Lyrics for Beautiful Day as interpreted by kevin

Beautiful Day Lyrics
The heart is a bloom,
Shoots up through the stony ground
But there's no room,
No space to rent in this town

You're out of luck
And the reason that you had to care,
The traffic is stuck
And you're not moving anywhere.

You thought you'd found a friend
To take you out of this place
Someone you can lend a hand
In return for grace
It's a beautiful day
The sky falls
And you feel like it's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away

You're on the road
But you've got no destination
You're in the mud
In the maze of her imagination

You love this town
Even if it doesn't ring true
You've been all over
And it's been all over you

It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
It's a beautiful day

Touch me, Take me to that other place
Teach me, I know I'm not a hopeless case

See the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
See the bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light, and
See the bird with the leaf in her mouth
After the flood, all the colors came out

It was a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
Beautiful day

Touch me, take me to that other place
Reach me, I know I'm not a hopeless case

What you don't have you don't need it now
What you don't know you can feel it somehow
What you don't have you don't need it now
Don't need it now
Was a beautiful day.

I love this song, I always listen to it every day as I start out my run, b/c sometimes, even though I might not want to run, when I get out there and pop in my U2 mix and this song comes on, I realize how happy I am to be out enjoying nature, even if it's raining or snowing or 110 out, it's a Beautiful Day, and God made it special.

This song always cheers me up. It gives me hope. Bono is a genius. I love U2 and I'm happy they've sticked around for so long, you don't [actually I don't think I've ever] see that.

found this on the web...

"The song encourages us to focus on the good in life. “It’s a beautiful day/ Don’t let it get away… Touch me, take me to that other place/ Teach me, I know I’m not a hopeless case.” Bono also introduces images of hope. One that is particularly noteworthy is that of “the bird with a leaf in her mouth” followed by “after the flood all the colors came out.” This is referring to the time when God destroyed the earth by flood. When Noah sent out a dove and it returned with a leaf in its mouth, he knew there was dry ground and new life. God gave the rainbow as a sign that he would never again destroy the entire earth with a flood. (Genesis 8-9). Hence the rainbow, as God intended, is a sign of hope and regeneration. "

The song's meaning becomes clearer for me when Bono sings it live. On the Elevation DVD, he adds one word that makes all the difference: "Touch me. Take me to that other place. Teach me - Lord - I know I'm not a hopeless case". That part is definitely a prayer.

You want to know what this song is about? I'll tell you what this song is about. It's about a person who has nothing. He hasn't got a house "no space to rent in this town" he hasn't got any friends "you thought you found a friend" he has no desires or goals "you've got no destination" "you're out of luck" and when the "sky falls" that's it, he has hit rock bottom, he has nothing and it is then and only then that this man can actually see how beautiful the day really is. And then we reach the Bridge and Bono explains all the beauty in the world that goes unnoticed.
So basically Bono is sending out the message that people are too focused on the wrong things in life. And only when you have lost everything and have nothing else but the beauty of the world to focus on you then become truely happy, because you understand what really matters.

P.S. Anyone who bad mouths this song, Bono and his crew or any of his other songs will find themselves in the pits of hell soon enough.

i love the flood references in this song, what this song means to me is when everything is going wrong just realizing how lucky we are to have another day to live... every day really can be a beautiful day if you want it to.

Bono has said in a couple of interviews what this song is about. Its about this friend of his who worked at his computer all his life and hardly ever went outside or met people. Then, he was diagnosed with Cancer and given something like six months to live. He decided to quit his job and go outside and see the world and meet people, and possibly even became more spiritual. Amazingly, the doctors cured him and he never went back to a computer again. I suppose the beautiful day is about the day he first left his computer to go outside. Incidentally this song and the album or no where near as good as the older stuff in the late 80's/early 90's. Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum and Achtung Baby are still their three best albums.

Along the same lines as some of what I'm reading,
Bono said this song was about someone who had lost it all....and couldn't be happier.

This could be the man at the computer, or maybe Christ, as he wakes up in a stable in Bethlehem.
It is a striking image indeed.

Spanish eyes...that phrase pops up quite a lot doesn't it?

Gosh I really, really, really love this song. It is so full of meaning and I agree with Idi...it feels so good to listen to it when you're gloomy and when you get up and you've got school. I never used to like U2 that much before, but now I do, a lot. =)
