I am smellin' like the rose
that somebody gave me on
my birthday deathbed
I am smellin' like the rose
that somebody gave me
'cause I'm dead & bloated
Yeah, and she says it's natural
I feel I've come of age
When she peeks I start to run

You can't swallow what I'm thinkin'
You can't swallow what I'm thinkin'

I run through the world
thinkin' `bout tomorrow

I am trampled under sole of
antoher man's shoes
Guess I walked too softly

Oh yeah, and she says it's natural
I feel I've come of age
When she peeks I start to run

You can't swallow what I'm thinkin'
You can't swallow what I'm thinkin'

General Comment:The song is about insecurity and the ability to conquer it.

It's the same feeling you get the first time you show your naked body to a lover for the first time.
It's the same feeling you get when people walk all over you.
And the main message is that it's hard to discuss how you feel and how to people and a true friend giving you comfort is really the only thing that can stop this wave of thinking.
When people you care about really give you love and comfort, it's usually in either really great times (birthday) or really bad times (deathbed) where you're unafraid of people who couldn't understand you and might be uncomfortable hearing your inner thoughts.

General Comment:i always thought this song was about a bad reaction to using hard drugs for the first time

i am smelling like a rose - smoking weed and opiates together smells like roses

and she says its natural - your panicking asking people if your supposed to feel this way and theyre telling you its natural

you cant swallow what im thinking - your freaking out and thinking to yourself no one understands the way you feel

aborted childs do not have funerals... and its scotts way of saying rest in peace to a soul that was never given life... so he leaves a rose in memory

General Comment:Scott Weiland came up with the main riff to this song. To convey the riff to the rest of the band, he used his voice to approximate how he heard the guitar parts sounding a la Beavis and Butthead: Dat-dah, da-da-da-da-da...etc This was from a guitar magazine interview with Dean or Robert DeLeo.

General Comment:This song is probably about feeling betrayed during a relationship. "I am trampled under soles of another man's shoes because I walked to softly" could mean how he never stuck up for himself in arguments. "And she says it's natural," means how she feels about the whole thing.
