Lyrics for Minority as interpreted by bonj

Minority Lyrics
I wanna be the minority
I don't need you, authority
Down with the moral majority
'Cause I wanna be the minority

I pledge allegiance to the underworld
One nation under "dog," there of which I stand alone
A face in the crowd; unsung, against the mold
Without a doubt, singled-out, the only way I know!

'Cause I wanna be the minority
I don't need you, authority
Down with the moral majority
'Cause I wanna be the minority

Stepped out of the line, like a sheep runs from the herd
Marching out of time, to my own beat now
The only way I know

One light, one mind flashing in the dark
Blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts
"For cryin' out loud," she screams unto me
A free-for-all, fuck 'em all, "you are your own sight"

'Cause I wanna be the minority
I don't need you, authority
Down with the moral majority
'Cause I wanna be the minority
Hey!

One light, one mind flashing in the dark
Blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts
"For cryin' out loud," she screams unto me
A free-for-all, fuck 'em all, "you are your own sight"

'Cause I wanna be the minority
I don't need you, authority
Down with the moral majority
'Cause I wanna be the minority
(I wanna be) the minority
(I wanna be) the minority
(I wanna be) the minority
(I wanna be) the minority

i agree with idungotnosn. everyone tries to be different and tries to be a minority but they all get caught up in thier own game forget what they were trying to be different from and wind up just being the same as everyone else. i guess what i am trying to say is dont try to be different and fit in to your own label you will just wind up forgetting who the real you is. and these days being yourself is what makes you different, because everyone is a FAKE.

This song, to me, sounded more like satire. It's like he sings about being a "minority" and how stupid the whole idea of trying to be different than everyone else. There are some people who try to identify themselves away from the rest of the crowd by wearing different clothing or wearing stupid insignias.

For example, I saw this one patch sown onto some "punk's" backpack that said "down with commercialism." The whole thing contradicted itself; when that punk bought that patch, she was conforming to commercialism.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, "punk" is no different than any other label. You're not finding yourself when you're being a punk, you're no different than any other punk, and you should stop saying we're conformists because you're conforming to a "punk society." There. I said it.

The lyrics aren't exactly rocket science, the song is basically about being rebellious and not following the crowd.

Now let us all laugh at "preps" for being conformists... while wearing our new Green Day t-shirts from Hot Topic, as advertised on MTV.

~Stepped out of the line/ like a sheep runs from the herd - love that line, its such a great analogy for independance. greenday are great, and the whole message of this song is cool. Although you have to wonder, in trying to be the minority, are people not making themselves the majority?
but seriously this song is great!~

I have pledged allegance to the underworld!
maaaan, wat can I say? this song FUCKING RULES!!!!
that does not even begin to describe it.
my fave bit is \"One light, one mind flashing in the dark
Blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts
\"For cryin\' out loud,\" she screams unto me
A free-for-all, fuck \'em all, \"you are your own sight\"\"

the part \'marching out of time to my own beat now\' describes me best though; it gives me this funny mental pic of lotsa army people marching, and then me by the side doing the hula dance while wearing biig baggy purple trousers and a green day t shirt.
funny stuff...

OK I just want to say that this song kicks some major ass. And I really like the line "Blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts" I don't even know why, but anyway getting back on topic here. This song is pretty much about not caring what other people think, being your own person, and just saying FUCK EM ALL!! I wanna be who I wanna be!!! It's a good song that I think everyone should listen to.

I like this song also. It does mean to be yourself. But on another note, dont change who you are and pretend to like stuff that no one else likes and hate what everyone else likes, just to be different.

Hell yeah! This is a classic punk anthem, all about doing what you want, being unique and disobeying authority. I saw Green Day live about month ago and they played this and it was absolutely fuckin' awesome!

ok green day FREAK and jsiscool: there's a reason it's not underdog. they wanted to emphasize the pun on "under god". dog=god; irreverence - punk. and the moral majority is a political reference the Moral Majority Coalition, a right wing fundamentalist group led by the one and only Rev. Jerry Falwell that ConserviNazi bastard.

i reckon this song has the same sort of meaning, as blink 182 "give me one good reason" and all the other "punk" bands "anthems" example, blink 182, good charlotte. Yet none of these done it with such originality, "minority", i mean they could have called it "the anthem" like other bands do, but being green day, they came out with a totally original song, with an original title, and some lyrics that a lot of people can relate to! i mean, you have to be an amazing songwriter to make something so original, i know they probably done the whole "i don't care" thing before all the other bands caught on, but , still fantastic songwriting none the less, i've always thought billie joe was an amazing songwriter, and this just backs it up!
