In pitch dark
I go walking in your landscape
Broken branches
Trip me as I speak

Just 'cause you feel it
Doesn't mean it's there
Just 'cause you feel it
Doesn't mean it's there

There's always a siren
Singing you to shipwreck
(Don't reach out, don't reach out
Don't reach out, don't reach out)
Steer away from each rocks
We'd be a walking disaster
(Don't reach out, don't reach out
Don't reach out, don't reach out)

Just 'cause you feel it
Doesn't mean it's there
(Someone on your shoulder
Someone on your shoulder)
Just 'cause you feel it
Doesn't mean it's there
(Someone on your shoulder
Someone on your shoulder)
There there!

Why so green and lonely?
Lonely, lonely?

Heaven sent you to me
To me, to me?

We are accidents waiting
Waiting to happen

We are accidents waiting
Waiting to happen

My Interpretation:Of course this could be stupid but I have always thought this song is a warning about love, meaning you can fall in love with a person but they could not feel the same way about you

    'Just 'cause you feel it
Doesn't mean it's there ' Meaning just cause you have deep feelings for someone, does not necessarily mean it is true love

The first verse 'in pitch dark' could represent the darkness you feel when single, trying to find your soul-mate, and goes 'walking in your landscape', whereupon he finds a woman. 'broken branches, trip me as I speak', implies he was hurrying and desperate to find his true love.

In the second verse he uses another metaphor for single-life as travelling the ocean, in search of the 'one', and warns not to be lured in by flirtatious women ' There's always a siren
Singing you to shipwreck' and you should steer clear of these people otherwise it would be a 'walking disaster.'

The '(there's someone on your shoulder)' could mean that there's always someone there to help you with relationship problems, almost like a guardian, so as to never to be afraid to ask for help.

'Why so green and lonely?' could be a response to the person who he is warning. Why are they so 'green' about not being in a relationship, and the 'Lonely, lonely?' bit could be questioning are you really lonely (e.g. you still have friends and family).

Then he mimics how someone could be so sure that this person was the 'one':
    'Heaven sent you to me
To me, to me?' The question mark at the end implies the sudden realization that they weren't really the 'one' .

    'We are accidents waiting
Waiting to happen' suggests that this love 'disaster' was destined to happen.

Lastly, the song is called 'There, there', which is what you say to comfort an upset person, who is this context is upset about love.

Of course '(The Boney King of Nowhere)' has me stumped a bit

    all in all, great song

General Comment:Just a universal cry of how anxiety and doubt colonize relationships & keep us from taking care of those we love, like a father who can't even believe words of comfort he says to his own baby. Here we see the personal side of the Thief album's observations on an era of terror in a wider social, economic, political context- fear, the "thief" of the album title, makes us feel powerless and divides us. When we surrender to the "thief" and his sirens, we hurt, we can't love each other.

General Comment:I'll break this down for you pedestrians.

This song is about a dude who is courting a woman with whom he shouldn't - for Americans he wants to hit that.

The first phrase is a literary reference to which is of no consequence; however, it refers to a man "falling" for a woman as he often thinks about her at night as it were.

The next phrase is another literary reference this time from Homer - of which I'm sure you are all aware, even the americans. It represents a temptation; giving in will lead to bad consequences.

    "Don't reach out." Self-explanatory

The next phrase - he knows what he is feeling is transitory (someone on your shoulder means his logic/conscience - while the temptation would be the other shoulder).

Green is an unfrequently used term to mean feelings of lasciviousness (or horny for americans).

Heaven sent you to me and we are accidents waiting to happen - imply he made up his mind and it is going to happen.

Song Meaning:Two words for you: 'Blind Faith'....okay, more than two words:

This song clearly addresses the concept of going strictly off of blind faith and emotions to guide you through life as it relates to religious or personal beliefs. I agree it could be interpreted in other ways too and even more specific ways as many song can be; which is fine. However, songs are quite often written about fairly general and widely thought about topics such as love and religion or the meaning of life (these being some of the most written about topics. In terms of this topic, many people base their beliefs entirely on a “good feeling” they get about something after they've thought or prayed about it a lot, and nothing else; hence, blind faith. This is usually backed up by some sort of bias; as in a desire for it to be right, or true. Additionally, there is a general notion throughout the song of cautioning against this method of decision making. Think about this concept as you read through the lyrics again and I'm sure a light bulb with go off in your head!

