Lyrics for Minority as interpreted by bonj

Minority Lyrics
I wanna be the minority
I don't need you, authority
Down with the moral majority
'Cause I wanna be the minority

I pledge allegiance to the underworld
One nation under "dog," there of which I stand alone
A face in the crowd; unsung, against the mold
Without a doubt, singled-out, the only way I know!

'Cause I wanna be the minority
I don't need you, authority
Down with the moral majority
'Cause I wanna be the minority

Stepped out of the line, like a sheep runs from the herd
Marching out of time, to my own beat now
The only way I know

One light, one mind flashing in the dark
Blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts
"For cryin' out loud," she screams unto me
A free-for-all, fuck 'em all, "you are your own sight"

'Cause I wanna be the minority
I don't need you, authority
Down with the moral majority
'Cause I wanna be the minority
Hey!

One light, one mind flashing in the dark
Blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts
"For cryin' out loud," she screams unto me
A free-for-all, fuck 'em all, "you are your own sight"

'Cause I wanna be the minority
I don't need you, authority
Down with the moral majority
'Cause I wanna be the minority
(I wanna be) the minority
(I wanna be) the minority
(I wanna be) the minority
(I wanna be) the minority

The lyrics aren't exactly rocket science, the song is basically about being rebellious and not following the crowd.

Now let us all laugh at "preps" for being conformists... while wearing our new Green Day t-shirts from Hot Topic, as advertised on MTV.

This song, to me, sounded more like satire. It's like he sings about being a "minority" and how stupid the whole idea of trying to be different than everyone else. There are some people who try to identify themselves away from the rest of the crowd by wearing different clothing or wearing stupid insignias.

For example, I saw this one patch sown onto some "punk's" backpack that said "down with commercialism." The whole thing contradicted itself; when that punk bought that patch, she was conforming to commercialism.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, "punk" is no different than any other label. You're not finding yourself when you're being a punk, you're no different than any other punk, and you should stop saying we're conformists because you're conforming to a "punk society." There. I said it.

i agree with idungotnosn. everyone tries to be different and tries to be a minority but they all get caught up in thier own game forget what they were trying to be different from and wind up just being the same as everyone else. i guess what i am trying to say is dont try to be different and fit in to your own label you will just wind up forgetting who the real you is. and these days being yourself is what makes you different, because everyone is a FAKE.

I love this song. Yes. It's about being a punk and a rebel and rebelling against society and the conformists. But the rebel thing is so overplayed that being yourself is now conforming....Ptehhhh

Yeah this a good song. It's great to hear decent punk these days. I like songs like this. I often end up being in the minority I like far left politics and always get into arguements about it and wear my punk badges on my blazer at school, It really annoys my maths teacher. I love the punk image I like the hats and torn suits great stuff. Also idungotnosn how do you know the guy didn't make the patch himself, just thought I'ld pop that question off.

I just love this song. It was one of the first green day songs I listened to (Which was a few months AFTER American Idiot came out x3) and I was like -This song reminds me of me!- Except if I was shipped to Tokyo I'd be common as the sky is blue, except for the olde english obsession, theory that I was a kitten in my past laugh (I drowned...), weird name obsession... The list goes on, but then I'm just freaky, not a minority ^^;

i don't know why, but everytime i listen to this song, it makes me feel better! maybe it's cuz of the rebeliousness that get's me all excited...or maybe it's the spark of "who cares" attitude...i dunno! i do love this song!

the so-called minorities are never really the minorities. whites like to think of themselves as the majority but in fact the vast majority of people in this world are not white. yet, they're still classified as "different" by white people and the media. there are hardly anyone out there, let alone a majority of people, who fit the idealized, racist, homophobic standards that are passed off as "normal".

The chorus is very self-explanatory and straight forward, then the rest of the verses are very metaphorical and poetic. A very good combination, I must say. Too bad more people don't live by this song instead of being one rap-loving, MTV-worshipping, preppy, Abercrombie-loving blob. Dear God, help me from this shit around me. *sigh* But anyway... yes, kickass song. Sounds absolutely AMAZING live with everyone singing along... wow. Then again, all their songs sound amazing live... maybe better than the actual recordings for the album.

I agree with what luv_u_not said before. It does just seem to spark something in you; like that "I can take on the world" sort of vibe. That's what Green Day can do for ya. ;)

I agree. this song makes me wanna be myself too.

and I like what distortedsilence wrote. it reminds me on myself. a guy from my class called me "black sheep" once but I didnt mind. I'm used to all that stupid names and teasing and I dont give a fuck anymore. green day have really contributed to my self-confidence and I'm so thankful to them for it (i dont think i wrote this very well but i hope you'll understand)

anyways, all I wanna say is: I wanna be the minority! and I AM the minority!
