Saw a silhouette across a fluorescent
Floating overhead, undoing his helmet
Through the murky beams and blue-green sea life
I saw him spinnin' towards the moonlight
I pull him in, he wasn't breathin'
His eyes were wide and I saw two of me there
There's an ugly buzz that hovers just above the quiet
Found a way to make it silent
I'm comin' up for air [Repeat: x2]

Air [Repeat: x2]

They hold my hand and ask me to pull through
A voice I know says "Dear, he probably can't hear you"
Comin' up for air [Repeat: x3]

General Comment:The "buzz" he hears isn't literal. I agree with all the other imagery you are analyzing, but the "buzz" is his depression and apathy for life. It ties in with the mellow musical tones. He finally found a way to make the "buzz" silent by jumping off a bridge, obviously. He tried to kill himself. Then the firefighter rescues him and the point of view shifts to him.

"Coming up for air" is the juxtaposition of the jumper coming out of the water, and his hope of killing himself to find relief from his life that is figuratively drowning him

General Comment:the first part of the song is about the drowning victim being spotted with a search light.
the victim has a helmet on, which the rescuer takes off.
his body is floating in the water towards the moons reflection
pulling him in/he wasnt breathing is self explanitory
the rescuer is reflected in the victims eyes
theres a buzz off noise from the people gathered around him, which he quiets down

the last part of the song is from the victims view point where he is aware off whats happening but unable to respond

    General Comment:Geez people.

It COULD mean that he is in hospital, but the first stanza is likely to be the drowning man's view of someone diving in to save him. Any double metaphor besides that is possible, but "blue green sea life" and "moonlight" are pretty clear. And why would a doctor wear a helmet?

The rescuer could be a diver, fireman, doctor, friend, parachutist, or james bond. The point is that he drags him out of the water.

Oh and one more thing, IF YOU LISTEN REALLY CAREFULLY DURNG THE LAST STANZA, you can hear the sound of an ambulance-like wail. If the man was already in hospital he wouldn't need an ambulance.

General Comment:I liked some of the interpretations here...I think it's possible that (as someone said on the first page) that the song functions as a metaphor...drowning in water (and being rescued), and possibly a person in a coma in the hospital.

When I hear this song, I see a picture in my mind...a scene...of this person who is being rescued from drowning out in the sea, rescuers trying to revive him, but the rescued person who IS/ISN'T revived.

I like the theory that it is an out of body experience for the individual who is rescued. When someone commented that we should pay close attention to the lyric "I saw two of me there" I got another clue about the narration of the song...I think.

It sounds right that the first stanza is sung by the drowned individual. The beginning of the next stanza is sung by the rescuer. When the rescuer/narrator says "I saw two of me there," afterwards, it's like the narration changes, and the next two lines are said by the drowned person.

"There's an ugly buzz that hovers just above the quiet. I found a way to make it silent"
Especially in the second line the singer (Ben) slows down and his voice gets quieter. I think these lines refer to the buzz and noise around the rescue scene...the crowd of people around, or the noise of the rescuers moving around, shouting orders, as they try to save the person. The person finds a way to make it silent...IMO, this is as though the person mentally blocks out the noise...and it is at this time, that the person has 'decided' not to wake up (if you believe that the person dies in the end).

General Comment:I know it sounds a bit simple compared to the elaborate descriptions but I always thought it was about someone in the hospital in a coma.

General Comment:I always picture this song with Hospitol Song and Army.

This song in particular seems to be about a guy, probably in a small plane that crashes or something, and it doesn't really seem real to him as he starts to sink. he has one of those experiences where you feel like your watching things happen, and when he realizes he snaps back to reality, but is too hurt to save himself, he can't surface so he stares up thinking he's coming up. But eventually he's saved, in a coma or something, he can't respong but he's aware of what's going on, though no one knows it.

Then I see it linking to Hospitol song in that perhaps the dude in Hospitol song is the same guy in recovery, but the crash hurt somethign too much so he's gonna loose an appendage or something, so he lays there and thinks about things, one of which is the Army.

    I dunno, works for me.

General Comment:I think the person in the first stanza is trying to save a parachutist. However, he can't quite save him, and begins to drown himself. Hey, that's how I see it.

"I found a way to make it silent"

The ugly buzzing stops because he goes under too.

General Comment:ok what I think it is, is that there are two people talking.

Saw a sillhouette cross a flurorescent
    Floating overhead, undoing his helmet
Through the murky beams of blue-green sea life
I saw him spinning towards the moonlight

--That is the person drowning looking through the water at somone that got off their bike to save him. Spinning towards the moonlight means that he was just sinking deeper into the water while staring at the man.

    I pulled him in
    He wasn't breathing
    His eyes were wide
I saw two of me there
There's an ugly buzz that hovers just above the quiet
I found a way to make it silent

--When he begins this verse, the music changes a little and he sings stronger, as if he were singing as someone else. So this verse is from the perosn on the bike's point of view. He pulls him out of the water and he wasn't breathing, his eyes were wide and blank and he could see himself in his eyes. The buzz could be a helocopter comming to rescue and he made it silent by covering his ears.

    I'm coming up for air

--This is just the chorus, the guy is pulling the man out of the water, therefore the man is comming up for air.

    They hold my hand
And ask me to pull through
    A voice I know says
"Dear, he probably can't hear you"

--This is the man on the bike that rescued him;s point of view. He's in the hospital next to his bed begging him to stay alive. But the man is already dead.

General Comment:i think this song is about him nearly drowning, or some other accident and having an out of body experience and then emerging from maybe a coma? or NOT emerging...
