Lyrics for Lullaby (Goodnight, My Angel) as interpreted by kevin

Lullaby (Goodnight, My Angel) Lyrics
Goodnight, my angel
Time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what you've been asking me
I think you know what I've been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Wherever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away

Goodnight, my angel
Now it's time to sleep
And still so many things I want to say
Remember all the songs you sang for me
When we went sailing on an emerald bay
And like a boat out on the ocean
I'm rocking you to sleep
The water's dark
And deep inside this ancient heart
You'll always be a part of me

Goodnight, my angel
Now it's time to dream
And dream how wonderful your life will be
Someday your child may cry
And if you sing this lullabye
Then in your heart
There will always be a part of me

Someday we'll all be gone
But lullabyes go on and on...
They never die
That's how you
And I
Will be

I had picked out this song, alone, as my song to my incredible girlfriend at the peak of our 3-year relationship. It described our relationship perfectly and we both treasured this song, having many sentimental ties. Since then we have dissolved as a "couple," though we are still close and love each other very much. The greatest part about this song is it still applys and describes us so well and always will.

that is soo sweet, i wish that something sweet like that would happen to me, but no, that would never happen, it'd be too good for me and then i might be happy and that would just be wrong!

I recorded a verision of me singing this song and placed it in my mothers casket at her funeral. It's about the cycle of life and death, and how things come full circle. Even the instrumental break sounds like a funeral march. Has Billy Joel's mother died? Has he ever commented on the meaning of this song? Anyway, that's what it means to me.

I can't hear this song without getting teary eyed. It was really great to hear it performed live. It was written for his daughter and he usually doesn't perform it because it's so personal to him.

he wrote it to his daughter when he and christie brinkley were having marriage problems, and soon divorced. he wanted his daughter to know that although they would be divorced he would still always be there for her.

such a beautiful song... my music teacher played this for the class today in school and I started tearing up. It just really reminded me of my dad and how our relationship will never be the same since my parents divorced when I was 7. Yes, he did write this for his daughter after she asked him if she'll ever get to see him again.... can you believe that? A girl just 4 years of age asking something like that. That would have put my heart in so many knots. He also wrote "The River Of Dreams" for her after she asked him what happens when we die. I don't care how tuff you are, whether you're a football player, wrestler, or whatever, you have to admit that this song touches you in someway. Hell, I listen to KoRn (hence my name), NIN, Disturbed etc... and I still love this song. I was thinking a bit while I was listening to it, and I decided I want this to be my wedding song for me and my father to dance to when I get married.

I love that section of the first verse

I think I know what you've been asking me
I think you know what I've been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Wherever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away

My highschool show choir sang this song for about five straight years, and I got so sick of it that I didn't understand any of the lyrics. I read them though a while back in a fit of nostalgia, and they really are quite beautiful. To complete the genereal sappiness of this posting I would have to bring in a failed relationship, but I think I will spare you. Billy Joel is a very gifted writer. Even things taken out of context are meaningful in his songs

In my opinion, every artist writes their "great love song," so to speak. Elton John had Tiny Dancer, CCR had Suzie Q, Clapton had Layla. For Billy Joel, it was either this gem of a song, or his classic You're My Home. Both songs are full of emotion and love, which display the devotion that Billy always puts into his music.

We sang this song in my highschool chorus and we had so many people tearing up because we had just lost some students in a car crash and so many of us thought of them while singing this. It was an incredible moment for everyone. I've always loved this song and I always will.

When my wife and I separated in 2004 and she took our daughter away with her, I heard this song in the car driving home from one of my visits with my daughter. I immediately teared up because of the beautiful sentiment that it shares. What a personal feeling Billy Joel is sharing with the world in this song. Shortly after hearing it, I added it as the background music on a website that I have for my daughter. Everytime I listen to it I am reminded that even if I do not see my daughter every day, that she is always in my heart - and I am in hers. So long as we love each other we will always be together.

All of the stories people mention about hearing this song are heartwrenching. A song has to be brilliant to do that.

It means a lot to me - of the relationship i never had with my father, mainly. I cry whenever i hear it.
