Lyrics for Piano Man as interpreted by kevin

Piano Man Lyrics
It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Makin' love to his tonic and gin

He says, "Son, can you play me a memory?
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes"

La la la, de de da
La la, de de da da da

Chorus:
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright

Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be
He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me."
As the smile ran away from his face
"Well I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"

Oh, la la la, de de da
La la, de de da da da

Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talkin' with Davy who's still in the navy
And probably will be for life

And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinkin' alone

Chorus

It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been comin' to see
To forget about life for a while
And the piano, it sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say, "Man, what are you doin' here?"

Oh, la la la, de de da
La la, de de da da da

Chorus

my friend was in a bar one night, bar was practically empty, and some guy came in and started playing "Piano Man" on the piano. when he went over to compliment the guy on his playing, he realized it was actually Billy Joel himself!

The first time I heard this song, I cried. Memories flooded back, and I wished I had my own Piano Man.

does anyone know what this song is really about? at the beginning of his carreer Billy Joel got screwed over by a record label on an awful contract and couldn't release any of his songs and he couldn't work in any large music business because of the contract so until it expired he had to work at a small bar. this song is his experiences at the bar.

One of the best impromptu sing-a-long songs of all times. You can play this on the jukebox all over this country, and chances are there will be many people singin along.

Well, I know the guy, and he does not like this song at all. Since it came out, it's been his identifying song, and it's been played so much that it doesn't feel like he wrote it anymore. Nonetheless, it's an amazing song.

I agree with Hoju. I may not know him, but if I were a star who was famous for pretty much this one song (which is marvelous) I would hate it also. So... anyone know where I can get the music??

This song is actually based on real events that happened while billy joel was playing at small piano bars or bars in general while he was getting screwed over with a contract, just like joeyfox1 send. THe people in the song real and everythign about them real and the waitress who is practicing politics is his first ex wife.

I love this song.

To me it's about getting stuck in a life you won't want to lead. Having potential and maybe if your situation was different you'd become something bigger, but you see other people where you want to be, just as unhappy.

This song is quite a literal song really. The meaning is exactly what is written...

However, did anyone ever notice that Paul and Davey are most likely gay? Paul has "never had time for a wife", and Davey will probably be in the navy for life..The Navy is often associated with homosexuality (no offence to either gays, or anyone in the navy)
