, they're starting to move on to different things-different people. They're becoming strangers, they're turning into dust.

General Comment:I am so glad I didn't hear this song somewhere else first. I think of the music and nothing else, it's refreshing. Every time I hear House or Foxfire I want to put a gun in my mouth. TV and movies are great for bringing good music to light but I think it ruins the song to some degree.

Anyways, I think this song is about two people shedding skin together as the years go by. In a relationship individuality can by lost and as time goes on you become more like the other person.

I also think it could be about heroin. Sounds like the person she is singing about could be H. No real reason why I feel this way could be the tone of the song.

My Interpretation:The 9/11 theory is interesting. It's not what its about because this song was realeased long before 9/11, but thats what it makes me think of, a New Yorker watching the towers fall on the roof of his apartment building.

    "Still falling"
The buildings are still falling, and/or the people jumping out of the windows, they are still falling one by one to their death.
    "Breathless and on, again"
The newyorker and all of America is breathless, watching this tragedy happen.
    "Inside today, beside me today"
The whole nation stood together, everybody was crying, strangers hugged strangers.
    "Around, broken in two"
2 is a reoccurring number in the song. The two twin towers are broken. Our hearts are broken in two, as we watch the tragedy.
    "Til your eyes shed"
This defiantly means crying, balling your eyes out.
    "Into dust"
The towers fall, until there is nothing left but dust.
"Like two strangers, turning into dust"
Again the number 2, two towers, once standing tall, are now strangers to eachother, turning into dust as they collapse.
"Till my hands shook with the way i fear"
The newyorker is so afraid, he's shaking.
    "I could possibly be fading"
He's so distraught over this he's fading, sadness overcomes him.
"I could feel myself growing colder"
He wonders how someone could do something so terrible, wonders why the world has so much evil, he loses faith in it.
    "Under the fate"
He's under this tragedy, like a victim under the rubble, destroyed by it.
"It was you, breathless and tall"
The WTC was one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world at the time.
"I could feel my eyes turning into dust"
The dust kicked up from the collapsed buildings gets into his eyes.
"And two strangers turning into dust"
Once again the number 2, the towers are now strangers, falling into dust.
    "Turning into dust"
Dust flooded the streets of New York city for over 24 hours after the attack.

Lyric Correction:Actually, elessar007 - the lyrics on the Mazzy Star site are not entirely correct. Mazzy Star doesn't publish song lyrics, so it's really up to the discerning ear of the listener to figure them out. On that note, this is what I hear (based on the studio track and live recordings of the song):

    "INTO DUST"

    Still, falling
    Breathless and on again
    Inside today
    Beside me today

    Around broken in two
    ‘til your eyes shed
    Into dust

    Like two strangers
    Turning into dust
‘til my hand shook with the weight of fear

    I could possibly be fading
Or have something more to gain

I could feel myself growing colder
I could feel myself under your feet
    Under your feet

It was you, breathless and torn
I could feel my eyes turning into dust
And two strangers turning into dust
    Turning into dust

Based on this, I think the song is about a relationship that is dying, crumbling, disintegrating.

Lyric Correction:I'm not saying anyone is crazy or that everyone is bespelled. Instead, I will simply say that the lyrics found at Mazzy Star Boulevard (mazzystar.nu) say ..."Under your fate" If you go to Hope's official site - hopesandoval.com, they will direct you to Mazzy Star Boulevard for the lyrics to songs.

Personally, I would go with the lyrics that have a connection to the artist's official website rather than the lyrics derived from what my, or any other listener's ear is telling them. The lyrics might not make sense but that's besides the point since we are talking about music as an artistic medium and not a recipe for baking cookies. My theory, when in doubt go to the artist or an agent thereof to find out the lyrics instead of relying on third parties.

What is meant by the lyrics?? Well that is a whole other can of worms. I'm just addressing what the lyrics are, not what they mean.

General Comment:I signed up for an account with this website specifically to put this out there, because everybody on the internet seems to be missing something that is totally obvious to me. Either I'm crazy, or there is a spell over everybody. OK, maybe I'm crazy. But isn't this obvious????

    "Under your FEET"

The song is called "Into Dust", for heaven's sake. This seems straightforward... still just as profound and heartbreakingly beautiful as this wierd, ethereal "Under your fate" lyric that everybody seems to be on about. But if you listen, and keep in mind that she generally sings with a bit of an American drawl... presto. Problem solved.

Oh, and the "And two strangers" at the end also should be "Into Strangers". I just think that the discussion of a song that is so amazing and so *literally* "down to earth" should also be down to earth... Not to discount anybody's flowery interpretations, but I honestly hope this suggestion manages to do that.

We all die. I love you all.

    General Comment:Ya I know...!

Years later we are listening to possible sound tracks to add to a video game commercial ... and we find this PERFECT song to add. (It worked fabulous with the battleground background.) A seeming hopeless and desperate life and death situation that two log-lost warrior spirits find themselves trapped by.

The song is actually about two humans, whose relationship is being twisted and tortured by others so adamantly, that their desire to share their hope for each other seems ... well ... kind of hopeless.

(But it only seems that way - for IF they hang in there - they can both survive.)

All they have to do is keep the faith - and keep trusting each other - and they will come off conqueror ... and find each other alive ... when others can no longer resist their re-connection in this life and the next.

General Comment:This song is about death, at least to me. It kinda describes that feeling of separation between you in this reality and that of the other world, the underworld, the heavens, or whathaveyou. There's no religious background to it, nothing about the bible, the koran, etc.

The song gives this floating feeling between your last breaths. In those last moments before death, who is by this persons' death bed, who is here now, who has made in it he's/her long journey. Only him/her, the struggling sides that have always conflicted beneath between making choices of taking this road or that one.

Here there person's side, surrender, or lay in rest finally fading away. Growing colder..
He could feel under the fate of death, inevitable to us all. We must always fall under it's fate because there's no other way around it. It will take us the moment it arrives.

Maybe, the last line could refer to a lover of some sort. "It was you breathless and tall", I could feel my eyes turning into dust. So this great over bearing moment of fate, only resembles that other time when fate led her/him to meet the lover of his/her life.

Song Meaning:I kind of think it is about getting high. I know no one else has mentioned this so people may be shocked that I don't agree with their romantic ideas for the song, but hear me out. The way that she is describing the world around falling into dust. And being under someone's fate. I think she is talking about someone who maybe influenced her to start using. She was falling into dust, her hands were shaking from the drugs, and she was losing control over her own life. Falling under some strangers fate. I could be totally wrong but it's an opinion.
