Lyrics for Out of Gas as interpreted by numb

Out of Gas Lyrics
Out of gas
Out of road
Out of car
I don't know how I'm going to go and
I had a drink the other day
Opinions were like kittens
I was giving them away
I had a drink the other day
I had a lot to say
And I said:

You will come down soon, too
You will come down too soon
You will come down soon, too
You will come down
You'll come down, come down
You will come down soon, too
You will come down too soon
You will come down soon, too
Soon enough you will come down, come down

Out of gas
Out of road
Out of car
I don't know how I'm going to go and
I had a drink the other day
Opinions were like kittens
I was giving them away
I had a drink the other day
I had a lot to say
And I said:

You will come down soon, too
You will come down too soon
You will come down soon, too
Soon enough you will come down, come down
You will come down soon, too
You will come down too soon
You'll come down, come down
You'll come down, come down

i figure it's him realizing how cyclical drug use is. when you do a drug and get high, everything is great. you feel great, more importantly, then sooner or later you crash, or as it is known in the drug world, you come down. it's a depressing feeling and sometimes it's so intense you wish you hadn't of done the drug in the first place. But once that's over with, you're ripe and ready to go at it again. Always coming down too soon.

clearly, this song is about a person being down on their luck, and having people around them that are not experiencing the same life situations. isaac is simply letting them know that they, too, will experience the not-so-fabulous times in life.

absolutely fucking fabulous.

I agree with what has already been said. If it means anything, I've always had an affinity for this song -- I just dig the overall tone I guess. It reminds me alot of Sonic Youth's stuff -- and that's never a bad thing.

to me its saying "out of gas out of road"
meaning that every one gets stuck in there life and that the only thing you have left is your thoughts and that it happens to every one in "you will come down soon too"

The lyrics of this song may be some of the most creative in all of Brock's writings. The first three lines are the most creative way I could think of to say that he is literally stuck in life, and has no where to go from there. Being out of gas, out of car, means even if he does obtain one, he still doesn't have the other to go anywhere. And in the event he can get those aspects figured out, he doesn't even have road to move on, and so he is still completely and utterly stuck.

So where all roads in life end, in intoxication. he drunkenly is telling everyone around him that no matter how good it is at that moment, they are gonna fall back into the same position he is. And he is telling everyone, like one gives away kittens....

I dunno, that seems less insightful now that I've written it down.

i dont know what his personal story is behind this song is but it seems to be designed to help someone who's down and out cope with it, whether their out of money with no place to go or coming down off hard drugs.

by the way "opinions were like kittens i was giving them away": are you kidding me? that is the greatest fuckin lyric ever...

^ Agrees with PeaceLoveAkGun

You will come down soon too.

Note: The music in this song is a descending riff, which adds to the effect of 'coming down', as the riff ends during the chorus the drummer hits the cymbal, making a 'crash' effect, or hitting rock bottom, or being buried.

I don't think he hints at all that drugs are the problem. The general mood of the record is that he's not really happy with his situation. Out of gas, road, car is just describing that state of not having much more to carry himself on, so he gets drunk to feel better. The kittens line is just the way drunk people are when they're intoxicated; 'inisghtful' but not really. The chorus is just 'it happened to me, getting bummed out and it'll happen to you, sooner than you know.' That's how I see it anyway.

I agree as well. This song does sound a lot like it's about him coming down from a drug and telling other people they will come down soon as well, as in sober up. He had a drink, had things to say, and started talking about coming down. The rest of the meaning I'm not too sure of, but I agree with a lot of the things others have said.

I agree that this song is about drugs, i think that it is about heroin because of the metaphore of road gas and car, (heroin is known as tar). out of gas out of road out of car i dont know how im going to go is saying that he has run out of the drug and he doesnt know how he will keep going he's had his "come down" then he warns others that they will "come down too soon." Its pretty clear to me.

I hate when people think every song is about drugs.

But anyway, I feel this is about some guy who has hit rock bottom and has nowhere else to go, and everyone else that looks down upon him he states that they will "come down soon too".

like so many other modest mouse songs, i think this is about methamphetamine use. this drug is very prominent in small towns, and trailer parks, which are the settings of many modest mouse songs.

the refrain, "you will come down soon" is a clear reference to speed. when a person is high on speed, they reach a point after a day or so (depending on how much speed they used, and in what way) where they "come down". they feel tired and extremely irritable.

"out of gas, out of car, out of road" could refer to the helplessness of the drug addict lifestyle, how redundant and pointless it is, how many people want to leave it and can't because they are addicted.

I agree with "eccentricity!" This song is about a guy who just doesn't have anywhere to go who was someone before. Maybe he was a businessman and life took a turn for the worse and now he is homeless getting drunk to forget it and instead gives people a piece of his mind and they discard him for being a bum. He tells them they will come down to his level soon. Because he was once at their level.

"You will come down soon too/You will come down too soon" That's what he told them. That's the important part to me, it seems. Yeah, he's drunk and in a bar. He's out of gas and going nowhere. He's completely fucked. That's what it seems like out of gas is, he's not doing well and he can't leave. And here, after he's hit bottom, he takes a drink, and all those assholes who think they're better than him, that's what he tells him. You will come down soon too.

I always interpretted this song as him saying he's stuck, and the parts where he talks about having a drink and saying "you will come down soon too" was him saying to people that may be looking down on him for being in a rut, or being a drunk, or whatever it may be, that they too will have their down fall, so they shouldn't judge. That's just my two cents.
