Lyrics for And So It Goes as interpreted by kevin

And So It Goes Lyrics
In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lovers past
Until a new one comes along

I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense

And every time I've held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you soon I suppose

But if my silence made you leave
Then that would be my worst mistake
So I will share this room with you
And you can have this heart to break

And this is why my eyes are closed
It's just as well for all I've seen
And so it goes, and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows

So I would choose to be with you
That's if the choice were mine to make
But you can make decisions too
And you can have this heart to break

And so it goes, and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows

this song really speaks to me, since i've definitely lost relationships by keeping silent. i really love it, and it reminds me of one specific time in my life, and i end up crying almost every time i hear it. i have a great version of it live at the NYE concert and i love it.

I heard this song from the mixed honor choir in Alabama and just cried my heart out. I am a very quiet person and have experienced good and bad things because of it. It is hard to know when to stay quiet and when to express your love or gratitude. Love the love. And dont be afraid.

My friends at All-State told me I had to hear this, and each verse reminds me of one of my friends. The first verse makes me think of Kelli L. she is there to heal wounds and to help me and give me a "room" in her heart until I'm better. The second reminds me of Lindsay B. I speak to her a LOT and I do it in "cautious tones" because I know she will always know what's up with me. Once Im through I feel like I have spoken too much, and so I try to be silent and not speak so much. Hence, my silence is my self-defense. The third reminds me of really of myself. I never really see the beauty of the "rose" (situation) until it has passed, and I while it is there I feel all the thorns and negativeness about it. The fourth, without a doubt reminds me of Jessi L. She is the most soft-spoken, yet honest person I know, and I am sure she is afraid that her silence will make others leave, when in fact it makes them stay. And while they stay, she finds a place for them, and allows them to leave and break her heart. The fifth, oddly, reminds me of Ashley B. It seems odd, but I really think she keeps her "eyes" closed because of all she has seen. I dont wanna tell anything, but it very much applies to her. And lastly, the 6th verse is Melissa J. she wants to be a friend to all, that's if she could make the choice, but it's not always her choice, so sometimes, she will kindly acknowledge that we can make choices too, and lets people break her heart. And so it goes, and so it goes.

sigh. yeah ... my high school a capella group sang this as one of our standard numbers. we always did it really well ... I think because it is such a touching song, one can't help but WANT to sing it well.

it's about, well, just caring very much for somebody and not knowing if that person feels in kind, and then just throwing caution to the wind and putting yourself out there. everything about this song is just so heartbreaking ... and billy joel is just, well, I can't think of anyone I'd rather hear sing this song (well ... I can think of a boy I'd love to have sing this to me, but that's beside the point). yeah. so. awesome.

yeah. our chorus just did this song too (guys only though). and it's an amazing song. the crowd always loves this song. so sincere.
i can relate to this part the best:
"And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you soon I suppose "
and this is my favorite line:
"And you can have this heart to break "
*sigh*

um... this song kills me. i hadn't heard it until i sang it with my treble chorus. what's weird is that at the same time as we were practicing it i had been talking to this guy and... he admitted that he liked me but he also liked this other girl. but when he said it he used the analogy of roses. and so this song is absolutely perfect. my response of course was: "so i would choose to be with you, that's if the choice were mine to make, but you can make decisions too, and you can have this heart to break". that kills me. um... in case you were wondering he did make a decision and... it wasn't me. so this song is just... so so sad. *sigh* beautiful.

yeah, our choir di it in college. our choir is compulsory for all music students, so you have all the cool guys who stand there looking awkward, mumbling rather than singing. then this American choirmaster came to give us a masterclass and got us to do this song. You should have seen the reaction! Even the cool jazz guys were just swept away! they actually sang! the atmosphere was incredible. after we finished it was just silence. never before or since has a piece had such an effect on us. beautiful.

Just a little tidbit about this song- my dad heard that it was supposed to be on "An Innocent Man" but it was too depressing for that album.

I played this song for a girl who gave me a hard time about not telling her how i felt. I ended up sharing my room and wish i never did. this song brings me to tears ever since.

krisstie - Your dad is partially correct. This song was written around the same time as the Innocent Man songs, and was even copyrighted with them. However, An Innocent Man was more of a concept album focusing on Billy's reminiscing on the music he grew up with. So "And So it Goes" didn't fit.

I love this song. It's amazing. We learned this song in choir, and after we awhile of practising it, I was put in an akward position and I really wanted to be with this guy, and I thought he liked me (by the way he was acting). But it turned out he didn't.. "So I would choose to be with you, that's if the choice were mine to make. But you can make decisions too, and you can have this heart to break." I was willing to give him my heart. He took it and broke it.
This song means so much to me. I've learned a lot of important lessons, and I've been stronger becuase of it. Even though it hurt for awhile, I climbed back up...

I believe Billy wrote this song about Elle McPherson (unless I've mixed this song up with another). He dated her briefly before he met and married Christie Brinkley. That fits with the timing of having written it around the time of Innocent Man.

Yeap I've learned this in choir too, both this song and the choral arrangements I've sung are beautiful, you can't really go wrong with it. Gives me goosebumps.

My heart is breaking now. I'm with someone for the first time, never been in a relationship before, never wanted to be with anyone else. He has, and the first time I listened to this song was the last time I saw him when he played it for me on the piano. I really love him, but I think I've cheated him. I got into it knowing the huge possiblity that my heart would get broken, for one reason or another, and now I'm going to break his if I end this relationship like I think I will have to soon, despite how much I love him. If anyone has any input, feel free.
This song makes me feel like shit, and I think I deserve it. But it is so beautiful, so beautiful. I wish I had a choir to sing this with, but I am choirless at the moment.

Sounds like negativity (on love affair)- This love's gonna end, just like all the others.

As for cqueen17, I hope you don't always follow the advice of a bunch of internet posts by strangers. First off, I don't know much about either of you. Secondly, I don't know where you're coming from about cheating him. I would bet you know if or when you were wrong in a relationship, even if it's your first. So maybe you should just practice honesty.
Most readers won't give you any advice - they'll simply leave a tender moment alone.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm making fun of you(wink)
but some of us have been there. Maybe you should try writing a song or two about it. Like Billy.

It's not negative; The feeling that it's going to end like all the others gives way to the fear of losing the chance for a relationship in the first place.

"so i would choose to be with you, that's if the choice we mine to make. but you can make decisions, too, and you can have this heart to break." i love this, it strikes such a chord with me right now. it's about being in love with someone and saying, "i choose you, i give my heart to you, and you can do with it what you will," yet at the same time still acknowledging that they might not feel the same way. they might break your heart, but the important part is that they can have your heart to break.

Probably one of the most poetic songs Billy Joel has ever written. I can't even begin to count the number of relationships I lost because I didn't speak up...

and so it goes..

The last few lines of this song perfectly describe what I'm going through. I really like this girl, but she only wants to be friends. I would choose to be with her but she can make decisions too. She's perfect... I think about her all the time. Her last relationship had a rough ending, so she's afraid she'll get hurt again. I know that would never happen but will I get a chance? She's the only one who knows...
