I wanna hold the hand inside you
I wanna take the breath that's true
I look to you and I see nothing
I look to you to see the truth

You live your life, you go in shadow
You'll come upon and you'll go black
Some kind of night into your darkness
Close your eyes with what's not there

Fade into you
Strange you never knew
Fade into you
I think it's strange you never knew

The strange light comes on slowly
A stranger's heart is out of home
You put your hands into your head
And your smiles cover your heart

Song Meaning:Like a previous poster has already stated, the song is about a heroin overdose. This isnt my opinion or interpretation, it is factual. Hope Sandoval has said so herself and can be verified. People can make up their little love stories all they want but it is just ignorance. Every time "you" is said in the song it is the overdosee speaking or referring to themself. But keep playing it at your weddings and dedicating it to your lovers as rock n roll heaven is probably laughing their ass off every time someone does. Stay gold pony boy...

General Comment:I always believed this song to be about being in love with an addict. How she looses herself in him, as one does with an addict. And how she loves so much but so rarely "sees" the true him when he is using (you come upon and you'll go black). I thought the lyrics "strange you never knew" were referring to how which addicts are using they are all consumed and can't see anything but themselves and their needs. As if he was blind to her love because of it. The last verses are about when he begins to get clean (the strange light comes on slowly), he begins to see and feel again. And his eyes are opened to all the love she has given.

General Comment:y'all leave this fucking song alone unless you're capable of even remotely understanding it's significance and worth. If you are a souless douche bag who thinks lust is synonomous with love and that conquering young kids is some major feat, than take your patheic diseased body and find another song. You don't deserve this one. Leave it the FUCK ALONE!

General Comment:No one should sully this song by misinterpreting it. It's one of the most beautiful songs ever sung. It's not a song for couples that are together a night, a few nights or a few months. It's not about lust. It's not about being together to temporarily end loneliness. It is about something so much deeper. It is about love. Someone I once knew enjoyed this song last fall and I about gagged. It is a sacred song, not to be confused with Sex on Fire or Body is A Wonderland and other such simplistic, shallow frivioloties. Mazzy Starr sang from the heart, not from her loins. Don't sully it!

General Comment:I heard this song years ago and thought it was hauntingly beautiful and that was it. I heard this song today and it brought me to my knees. I do not intend to interpret what the writers meant I am just going to share my experience.
I just ended a 1 1/2 year relationship with a man who I now suspect had a personality disorder - psychopath/sociopath (not violent but lacking empathy toward anyone, incapable of loving anyone but themselves, selfish addiction for self-gratification through sex and drugs, years and multitudes of extra-marital affairs ending in divorce - yet bearing no responsibility, countless jobs and losses, etc).
I was determined to reach him; I thought with enough love and kindness I could meet his true soul and possibly “help” him. I began to lose myself and dissolve into the vacuum of his dark insatiable appetite and ego. I struggled and went along with the illusion of a relationship, but it became clear his soul was not available for anyone. I think I realized this after observing him with his family and teenage children, his inability to truly love me and let me in, was nothing personal. He is just void of giving and this applied to everyone in his life. It is just how he was made. It was a painful lesson for me.
So for me, the song now has a therapeutic value to it. xo

General Comment:One of the most wonderful couples songs ever written/sung...just so incredibly special. It's love, sex, desire, friendship, caring, bonding, etc, all rolled into one. Not many songs, especially modern day songs, that can evoke such sensuality. Love love love this song...

Song Meaning:Mazzy Star, a female fronted alternative slow core band, achieved their greatest success in 1994 with the single ``Fade Into You.'' The song, with lyrics by vocalist Hope Sandoval and music by guitarist David Roback, peaked on the Billboard Modern Rock charts at number three. ``Fade Into You'' was also a Top 50 single in both the United States and the U.K. The video was prominently featured on MTV, and the song has been featured in movies such as Angus, Nicholas Cage's 2005 Lord of War, Guy Ritchie's Swept Away, and countless television shows such as Alias, Desperate Housewives, Roswell, Without a Trace, Cold Case, Gilmore Girls and CSI Miami.

The song has different meanings to different people. For most, it's a reminder of an era of alternative music that defined a generation post Seattle-grunge. Memories of teenage make out sessions, slow dances, and romantic courting. Some people take the lyrics as words coming from a shy wallflower type that is finally confessing their feelings to the object of his or her affection.

The lyrics are most widely interpreted as a bittersweet story of falling in love with someone that is slightly damaged and incapable of living up to expectations. Hope Sandoval hauntingly sings of trying to connect with her partner on both an emotional and physical level; until, she begins to realize that this person can't give back. They aren't quite positioned where they need to be in life. You can hear the disappointment and heartbreak in the way she sings her lyrics.
She has in many ways given herself to whomever she sings to. They have become everything to her and she's lost herself in the process. She's faded into him and has discovered that she's slightly damaged as a result.

The verse ``I think it's strange you never knew'' seems to suggest that this person hasn't even noticed Hope's heartache or her true feelings because their soul is damaged, their world may be dark, and they're self-centered and lacking a certain depth. It's as if this person fails to realize that the couple aren't the same two people they once were. He never noticed that she's morphed into something to appease him rather than something true to herself. (musicbanter.com)

Memory:I saw the Hope Sandoval girl at a Hope concert one time in 2001. Sooooooooo pretty right? Well the 1 thing I remember...you know she never smiles never talks between songs, but sometimes shed finish a song, turn to her drummer and say....... ""COMB ANOTHER JUJUBE"". Dont know what COMB was about, but every time the drummer went up to Hope, had a Jujube at the end of his thumb, slid thumb UNDER THE EDGE OF HOPES JAW, UNDER THE SKIN OF HOPES CHEEK so you couldnt see it. Pulled his thumb out, there was Hope chewing Jujube with a little smile, she started singing again.

""COMB ANOTHER JUJUBE"", thumb thru face, 5 or 6 times I swear. Than Hopes drummer said he had 1 Jujube left, slid thumb under Hopes face but this time only half way, he made a face and pulled out. There was Hope....big squishey lump half way down her cheek, IN her skin not udner it. She blushes hard then RUNS off stage, drummer runs after her with twezers?

In papers next day: MAZZY STAR SINGER WALKS OFF STAGE, thats it. I ask my friend who was 5 rows back, she says nothing happen that day, nothing with Jujubes I mean. But I was in the 1st row, I know Hopes secret and maybe Im the only one :X
