There was a film back in '01 called Haiku Tunnel that started off with this song. In the commentary for it, the director/main actor in the film called it "the best rock song ever".

I'm with him. Debaser is fantastic. And wicked weird.

i think i've seen this film seven or eight times, my french teacher is fond of watching highschoolers squirm

this song is amazing anyhow, it took me the longest time to connect the two

and rogue wave does a pretty great cover if anyone is interested

Haha, when I heard this as a kid I always thought the line: "I'm un chien Andalusia!" was really "I'm a shake and a lose ya!" - classically wrong.

though the movie is "Un Chien," Francis pronounces it une chienne, which means bitch. maybe he mispronounces it accidentally, or maybe it's a play on the title rather than a direct reference. I prefer the latter, because it suggests that Francis thinks himself a lesser Dali, the bitch version of him. And he wants to grow up to be a debaser like Dali.

btW, anyone who's into surrealist films like Un Chien Andalou should also see L'Age D'or, also a Dali/Bunuel collaboration. The latter is infamous for its anti-religious & anti-clerical imagery. It was shown only once, and much of the audience were so enraged, riots ensued. (Which the filmmakers might well have considered a success, as pissing off the bourgeoisie was mostly what they had in mind.) Somehow a print was saved, and decades later the film was restored.

This song is about Don Levine, a professor at Umass Amherst who teaches an avant-garde film class (still does). Black disagreed with him in lecture and Don Levine in some way or another shot him down--debased him as it were. The "Debaser" is Don Levine.

i like how it almost sounds like he's screaming slicing up "bibles" not eyeballs. don't know if that was intentional or subconscious lyrical ambiguity.

i took the film class with don levine a year ago and he actually introduces himself to the class as "the debaser" of pixies notoriety. he's a cool guy but he tells the entire plot of a film right before he shows it. and he still shows "Un Chien Andalou"

i know it is about the film but i also like how the words take on new sounds in the song, and it makes it seem like they are singing about the 'girl' he is always mentioning.

'don't know about you but i am un chien andalusia' sounds a lot like 'don't don't about you but i am doing SHIT, m'gonna lose you'

OH yeah ive seen this movie i have this huge dali musem proply 30 minutes from my home its like my most favorite place ever., onece the had like a exhibit call daliwood and it was like a bunch of dali movies and i slightly remember seeing a part of Un Chien Andalou (it was like a dude feeling up a girl). im glad i read the lyrics to this song i though it said my balls instead of eyeballs.
