Lyrics for Minority as interpreted by bonj

Minority Lyrics
I wanna be the minority
I don't need you, authority
Down with the moral majority
'Cause I wanna be the minority

I pledge allegiance to the underworld
One nation under "dog," there of which I stand alone
A face in the crowd; unsung, against the mold
Without a doubt, singled-out, the only way I know!

'Cause I wanna be the minority
I don't need you, authority
Down with the moral majority
'Cause I wanna be the minority

Stepped out of the line, like a sheep runs from the herd
Marching out of time, to my own beat now
The only way I know

One light, one mind flashing in the dark
Blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts
"For cryin' out loud," she screams unto me
A free-for-all, fuck 'em all, "you are your own sight"

'Cause I wanna be the minority
I don't need you, authority
Down with the moral majority
'Cause I wanna be the minority
Hey!

One light, one mind flashing in the dark
Blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts
"For cryin' out loud," she screams unto me
A free-for-all, fuck 'em all, "you are your own sight"

'Cause I wanna be the minority
I don't need you, authority
Down with the moral majority
'Cause I wanna be the minority
(I wanna be) the minority
(I wanna be) the minority
(I wanna be) the minority
(I wanna be) the minority

My old roommate and I were going somewhere and this song was on he asked my why anyone would want to be in the minority. I explained my case and he still said he would never want to be in the minority. that was part of the reason I didnt live with him after the lease was up.

Also someone might have mentioned this already but the use of a sheep in the song brings to mind people who just follow. The whole shepard flock thing. He doesnt want to be a sheep

he wants to be different and he doesn't care what everyone else does or says. He's gonna do what he wants and go against the crowd.

"Down with the moral majority",
the Moral Majority was actually a political group in the US that was in existence from 1978-1989. I don't know much about it, but it was a religious group, maybe even a cult. What Billie Joe has against it I'm not sure.
Anyway, the song itself is great, must be about being yourself and not worrying about what people think of you or who they want you to be, just be yourself.

I love Green Day soooooooooooooo much!
whenever I feel helplessly lonely I only listen to them and especially this album cause I find it very familiar and comforting.

Yeah, I think MattWoz could definitely be right about that...

GO GREEN DAY!!

This song is only superficially about doing your own thing; the deeper meaning is a deep-seated complaint about religion, and in particular Conservative Christians. It's perfectly obvious in lines like "One nation under Dog" (as opposed to God), "Down with the Moral Majority" (referring to the political movement founded by Jerry Falwell, eventually culminating in Reagan's election to president: Quoting wikipedia: The intent of the organization is to continue the "evangelical revolution" to help conservative politicians get elected.), and just as unsubtly in lines like "Stepped out of the line, like a sheep runs from the herd" (continuing the metaphor of Jesus as the shepherd, and exalting the few "sheep" with the courage to walk away). Like most of the songs on "American Idiot", "Minority" is a political protest song against the Conservative Christians who never fail to believe that every American who doesn't believe the same things as they do is an anti-American "Terrorist in disguise".

Okay rebellion, cool. "...She screams unto me..." Who is "She?" Perhaps simply a girlfriend? But that seems out of context. Majority... Maybe the statue of liberty? Definatly a symbol of majority... IDK

I noticed some confusion about the line "Down with the moral majority" It means bring down the moral majority. Be yourself and others will see how much better it is. The "Moral Majority" will be undone from the inside out! A big fuCKYou to them. (Sorry for the CKY reference in a green day song thingy...)

i think this song is making fun of people who think that they're better than someone else because of their race or culture. "One light, one mind flashing in the dark/ Blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts" i think that one light, one mind means that we all are similar, not in the sense that everyone is the same, but that everyone is created equal, and we all deserve the same, good treatment. blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts means that the whole concept of being created equal was never respected to begin with and its prevented by being respected because the people that are getting hurt by prejudices are not speaking out when they get hurt.

This song is great,
but just to clear up what the "moral majority" is...
It was a group of conservative christians who basically thought they weren't getting enough political voice, so they started making schools teach sciences other than evolution, etc.
And yes, they do try to "help" with the MPAA ratings on movies and games and stuff.
But yes, Greenday is anti moral majority, although it broke off in 1989.
Just thought I'd put some facts out there ^^b

Oh, P.S. guys... It's "I don't need YOUR AUTHORITY", not you authority. And it means that i don't need your permission to be different or have my own opinion. It doesn't have anything to do with the police monkey man. Srry to burst your bubble.

I LOVE THIS SONG! i never gave a crap what anyone thought of me, and when i start to doubt myself and think "Maybe ther opinion is right after all..." i think of this song and think "Screw you! My opinion is my opinion, meaning it's right in my mind!". i hate it when people think ther opinion is the only AND the right opinion. it pisses me off. But Green Day, they are all GENIUSES!!! I want to be like them, outspoken, tough, a get-off-my-back screw-you attitude, while still payin attention to the issues. GREEN DAY WILL LIVE ON FOREVER!!!!!!!!

Everybody, every single person is the minority because of how it is. There is nobody else like you! You leave your own mark no matter if emboldens human nature against the grain or it emboldens the status quo. You are your own minority and be proud of that fact!!!
