I hear the ticking of the clock
I'm lying here the room's pitch dark
I wonder where you are tonight
No answer on the telephone
And the night goes by so very slow
Oh I hope that it won't end though
Alone
Till now I always got by on my own
I never really cared until I met you
And now it chills me to the bone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone
You don't know how long I have wanted
To touch your lips and hold you tight, oh
You don't know how long I have waited
And I was going to tell you tonight
But the secret is still my own
And my love for you is still unknown
Alone
Till now I always got by on my own
I never really cared until I met you
And now it chills me to the bone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone
Alone, alone
I'm lying here the room's pitch dark
I wonder where you are tonight
No answer on the telephone
And the night goes by so very slow
Oh I hope that it won't end though
Alone
Till now I always got by on my own
I never really cared until I met you
And now it chills me to the bone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone
You don't know how long I have wanted
To touch your lips and hold you tight, oh
You don't know how long I have waited
And I was going to tell you tonight
But the secret is still my own
And my love for you is still unknown
Alone
Till now I always got by on my own
I never really cared until I met you
And now it chills me to the bone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone
Alone, alone

The person likes solidarity and embrace of being alone. All her thoughts and daydreaming is just something that she only cater for. If someone comes into her life and she has to share or take other thought which is not being alone.
Being 'Alone' within you is so divinely philosophical that you cannot have it when you share (your thoughts or engaging some one else's thought ).
Maybe that's why all the religious leader went on meditation with themselves to find/search their own 'Alone'.
Fact is, I came here to gripe about the non-sequitur of the question, "How do I get you alone?" I, like most everybody, thought that's what it was, but after playing the lyrics in their entirety, I realized the situation didn't really raise that question.
"How do I get you alone," would fit if the singer wanted to get amorous with someone, but was repeatedly stopped by the presence of other people. There is no indication that that is the case; in fact, there is no mention of any other people.
She is alone in her room. She had planned to confess her love for him that night. She tried to call him, he didn't answer. To follow that with "How do I get you alone?" is like... WHAT? "How do I get to alone" makes all the sense, however.
Now, Quangelo, the point you raise suggests the possibility that Nancy and Ann don't know themselves. Maybe they even CHANGED it, as time passed. (They did not write this song.)
The first recorded version was for the TV series "Dreams". I just played it on youtube and I'm pretty clearly hearing "to."
She told me this was her favourite song because she loved the lyrics and told me to lsiten to them
The lyrics to this song represents a woman's anguish about being in a close friendship with a guy and seemingly has unrequited feelings.
She lives alone... has for years & had been content with her life & didn't care about being single or without any romantic relationships but her friend has stirred deep emotions & longing she hasn't experienced in years.
She and him have such a close platonic friendship they often talk nightly on the phone.
She finally worked up the nerve to tell him but he was no where to be found...
She's unsure of his whereabouts & hopes he's not out with another woman in a romantic sense so there's still a possibility he'll come over to stay the night.
She's pined away with this deep secret desire to experience all of him & daydreaming of it hence the lyrics:
"To touch your lips and hold you tight.
You don't know how long I have waited
and I was going to tell you tonight"
It chills her to the bone/frightens her to need another person as much as she needs him... She wants to get him "Alone" & away from other women... Basically she wants to have an everlasting romantic relationship.
This song is about meeting someone that makes you realize you don't want to be alone anymore. I also have a different personal take on this song, although I'm sure it's not what the original artist had in mind. I dated a guy for almost a year -- and we broke up two days before our anniversary, which would be today. This song really expresses the feeling of "how did I ever get by before I met you?" that I felt.