    Let me break it down:

“In pitch dark I go walking in your landscape”: This is someone walking blindly in a world they have built up in their head.

“Broken branches trip me as I speak”: The problem of being “tripped up” as the person constantly tries to speak for and justify their fantasy world as it continually clashes with reality; being that it's based on nothing but there own bias and belief.

“Just 'cause you feel it, doesn't mean it's there”: Simply stating that, just because the person wants it to be true and has a good feeling about it in their heart, doesn't necessarily mean that's the way it is or that it's true.

“There's always a siren singing you to shipwreck”: This is talking about whatever is fueling or driving the person's desire for their belief to be true. The “siren” representing something beautiful or attractive about their belief drawing them to like it and hold to it. And the “shipwreck” representing the deception that often accompanies the “siren” or beautiful idea.

“Steer away from the rocks, we'd be a walking disaster.....Don't reach out”: Again, just a warning to avoid this sort of thing as it will most likely lead to disaster.

“Someone on your shoulder...just 'cause you feel it, doesn't mean it's there”: This possibly referring a “little companion helping to guide the person through this path of blindness; whether that's their own thoughts or bias or feelings or whatever. Basically it's just them convincing themselves in one way or another. And again, 'just 'cause you feel it, doesn't mean it's there' or real.

“Why so green and lonely?”: Not sure about this part other than, maybe just a sense of loneliness with the false notions.

“Heaven sent you to me, to me?”: This line being posed as a question may be signifying a sense of doubt in the individual concerning their reasoning's and belief's. If it's not posed as a question, then maybe just a feeling that their beliefs come from something divine.

“We are accidents waiting to happen”: I think this is simply Tom York stating that we, as humans with tendencies to reason in this way, are accidents waiting to happen.

Even if I'm wrong about it specifically being about religion/belief's, I think it would still be the same concept, just referring to something other than religion or belief's. But this makes the most sense and would be most typical.

General Comment:The biggest reason I think this is about religious belief is because of the other song titles. Codex, give up the ghost, lotus flower. Also Tom York does give some clues to the meaning behind the trees. "strange, multi-limbed creatures that are neither malevolent or benevolent, they're simply there, part of the living spirit of the forest." Much like our different beliefs. When he puts on the suit, in the video, people start to believe things about him and he becomes one of the trees in our forest of weird beliefs.

General Comment:another breakup song? First verse being the start of the end, failing to comunicate with each other, being distant and tripping up on misunterstanding. Then the chorus simply describes the feeling of love you want to believe is there at the start of any important relationship.

Next verse warnes how easy it is to fall into these imperfect relationships 'there's always a siren singing you to shipwreck'. 'We'd be a walking disaster' explains the state you'd be in when the relationship falls apart. 'Acidents waiting to happen' again means they were never right for each other and the end was inevitable.

My Interpretation:I reckon it's about being tempted to cheat with someone he doesn't really know but has that initial feeling of love (which is really lust or infatuation.)

"In pitch dark I go walking in your landscape" - I don't know you well but we are spending (innocent, walking) time together. The broken branches thing could be parts of her "landscape" that aren't perfect, but he's not really paying attention to.

"just cause you feel it - doesn't mean it's there" - that feeling of "me and this (new) person have a special connection" (which isn't really there.)

Obviously the Siren relates to Odysseus and temptation - "we'd be a walking disaster" - moment of clarity from young Thom. He's telling her (not himself) to "not reach out" because he doesn't feel strong. (I don't know him, I'm just guessing..)

I agree with previous poster who said the "someone on shoulder" is an angel / devil.

Accidents waiting to happen - inevitable. He's gonna do the dirty on his missus. Shame on you Thom Yorke, at least in my interpretation!

General Comment:I think it's simple... I sense the issue being described here is temptation which continually leads two lovers astray from one another. It's always something which throws them off course. Really, I think that's it. This love is fleeting.
