There was some controversy about it when it was released in Germany, I think- people saying it was about rape and it was promoting harassment of women, etc. Lame. This is my fave Rammstein song, I think there's a desperation in the lyrics- yes its about lust and stuff, but there's an undertone of love. I have a tendency to look too deeply into their lyrics

A lot of people I know stopped listening to Rammstein after finding out what some of their lyrics meant...I think that's ignorant. Rammstein is awesome, Till Lindermann's voice is godly, and they have some of the best and heaviest guitar riffs ever. Anyway, their stuff isn't anything worse than Manson, or Cannibal Corpse, and people shouldn't take it so seriously.

I really do think this song is about rape/stalking, but I don't understand why that would mean it encourages it...I mean, if it is about that, then it's likening the rapist/harasser to an animal. I almost want to laugh when poeple think that the speaker of a poem is always supposed to be the lyricist or the "good guy."

I know this was a long time ago...but I'd like to comment on xx_acid_starz's thingy.
Obviously you don't undertand the meaning of the word ignorant. The root of the word is IGNORE, the people who were actively reading the lyrics and making moral decisions accordingly were not being ignorant. Also, comparing them to another band doesn't make them better. You might as well say that killing 20 people is acceptable because it's not as bad as killing 30 people.
I'm not dogging Rammstein. I have to admit that I really like their music, no matter how much I disagree with some of their ideas. They make German sound wonderful.

According to me this song is about stalking and a rape. the singer is stalkin a person i finds beatiful and the reasons and desire aka the sandbanks are a lot and gives a reason to hunt down and fuck his pray. The bridge is his anger wich is burnig(his anger is building up) brakes at the end wich means that he doesnt stand it anymore and rape´s his victim. It may be a bad explenation but i cant explain unless you think think the same way i do

AnnaAkasha: maybe the song has been inspired by the novel. They have a similar story. Although there are vampires, the "smell" theme is the same, and it's not a simple or common subject, so there must be a connection between the song and the book. (both are on my list of favourites :)

The meaning's almost entirely tied up in the first verse (amazing this conversation is now over 5 years old)

The insanity
Is only a narrow bridge
The banks are reason and desire

He's saying insanity is nothing more than a way to get from reason to desire, so raping her is him on that bridge of insanity until he can reach desire (obviously finishing the raping)

Oh don't you see the bridge is burning
Stop screaming, don't defend yourself
Because otherwise it breaks apart

This implies that she will snap out if this insanity if she resists and ruin his moment, the rest of the song is self-explanatory. If anybody has another interpretration this is nothing more than what I think it means it's just everybody was getting side-tracked with Manson, vampires and other things I highly doubt R+ cares about.

Comon now, Manson and Cannibal Corpse are good bands and I listen to them constantly, but they cant compare to Rammstein! Rammstein has way better guitar riffs, lyrics, ect.
