So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
I was waiting on the moment
But the moment never came
All the billion other moments
Were just slipping all away
(I must have been drifting) we're just slipping all away
(Just ego-tripping)
I was wanting you to love me
But your love it never came
All the other love around me
Was just wasting all away
(I must have been tripping) was just wasting all away
(Just ego-tripping) was just wasting all away
(Must have been tripping)
I was waiting on the moment
But the moment never came
(Must have been dreaming) but the moment never came
(Just ego-tripping) but the moment never came
(Must have been tripping) but the moment never came
(Just ego-tripping) but the moment never came
(Must have been dreaming) but the moment never came
But the moment never came
But the moment never came
All the billion other moments
Were just slipping all away
(I must have been drifting) we're just slipping all away
(Just ego-tripping)
I was wanting you to love me
But your love it never came
All the other love around me
Was just wasting all away
(I must have been tripping) was just wasting all away
(Just ego-tripping) was just wasting all away
(Must have been tripping)
I was waiting on the moment
But the moment never came
(Must have been dreaming) but the moment never came
(Just ego-tripping) but the moment never came
(Must have been tripping) but the moment never came
(Just ego-tripping) but the moment never came
(Must have been dreaming) but the moment never came
But the moment never came

Alright so this song is sad in the sense of how it speaks of moments we hang on to. It reminds me of the time my ex abandoned me without giving me a heads up and it really crushed me so much. I wasn't ready to let it go... but he was since he knew all along he would leave. I waited for months to hear from him and just waiting for his love to come back meanwhile I ignored other guys who offered their love and time. I was just watching them pass me by while I was desperately holding onto this past love.... who had already slipped me by.
I'm no longer waiting for him or on anyone... Life is too short to waste it on someone who doesn't love you back.
