It was not so long ago, maybe just a year or so
When I was lonely and when looking for someone
Way down south in New Orleans just a-lookin' for a dream
And that's when I found him that's where it all begun

He was there on that night said for you I know I'm right
I'll be with you until my race is run
He walked into my life with his cold evil eyes
And with the length of his mind, he dark the sun

Well, my memory cannot speak and, oh Lord, I'm feeling weak
But I blame it on the fact that I was young
Though I know it may sound strange, there is no way I can change
What my fate has laid out for me now is done

He was there on that night, said for you I know I'm right
I'll be with you until my race is run
He walked into my life with his cold evil eyes
And with the length of his mind he dark the sun

And with the length of his mind he dark the sun

I love when the drums kick in after "that's where it all begun..."

A primordial text about a woman mistreated. A wrenching soul-cry from a broken heart - set to great American country-rock.

The deceiver/abuser is depicted in satanic terms.

Did he get her hooked on drugs? Did he cause her soul to wither and die? Has she been pushed to the point of murdering him?

A dark and powerful gem of a song.

[I always thought it was "He DARKED the sun (?)] The quirky grammar is part of why this song made such an impression on me.

It's like a Zen koan: "With the length of his mind he darked the sun".
