Lyrics for Vasoline as interpreted by dsfire

Vasoline Lyrics
One time a thing occurred to me
What's real, and what's for sale?
Blew a kiss and tried to take it home
It isn't you, isn't me
Search for things you can't see
Going blind, out of reach
Somewhere in the vasoline

Two times and it has rendered me
Punch drunk and without bail
Think I'd be safer all alone
Flies in the vasoline we are
Sometimes it blows my mind
Keep getting stuck here all the time

You'll see the look and you'll see the lies
You'll eat the lies, and you will.

It isn't you, isn't me
Search for things you can't see
Going blind, out of reach
Somewhere in the vasoline

this song sounds like it could be a reference to beating it to porn. what's real and what's for sale....he realized that actual sex is different from looking in girly mags and spanking it. then of course the talk of vaseline, and the going blind line....hey that could be a reference to how people used to say you go blind if you wack off too much.

seriously, i'm kidding. i doubt scott weiland would devote an entire song about that, and then release it as a single.

also why do they spell it vasoline with an o?

im not real sure what this song is about, but i think it has somethin to do with whats real and whats fake. he's tryin to figure out the difference between the truth and whats being advertised to us. it reminds me of a commercial or something advertising a product and how it's so great but they say all that bs just to sell the product and it's not necessarily the truth. he says how we are all stuck in between what's real and whats not (flies in the vasoline we are).

I think this about how we always manage to get stuck in the same situations even though we see them coming.

Actually, suckmykiss, you might be right. I mean, you never know...and to add to it, there's also the line "think I'd be safer on my own"...I don't think so, but I'm just saying, it does fit pretty well.

I thought this song was about him searching for true love when all the women he meets are only after material things. He keeps letting these women fool him into thinking they really love him and not his money, only to be d*cked over again and again.

also, the reason they spelled 'vasoline' with an 'o' was to avoid copyright infringement since 'vaseline' is a registered trademark...

To me it was a reminder of my relationship with this girl. The way she came across in public was way different then in private. Then after some time we would break up and get back together

"flies in the vasoline we are
sometimes it blows my mind
keep getting stuck here all the time"

and we were literally stuck, and our relationship didn't move anywhere

To me it just seems to be a general statement about people here on Earth, just trying to find out meaning in their lives because they're stuck here like flies in vaseline, so obviously they should try to fulfill their purpose, which I think is what the line "search for things that we can't see". My opinion, think about it.

This is the song that did it for me. I saw the video on MTV back in '94 when I was eleven and wouldn't believe what I was hearing. Purple is the album which sits in my CD player the most out of my collection.

it is about having sex with someone who first acts like they want it and leads you on, then claims it was "rape".

"what's real, and what's for sale" is him trying to determine whether his lover's come-ons stem from genuine affection, or is a setup. if his lover was a prostitute, it would be pretty cut & dry ("what's for sale"), but obviously she isn't asking for money in return.

"it isn't you" refers to his lover's facade and intent to screw him over, or it could refer to his realization that she isn't his true soulmate; "it isn't me" is him denying that he's a rapist, nor his actions deserving of criminal charges (kind of ironic when you consider their song "sex type thing"). "search for things you can't see" refers to him trying to figure out what her real intentions are.

"going blind, out of reach somewhere in the vasoline" is a metaphor for a fly caught in a trap. fortunately, scott chose something besides a mundane, cliched fly trap (like a spider web) to make his point. a fly caught in a spider web just doesn't have the graphical impact of one stuck in a jar of vasoline...not to mention the sexual implications of vasoline.

suckmykiss you were close to right but it's about a guy who keeps going to jail for picking up hookers. The lines "Whats for real and whats for sale" and "two times it has rendered me punch drunk and without bail" proof my point. Seems Scott sings alot of songs about sex doesn't he?

Yeah, could sound like firing off knuckle-babies with vaseline and porno. "what's real, and what's for sale?" "Blew a kiss and tried to take it home," trying to pick chicks up.

"Two times and it has rendered me punch drunk and without bail," he failed to pick up any chicks so he goes home to masturbate.

Sucks.

STP was my favorite band when I was in 6th grade, I remember when they first came out, I love them...

Anywho this reminds me of those yellow plastic pouch things that you hang out in your back porch to catch and trap flies...He must be referring to superficial things that we feed into...superficiality then eats us alive. The "search for things you can't see part" could mean that we get out of touch with meaningful things in life (spiritual/family/etc) as opposed to superficial things like getting drunk and cheap sex.
