Lyrics for Monkey Gone to Heaven as interpreted by numb

Monkey Gone to Heaven Lyrics
There was a guy
An underwater guy who controlled the sea
Got killed by ten million pounds of sludge
From New York and New Jersey

This monkey's gone to heaven
This monkey's gone to heaven
This monkey's gone to heaven
This monkey's gone to heaven

The creature in the sky
Got sucked in a hole now
There's a hole in the sky
And the ground's not cold
And if the ground's not cold
Everything is going to burn
We'll all take turns
I'll get mine, too

This monkey's gone to heaven
This monkey's gone to heaven
This monkey's gone to heaven
This monkey's gone to heaven

Rock me, Joe!

If man is 5
If man is 5
If man is 5

Then the devil is 6
Then the devil is 6
Then the devil is 6
Then the devil is 6

And if the devil is 6
Then God is 7
And God is 7
And God is 7

This monkey's gone to heaven
This monkey's gone to heaven
This monkey's gone to heaven
This monkey's gone to heaven
This monkey's gone to heaven
This monkey's gone to heaven
This monkey's gone to heaven
This monkey's gone to heaven
This monkey's gone to heaven

I think this is such a great song, and one of my favourite pixies songs. the number part is so cool - man is 5 cos we count in fives/tens cos of our fingers, the devil is 6 cos 666 is the number of the beast, and god is 7 cos that's the heavenly number (tons of 7s in revelation, world created in seven days etc etc). I <3 the pixies and I know someone who wants this song at his funeral - but I can't decide if this is great, or freaky?

it's been said before, but not on this site seemingly, but this song seems to be about the ruinous effect on the environment of human pollution. Black Francis said that the inspiration for the song was a sense of anger at the destruction of the natural world, and this is clear from the lyrics...

In the first verse some kind of underwater worker is killed by all the trash from N.Y and N.J being dumped in the sea. I think the line "this monkey's gone to heaven" refers to this fellow. Humans are 'monkeys' we evolved from them, and this one has died and gone to heaven.

The second verse continues on a broader note, refering to the depletion of the ozone layer ("there's a hole in the sky") and the global warming consequences thereof ("everything's gonna burn...") this is everybody's problem: ("we'll all take turns") and now I think that the line about the monkey going to heaven instead refers to the singer dying due to the collapse of the earths environment.

I've no idea how the final verse relates to this, although I like the interpretation given by tenniel above.

I think the final verse is just related to the general crazed weirdness of the Pixies.

Francis said the verse 'This monkeys gone to heaven' was just some words he made up so he wouldn't forget the tune. He was originally planning out replacing it (like how Paul McCartney started with Scrambled Eggs and turned it into Yesterday) but he liked it so he kept it in.
The number part is supposed to be from Hebrew scriptures. Some kind of hierarchy in the Hebrew religion.

I agree with Zot for the main part of the song. I think the 'this monekey's gone to heaven' line could relate to humans needlessly testing and killing animals for research.

the last verse is a thing called numerology where certain numbers turn up in certain parts of the bible like 40 days and 40 nights shit like that. But 7 is the holly number and 6 is the devil apparently. So man must be five half way between good and evil and thus neutral free thinking neither made to be evil or good. This is amazing because such a complex song came out of Frank just messing with some lyrics? Wow

ah I just realised it could be that numerology is used as a metaphore to explane why man does this to the earth he lives on - amazing

First, you must take in to account a "trilogy of songs" on Doolittle, tracks 5,6,7, which then culminates in track 13, "Hey." Now, looking at the lyrics, "Man in 5 [x3]...":

man is 5 (x3) = 15. 15 songs after "Here comes your man" would be "here comes" again. Does this indicate that examining man is a circular process? does that make it meaningless, or more profound? maybe it means that looking at man means looking at oneself, and looking at oneself is the key to understanding man as a whole.

devil is 6 (x5) = 30. 30 songs after "Dead" is "dead" AGAIN. there is so much meaning and complexity here that i don't even think that i should try and attempt it at this juncture.

god is 7 (x3) = 21. 21 songs after "Monkey" is "Hey". Only God permits an escape from endless circularity. And Hey is the next level of understanding!

There is only one song on all of doolittle that features guest musicians: "Monkey Gone To Heaven." The cello is present throughout the song playing a pattern that mirrors the parts of the other instruments. The violin also appears plucking out a similar part. Because these parts are all mirrored in the parts of the other instruments they do not stand out very much from the fabric of the music, but the cello part does break away from this pattern on "God is 7" where it soars briefly and beautifully. The last sound we hear on "Monkey" is also a note held by the cello. If this isn't an appearance of God on this cd I don't know what is.

an appearance of god on this CD???
Did they acknoledge God as a collaberator on this album? If not there could be some big trouble. God knows some influential people and The Pixies could wind up in a little bit of a mess.

Um... how is 5 halfway between 6 and 7? 6 1/2 is halfway between 6 and 7.

I think the god and devil stuff is supposed to give a sort of apocalyptic overtone to the song. Also, I think the monkey is humankind - we're going to kill ourselves, we're just monkeys - another type of animal on the planet, not something special.

i think deddatlas is talking crap. as there are 15 songs on the cd any multiple of 15 will take you back to the same track of you loop round. The sum of all the numbers and the times they are repeated is 66, but i cant see any relevence in this number either. i agree with caitsith01's superior counting skills too. how is 5 between 6 and 7??? surly its showing man is less than the devil, who in turn is less than god

Umm, an idea about the last section.
Man is 5, but the devil is 6, because he's like pure evil or whatever. And if the devil is 6 then god is 7 because he's even worse for allowing all that shit to take place and for creating humans in the first place who destroy the planet.

Or it could mean that humans are even further from god than the devil, because we destroy our earth and don't even care.

6 is the number of the beast, 7 is the number of perfection(among others), and man was created on the 5th day, i think

best pixies song ever!

I always thought the line "this monkey's gone to heaven" is just using the monkey as a metaphor for man, since we evolved from apes and all. Maybe Frank was making a statement that although man has evolved physically, the nature of man hasn't, case in point man's disregard for nature with the "ten million pounds of sludge from New York and New Jersey".

I always thought the last verse refers to the monkey's (or man's, whatever u want to call him) ascension to heaven. from 5 to 6 to 7(we all go to heaven).
