Lyrics for Walking By as interpreted by LittleNemo

Walking By Lyrics
Your grand dad left home for the circus
He was young just like me,
with hope to explore
He married a girl in Virginia
She could swing the trapeze,
they could sleep on the floor

Your mother was born in December,
on the one sunny day that winter gave up
With warm summer eyes that flickered like fireflies,
and she stared at the world

So why do you leave these stories unfinished,
my Cheshire cat doorstop with tears in your eyes?
And why do you look when you've already found it?
And what did you find that would leave you walking by?

She was raised in a New England village
Then she moved to LA with her firefly stare,
and you loved sunset strip when it sparkled
You grew up and you sparkled, but why don't you care?

And why do you leave these stories unfinished,
my Cheshire cat doorstop with tears in your eyes?
And why do you look when you've already found me?
And what did you find that would leave you walking by?

And these nights I get high just from breathing
When I lie here with you I'm sure that I'm real
like that firework over the freeway
I could stay here all day but that's not how you feel

So why do you leave these questions unanswered?
The circus awaits and you're already gone
My Cheshire cat doorstop with fear in your smile,
what makes it so easy for you to be walking by?
And what did I do that you can't seem to want me?
And why do we lie here and whisper goodbyes?
Where can I go that your pictures won't haunt me?
What makes it so easy for you to be walking by?
Walking by

i thoughtthis song was about someone leaving someone and the the other left wondering what they did to change things, she's only herself "whay do you leave when you've already found me....?"

Like just about everyone else who's posted, I find myself almost nearing tears whenever I hear this song (and I don't cry: that's as close as I get). You want to know something creepy? Whenever I hear it, depending on maybe the verse or even the time of day, I flip-flop between being convinced that this song is about my parents, who are...it's not so easy right now, and my boyfriend-turned-ex-turned-great-friend. Kinda creeps me out.

Love the song, though. Right now, it's a tie between this, Cavanaugh Park, and Ruthless for number one. Oh damn. And Konstantine. And Babies of the Eighties...and...crap.

I love these guys. How's that/

Blegh. Sorry. I'm a spaz.

Also, to add to my schizo interpretation of the song, my mother's parents were from the south (not Virginia, though...), and she was born in December. But I've never been to LA. Pity.

There is only one other song that I know of that affects me in such a way, it's like a mournful heartfelt feeling, like I'm absorbed in the song. Andrew's singing is so expressive and his voice is just beautiful! I've listened to this song so much, I play it over and over and I just can't get enough of that feeling. The harmonies on violin and cello are so amazing and only add to the whole emotive feel of the song. I can't understand why people can dislike this, although to fully understand and feel it you have to have it really loud and listne to it properly!

I think the "Cheshire Cat doorstop" thing is reference to their relationship. Like, in Alice in Wonderland, the Cheshire Cat disappears and reappears all the time, and I guess that's how it is with the doorstop - when it's there, the door is open, but when it disappears, the door closes, and that's how their relationship is.

I think this is similar to what he was going through with his girlfriend when he left to tour. The realtionship never ended but because he was always on the road he couldn't see her very often, and I agree that the chesire cat is that coming and going and that fake smile that they have each time it happens. I think the line "why do you leave these stories unfinished"/"leave these questions unanswered" speaks to the idea that it never ended but it isn't a full relationship. He obviously loves her but she never finished the story (presumable of her life) but the idea that he wanted to know everything about her; however; she left before she finished the story or answered al of his questions.

I've loved this song for as long as I can remember, me and some friends from school put an ensemble together to perform to a school in Britain while we were visiting there. They'd never heard of SoCo and were totally blown away by it. Of course our perfomance was nothing compared to the real thing but it still felt amazing playing those 4 notes that build up at the start of the chorus. Just.... awesome.

I love this song. It seriously does make me cry, I mean can I get anymore emo I swear. This part: what makes it so easy for you to be walking by?

Where can I go that your pictures won't haunt me?
What makes it so easy for you to be walking by?
Walking by always makes me cry.... like it never ceases to fail... I just can relate to it so much. Than again, I can do that with just about any SoCo song... doesn't matter. There lryics are just sooo amazing!

i know it's supposed to be about his ex but i always picture a father, maybe a younger dad, standing on the boardwalk with his little girl and telling her about her mother and what she was like when she was younger. a little girl that looks exactly like her mother. just kind of gazing off into the ocean and explaining everything that had happened before her, before she was even around. truly beautiful.

i always pick out the phrases or words that stick out in my head after i hear a song. but with this one, there's too many to pick just one. cheshire cat doorstop, firefly stare, you grew up and you sparkled, high just from breathing.

too beautiful to explain through words.

My favorite part is when he sings:
''She could swing the trapeze,
they could sleep on the floor''
I don't know why but that part just makes me really emotional
