[Chorus]
I want to be the minority
I don't need your authority
Down with the moral majority
Cause I want to be the minority

I pledge allegiance to the underworld
One nation under dog
There of which I stand alone
A face in the crowd
Unsung, against the mold
Without a doubt,
Singled out
The only way I know

[Chorus]

Stepped out of the line
Like a sheep runs from the herd
Marching out of time
To my own beat now
The only way I know
One light, one mind
Flashing in the dark
Blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts
"For crying out loud" she screamed unto me
A free for all
Fuck 'em all
"You're on your own side"

[Chorus]

One light, one mind
Flashing in the dark
Blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts
"For crying out loud" she screamed unto me
A free for all
Fuck 'em all
"You're on your own side"

[Chorus]

General Comment:My old roommate and I were going somewhere and this song was on he asked my why anyone would want to be in the minority. I explained my case and he still said he would never want to be in the minority. that was part of the reason I didnt live with him after the lease was up.

Also someone might have mentioned this already but the use of a sheep in the song brings to mind people who just follow. The whole shepard flock thing. He doesnt want to be a sheep

General Comment:"Down with the moral majority",
the Moral Majority was actually a political group in the US that was in existence from 1978-1989. I don't know much about it, but it was a religious group, maybe even a cult. What Billie Joe has against it I'm not sure.
Anyway, the song itself is great, must be about being yourself and not worrying about what people think of you or who they want you to be, just be yourself.

General Comment:I love Green Day soooooooooooooo much!
whenever I feel helplessly lonely I only listen to them and especially this album cause I find it very familiar and comforting.

Yeah, I think MattWoz could definitely be right about that...

    GO GREEN DAY!!

General Comment:This song is only superficially about doing your own thing; the deeper meaning is a deep-seated complaint about religion, and in particular Conservative Christians. It's perfectly obvious in lines like "One nation under Dog" (as opposed to God), "Down with the Moral Majority" (referring to the political movement founded by Jerry Falwell, eventually culminating in Reagan's election to president: Quoting wikipedia: The intent of the organization is to continue the "evangelical revolution" to help conservative politicians get elected.), and just as unsubtly in lines like "Stepped out of the line, like a sheep runs from the herd" (continuing the metaphor of Jesus as the shepherd, and exalting the few "sheep" with the courage to walk away). Like most of the songs on "American Idiot", "Minority" is a political protest song against the Conservative Christians who never fail to believe that every American who doesn't believe the same things as they do is an anti-American "Terrorist in disguise".

General Comment:Okay rebellion, cool. "...She screams unto me..." Who is "She?" Perhaps simply a girlfriend? But that seems out of context. Majority... Maybe the statue of liberty? Definatly a symbol of majority... IDK

General Comment:I noticed some confusion about the line "Down with the moral majority" It means bring down the moral majority. Be yourself and others will see how much better it is. The "Moral Majority" will be undone from the inside out! A big fuCKYou to them. (Sorry for the CKY reference in a green day song thingy...)
