So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Ooh, stop
With your feet on the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah (yeah)
Your head will collapse, and there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself
Where is my mind?
Where is my mind?
Where is my mind?
Way out in the water, see it swimmin'
I was swimmin' in the Caribbean
Animals were hiding behind the rock
Except the little fish
Bumped into me, I swear he was trying to talk to me, koi-koi
Where is my mind?
Where is my mind?
Where is my mind?
Way out in the water, see it swimmin'
With your feet on the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse, and there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself
Where is my mind?
Where is my mind?
Where is my mind?
Way out in the water, see it swimmin'
With your feet on the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
With your feet on the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah (yeah)
Your head will collapse, and there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself
Where is my mind?
Where is my mind?
Where is my mind?

I was swimmin' in the Caribbean

Try this trick and spin it, yeah

Also, I think there is a clear line between where a songwriter got his inspiration from, and what the song is actually about. So, the song may have been inspired by a scuba diving trip, but the meaning of the song can be quite different.
I do agree with you . May be related to scuba diving but the message underneath is about craziness and freedom
@bellyfloor yeah, I\'m pretty sure those who take that as a literal meaning of a song are missing the thought process? Scuba diving was the trigger of inspiration to make him think of something...\r\nLyric writer here, and one day I found a hot bottle of flat lemonade under the seat of my car... that\'s what I\'d tell interviewer\'s if I was famous..\r\nReminded me of how innocent love is at first, but can go bad left in the sun... \r\nThere\'s a much deeper story to it, though.. \r\nAka being a straight Aussie 17yr old girl in love with a 34yr old Dutch girl in a bad relationship. Certainly not about lemonade, but no one would ever guess that, though!????
