Lyrics for Debaser as interpreted by numb

Debaser Lyrics
Got me a movie
I want you to know
Slicing up eyeballs
I want you to know
Girly so groovy
I want you to know
Don't know about you
But I am un chien andalusia

Want to grow
Up to be
Be a debaser, debaser

Got me a movie
Ha ha ha ho
Slicing up eyeballs
Ha ha ha ho
Girly so groovie
Ha ha ha ho
Don't know about you
But I am un chien andalusia

Debaser

andalucía (a city in spain) is where the dog was from. in english the city\'s name is spelled andalusia (go figure). in french \"andalou\" would be the spanish, or castillian, equivalent of \"andaluz.\" finally, andaluz is the denomination given to a person who is from andalucía.

oh, and (Salvador Felipe Jacinto) Dalí was from Spain and went to Paris in 1928. He was not French.

I't s great how he wants to grow up to be something that lowers somthing down. Becoming taller just to make something else lower or smaller or whatever, I like the irony of that

What does this song mean to me?

To "debase" is to corrupt or morally degrade. What strikes me as most disturbing in this song is not Black Francis' manic laughter, but the fact that he wants to grow up to morally corrupt the world in the same way that the eyeball scene in 'Un Chien Andalou' corrupted him.

In an interview, Black Francis said:
'I wish Bunuel was still alive. He made this film about nothing in particular. The title itself is a nonsense. With my stupid, pseudo-scholar, naive, enthusiast, avant-garde-ish, amateurish way to watch 'Un Chien Andalou' (twice), I thought: 'Yeah, I will make a song about it,' he sings: "un chien andalou"...It sounds too French, so I will sing "un chien andalusia", it sounds good, no?'
(translated from a Spanish interview)

I think its about a kid seeing the fucked up movie he is referring to, and wants to imitate it... cos thats what kids do right, they want to imiate what they see on TV (hence the line "wanna grow up to be a debaser") and all the "slicing up eyeballs" shit is like about the kid trying to do all that, trying to imitate it, "trying it at home" as it were... dear lord that made no sense. Oh well, I know what I'm on about!!!

I lurve pixies lyrics...

Marilyn Manson and Black Francis have cited Luis Bunuel as a big influence. If you are fan of either of these bands, you should watch some of his movies. A Spanish-bred filmmaker who moved to Mexico in the 1950's and made a bunch of great masterpieces there before moving to France in the early 60's and making more classics. His surrealist imagery is very much an influence on The Pixies.

Yeah, the movie is kinda skewed and pretty hard to understand, full of symbols and seemingly meaningless imagery. A great movie though. Don't know the song

i just took that avant-garde film class at UMass with the professor who this song is apparently about. the term debaser isn't referring to someone who bring somethgin down to nothing, but more someone revealing. the professor has a reputation for giving away important scenes and endings to the films we watch in his class. i heard from the TA of the class that this song is a tribute to the professor from the singer (apparently he had the same class in his UMass stint), of course with Dali and Brunel's "Un Chien Andalou" being one of the more noteable films we watched from surrealists. It's rumored if not known for sure to be about the teacher.

Everybody's hitting the nail on the head here EXCEPT it's always been my impression that "Girlie so Groovy" referred to the part of the film where the man is wearing drag (the nurse uniform).

Sometimes I tend to think of the Pixies as a Surrealist band. The imagery that they incorporate into their songs is so dark and demented. Their lyrics seem totally free-associative. Great song and a great movie.

Being 1) I lived in that particular area in the far south of Spain as a kid when my dad was stationed down at the Navy base in Rota, in the province of Cadiz, where the natives call/speak that whole southern area _Andalucia_; and 2) the word Chien is indeed French for "dog"--thus the title translates as: Un (A) Chien (dog) Andalou (which the French call that southern region in Spain called "Andalucia")--Voila! Or rather in Espanol, !Ole!
Also having partcipated in the '80s Boston scene as a 20-something--about the time the Pixies formed and became a band--any good Boston dance club worth their while (The Metro, Spit/Axis, Man Ray, Ground Zero, etc.) to more underground tunage also ran visuals those DJs matched up with right music for "ambiance" and lots of the visuals came in the form of those old surrealist films, surprise surprise! I too saw Un Chien Andalou just watching it while dancing with my friends to Cabaret Voltaire, Ministry, Fad Gadget, and the like. Talk about a cultural multi-tasking form of '80s Boston nightime fun--whee!

i'll tell you what its about right now. I go to Umass like someone did before me and I've taken the same class as one of the pixies did, Avant Garde Film. The song is about the professor that teaches Avant Garde Film. Not only do we see the movie in which the eyeball is sliced in two in the class, the professor makes every single movie we see into some "debased" film with a heavily erotic undertone. He once said the film Crash was about people who "got off" on car crashes......

un chien andalou had intentional erotic undertone, as with almost all surrealism it follows a freudian dreamscape and symbolism..
the song on the other hand i think is not really a narrative, but just singing a load of words that produce a sarcastic/mocking pretentious kind of character..

He was correct, it is: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115964/

Anyway, awesome song. I don't think there's a deep meaning, just referencing the film and trying to be surreal.

Has anyone listened to the cover of this done by Rogue Wave? Not too shabby, either, but nothing compares to the original.

God I love this song. But isn't it "Girl, you're so groovie"? Not "Girlie so groovie". I listened to it live, that's what it sounded like. And listening to the Studio Version, I'm pretty sure. But either way, awesome.

"If you ever want to freak out your parents, blast this."

Well, I AM someone's parent, and I LOVE blasting this song (and all Pixies songs) at maximum volume! Especially in my car. My wife and kid don't understand how I can listen to this stuff! XD

And I think it's 'girlie's so groovy'.
