It's been so long
Since I've felt the heat of the sun on my paw
You're the one who knows me best
Put your things, put your plan to the test
You're a smile from the street
You hold my heart in my hands, well, I'll be
Oh, you're always on the decline
You take another sip of wine

A toast to us
You're the one with the stars
Ah*

- short solo -

You held the sign for the one that you are
That you
That you
That you
That you

- long solo -

You're ...
You're the one in the sky
When you go
You know you're where the planets grow
You're in the sun
I'll face it
To go where you're home
Oh ...

General Comment:Yeah the song is definetly about River. It's a nice piece.

Alot of Niandra Lades was done during the recording of Blood Sugar Sex Magik from what I hear, and that there was only one song that was recorded after John quit the band, which was "Running Away into you"

John said in an interview as well that Smile from the streets you hold was a compilation of stuff recorded years prior that was left out and that there wasn't enough space to put on Niandra Lades.

Because I've heard several times that John hadn't played a guitar in like forever in 1998 when he rejoined the Chili Peppers, and that was from various sources, wikipedia.org, and Scar Tissue, so it must have been atleast 3 or 4 years that he had disbanded his guitars for drug money. I keep hearing that Enter a Uh and Nigger Song were recorded in 1997, but then again I hear that John hadn't played a guitar in like forever. maybe a year means like.. forever.

    Who knows.

General Comment:Written and dedicated to River Phoenix, the second half was added after his death. It was cut down into two parts on some editions of the record, the first part when Phoenix was alive and the second after he died. Smile was a compilation of songs from 1986-1997. I remember [in an interview] he was talking about how he wished that River P. had not been born because he wasn't happy with his life, and how he was now in a better place. And somthing about not haveing anyone to "play with". I'll try and find the interview where he talked about it.

General Comment:This song was recorded during the same time as the songs off of Niandra LaDes, which was when River was still alive. He didn't put it on Niandra LaDes because of lack of space... If it is to anybody it is Hillel. This is the extended version I assume because there are two copies of Smile out there and one of them divides this song into two parts giving the album 18 tracks. I recently got this version of smile, but I was wondering is it suppose to cut out like that in the ending seems like there should have been something more. His voice gets all deep and than it just suddenly cuts out...

General Comment:I don't think its for River, cuz River makes an appearance on the album in the song 'height down'. Maybe he died before it got released so who knows.
