I wish it was last September
When we could lose ourselves in crowds everyday.
'Cause Emaline, she'll walk in time.
She's not the same, that's all you can say.

When I've heard enough I tell myself
That we've learned our lesson
But I don't want to walk away from Emaline.
They're talking now.

Does she know what they're saying?
She's go the air to float above it.
I'm sinking into someone should pay.
She's dear to me and so expensive.
Now I'm not talking about money.
When money talks, I hate to listen,
But lately it's been screaming in my ear.
When I've heard enough I tell myself
That we've learned our lesson
But I don't want to walk away from Emaline.
It only took me one look to understand Emaline.

Sometimes I don't know what she's saying.
Sometimes I do,
Sometimes I don't know what she's saying,
But I know, I know,
I know what she wants to believe.

I wish it was last September.
Don't let me walk away from Emaline
For stupid reasons.
Now I'm talking about money.

When money talks, I hate to listen,
But lately it's been screaming in my ear.
My one advice, girls need attention,
Or are you different than all mine?

For what it's worth, she's got attention
From people like a.c. black and white.
When I've heard enough, I tell you what.
I really shouldn't sit here and whine,
I'll take you down to see my Emaline.

General Comment:I always thought that it was about a girl he fell in love with who was disabled.
If you think about it, the expensive part isn't always money, it could be emotionally expensive.
"She's got the air, to float above it" --> could mean that she doesn't understand what's being said about her, she's oblivious but he can hear it and it makes him mad.
She's right in front of him but out of his reach.
Maybe he got her help, that's why he has to take you to see his Emaline

I never thought horse. That's an odd analysis of a beautiful song.

General Comment:It says she's high maintenance, but NOT talking about money. I think the song's talking about this girl who always wants attention and this love and THAT'S how she's high maintenance.

"Yeah, what advice, girls need attention"

I think this girl Emaline always wants attention and the narrator or Ben or whoever is thinking about walking away sometimes, but then he realizes he can't/shouldn't walk away because of such a dumb reason.

General Comment:So many good lines. "Money talks, I hate to listen, but lately it's been screaming in my ear". Pretty self explanatory, but a nice turn of phrase. Also love the opening line.
Most of all it's a beautiful song. The piano versions are stunning. The version below is also good with piano, bass and drums.

"This is a song that was recorded for the first album, but um, we took it off because it had an acoustic guitar in it and that's against the law."

General Comment:To me, Emaline has always seemed like a predecessor to other girls Ben Folds has written about: Kate/Cathy, Sara, etc. I think she just does things differently and requires a lot of interpretation.

General Comment:I just love "I wish it was last september, where we could lose ourselves in (clouds or crowds?) everyday." I wish I knew for sure what the lyrics were...and what evaxtly it means...I understand wanting to go bakc to a time when you weren't self conscious and could lose yourself, but whether he says "clouds" or "crowds" profoundly changes the meaning...

General Comment:actually this song is Ben Folds- it was recorded originally for Majosha in 1989 and then again by only Ben Folds in Greensboro NC in Feb of 1990 way before Ben Folds Five was together-

It was then recorded for Ben Folds Five to be included on their debut, self titled album (1995) but as people have already noted- it was not included because of the guitar.

It then appeared on the Naked Baby Photos (Ben Folds Five) album in 1998 before being reintroduced in 2002 on Ben Folds Live.

It was long rumor through out the online community that this song was about a horse- it was a running joke that i remember hearing about even before it was released in 1998.

This remains my favorite Ben Folds (Five) song no matter what it is intended to be about- for me it is just beautiful and lovely.

General Comment:summerlr, it was originally by Ben Folds Five (and was cut from their first album), but Ben Folds later played it solo.

And for anyone still debating the meaning of the song:

"Emaline. About a very strange girlfriend I had. We were a weird couple and she was misunderstood. I spent a lot of time explaining for her."
    - Ben Folds

    (source: geocities.com/rarebff/…)

Personally, I wish it _was_ about a horse. It'd be more original, and almost more romantic.
