I hear the ticking of the clock
I'm lying here the room's pitch dark
I wonder where you are tonight
No answer on the telephone
And the night goes by so very slow
Oh I hope that it won't end though
Alone

Till now I always got by on my own
I never really cared until I met you
And now it chills me to the bone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone

You don't know how long I have wanted
To touch your lips and hold you tight, oh
You don't know how long I have waited
And I was going to tell you tonight
But the secret is still my own
And my love for you is still unknown
Alone

Till now I always got by on my own
I never really cared until I met you
And now it chills me to the bone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone

How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone

Alone, alone

My Interpretation:The way other people felt about this song, might be true. Obviously like …… said we don't know what the writer thought when its originally written. Here's my two pence:
The person likes solidarity and embrace of being alone. All her thoughts and daydreaming is just something that she only cater for. If someone comes into her life and she has to share or take other thought which is not being alone.
Being 'Alone' within you is so divinely philosophical that you cannot have it when you share (your thoughts or engaging some one else's thought ).
Maybe that's why all the religious leader went on meditation with themselves to find/search their own 'Alone'.

Lyric Correction:The chorus isn't "how do I get you alone" - it's "how do I get TO alone". She's singing, clearly, about how she was ok being alone before she met him, but now the prospect is utterly incomprehensible. How can she get to that place again? Plus, she's afraid to be there, because she now knows how lonely she was before. See this same error all over the web. Have the song, and SURE about this. Really needs correction. The way it is, you lose the depth of her despair.

General Comment:To me, this song is about someone who typically loves being single and has never really fallen for anyone before. --"Till now, I always got by on my own; I never really cared until I met you." But they don't know how to approach the person --"How do I get you alone?" and tell them how they feel --"But the secret is still my own; & my love for you is still unknown." But I think the person they're falling for is someone they've been slowly falling for over a period of time. --"You don't know how how long I have wanted to touch your lips and hold you tight." Eventually, the person who is singing the song decides to tell the other person how they feel. --"You don't know how long I have waited; And I was gonna tell you tonight." But somehow, they couldn't, and they're still Alone.

General Comment:Heart is an extraordinary band.

The lyrics to this song represents a woman's anguish about being in a close friendship with a guy and seemingly has unrequited feelings.

She lives alone... has for years & had been content with her life & didn't care about being single or without any romantic relationships but her friend has stirred deep emotions & longing she hasn't experienced in years.

She and him have such a close platonic friendship they often talk nightly on the phone.

She finally worked up the nerve to tell him but he was no where to be found...

She's unsure of his whereabouts & hopes he's not out with another woman in a romantic sense so there's still a possibility he'll come over to stay the night.

She's pined away with this deep secret desire to experience all of him & daydreaming of it hence the lyrics:

"To touch your lips and hold you tight.
You don't know how long I have waited
and I was going to tell you tonight"

It chills her to the bone/frightens her to need another person as much as she needs him... She wants to get him "Alone" & away from other women... Basically she wants to have an everlasting romantic relationship.

General Comment:"Til now, I always got by on my own" is such a powerful line.

This song is about meeting someone that makes you realize you don't want to be alone anymore. I also have a different personal take on this song, although I'm sure it's not what the original artist had in mind. I dated a guy for almost a year -- and we broke up two days before our anniversary, which would be today. This song really expresses the feeling of "how did I ever get by before I met you?" that I felt.
