Didn't have the money round to buy a maury Thou
been around and seen alot to shake me anyhow
begged and borrowed sometimes i admit i even stole
but the worst crime i ever did was playing rock n' roll

but the moneys no good just get a grip on yourself (x2)

suffering convictions on a 2 inch stretch inside
the air in here is pretty thick i think i'll go outside
commited for insanity and crimes against the soul
the worst crime i ever did was play some rock n' roll

but the moneys no good just get a grip on yourself (x2)
and you should know
oooooooo

now i find from week to week the sentence sticking fast
turn the corner rub my eyes and hope the world will last
stranger from another planet welcome to our hole
just strap on your guitar and we'll play some rock n' roll

but the moneys no good just get a grip on yourself (x2)
and you should know
oooooooo

General Comment:Morry Thou is short for a car, the Morris Minor 1000cc. Even at the time the song was released, this was a very old car, but it could be bought cheaply.

General Comment:I've heard "Morry Thou" in the first line means a car Morris 1000 that was popular at this time in UK.

General Comment:the stranglers are one of my favourite bands; my dad has every single CD they ever released so i borrowed some off of him. they prolly are the most underrated band ever! half of my friends havent even heard of them.

General Comment:I recently discovered this song on an old punk album of my dear old dads. This song is so underated.. the riff is fantastic.. God bless the stranglers.

General Comment:How many bands release a debut single as assured as this? Not f***ing many! is the answer. The Stranglers must be the most underated band ever!
The lyric by Hugh Cornwell concerns the rock 'n' roll lifestyle - pre-fame.

General Comment:I bought the Stranglers' "Rattus Norvegicus" album back when it came out because I liked the cover. My friends and I played it a lot back in 1977/78 and sang along. This song was one of our particular favorites for the lyric:
"stranger from another planet welcome to our hole
just strap on your guitar and we'll play some rock n' roll"
We went around saying that to each other like an inside joke as we swaggered around the U of IL campus as "punk rockers".
Now, in 2005, I find more inspiration in the lyric:
"but the money's no good just get a grip on yourself"
