Lyrics for Konstantine as interpreted by MusicEqualsLife

Konstantine Lyrics
I can't imagine all the people that you know
And the places that you go
When the lights are turned down low
And I don't understand all the things you've seen
But I'm slipping in between
You and your big dreams
It's always you
In my big dreams

And you tell me that it's over
Wake up lying in a patch of four leaf clover
And you're restless, and I'm naked
You've got to get out
You can't stand to see me shaking, no
Could you let me go?
I didn't think so

And you don't want to be here in the future
So you say the present's just a pleasant
Interruption to the past
And you don't want to look much closer
Because you're afraid to find out all this hope
You had sent into the sky by now had crashed
And it did
Because of me

And then you bring me home
Afraid to find out that you're alone
And I'm sleeping in your living room
But we don't have much room to live

I had these dreams in them I learned to play guitar
Maybe cross the country
Become a rock star
And there was hope in me that I could take you there
But damnit, you're so young
Well, I don't think I care
And if I hurt you
Then I'm sorry
Please don't think that this was easy

Then you'd bring me home
Because we both know what it's like to be alone
And I'm dreaming in your living room
But we don't have much room to live

And Konstantine is walking down the stairs
Doesn't she look good
Standing in her underwear?
And I was thinking
What I was thinking
We've been drinking and it doesn't get me anywhere

My Konstantine came walking down the stairs
And all that I could do is touch her long blonde hair
And I've been thinking
It hurts me thinking that these nights when we were drinking
No, they never got us anywhere, no

This is because I can spell confusion with a 'k'
And I can like it
It's to dying in another's arms and why I had to try it
It's to Jimmy Eat World and those nights in my car
When the first star you see may not be a star
I'm not your star
Isn't that what you said
What you thought this song meant

And if this is what it takes
Just to lie with my mistakes
And live with what I did to you
All the hell I put you through
I always catch the clock
It's 11:11
And now you want to talk
It's not hard to dream
You'll always be my Konstantine

My Konstantine, they'll never hurt you like I do
No, they'll never hurt you like I do
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no

This is to a girl who got into my head
With all the pretty things she did
Hey, you know
You keep me up in bed
This is to a girl who got into my head
With all these fucked up things I did
Hey, maybe, baby
You could keep me up in bed
My Konstantine
You spin around me like a dream
We played out on this movie screen
And I said
Did you know I missed you?
Did you know I missed you?
Did you know I missed you?
Did you know I missed you?
Did you know I missed you?
Did you know I missed you?
Did you know I missed you?
I miss you

And then you bring me home
And we'll go to sleep, but this time not alone, no, no
And you'll kiss me in your living room
I know
You'll miss me in your living room
Because these nights I think maybe that
I'll miss you in my living room
We don't have much room
I said does anybody need that room?
Because we all need a little more room
To live

My Konstantine

I Didn't go through all 1600+ comments of this, but of the ones i saw there wasn't much of an interpretation. I get the impression that this song is about obviously a relationship, that for some reason or another isn't working out and they know they can't be together and it drives them crazy. They lose all their progress of trying to learn to live their lives without each other by getting drunk and hooking up...its not getting them anywhere. And they just find themselves in a never ending cycle. Pretty fucked up actually.

This is my favorite song and has been since the day I heard it. There is something about this song that just makes you... I don't even know how to explain it. There is something magical about Konstantine that I could never fully understand or explain. This song makes me cry every time I hear it and ever since I heard it 7 years ago I have never once gotten tired of it, unlike so many other songs. I have listened to this song for hours and hours on repeat and I will never get over how simply amazing it is. Andrew McMahon is by far my favorite musician and lyricist because of this song and so many of his other songs whether they be from Something Corporate or Jack's Mannequin.

konstantine is spelled with a c. Constantine means "died", but the girl hes talking abouts name probablly starts with a K. In the song Andrew mentions how he can spell confusion with a k and he can like it, that shows he can spell constantine with a k. Its about him breaking up with his girlfriend

i cried when andrew was diagnosed with cancer :(... his voice is amazing, i played this song at my college audition and thanks to the awsome catchy piano riff and extremely emotional vocals i got accepted, and i owe it all to one of (if not) the most inspirational band ever something coorporate, hmmm its been just over a year now since i started college, i think i might play this song at my next gig :D, like a tribute.. lol it sounds kinda awkward with an english accent but fuck it, its still jolly good!! :)

I don't even want to begin to go into detail about how much I love this song. The live version from their DVD is fanfuckingtastic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQ9CIkqicV8 . It's so great to watch him. If I was gay I would so do Andrew McMahon. Heh, I probably would regardless.

The way I interpret it is the singer and his girlfriend have been through a difficult long term relationship, broken up and got back together several times and this time they've ended it for good (I'm thinking she broke up with him)

"I can't imagine all the people that you know...."
He's thinking about what she's doing without him and who she knows and where she goes. It's like he's jealous and hoping she's not seeing other guys. He feels like he is getting in the way of all she wants to do in life.

"And you tell me that it's over
Wake up lying in a patch of four leaf clover"

This is about them breaking up and then getting back together, he feels it's down to luck.

"And you don't want to be here in the future
So you say the present's just a pleasant
Interruption to the past..."

She is less committed than he is, she doesn't want this to be her entire life. He feels guilty that her dreams came crashing down, thinks it's because of him tying her down.

"I had these dreams in them I learned to play guitar
Maybe cross the country
Become a rock star"

He had plans for the future which involved her, he wanted to stay together and accomplish their dreams together.

"And I was thinking
What I was thinking
We've been drinking and it doesn't get me anywhere"

They still get close when they drink. This bit sounds like he's about to suggest getting back together but cuts off and realises they're both drunk and it doesn't mean anything.

"This is because I can spell confusion with a 'k'
And I can like it" - She confuses him but he likes it because it's her.

"It's to dying in another's arms and why I had to try it
It's to Jimmy Eat World and those nights in my car" - Reminiscing about the past and all the memories he has of them.

"I always catch the clock
It's 11:11"
11:11 is meant to be the time to make a wish, so he's wishing she'll take him back.

"My Konstantine, they'll never hurt you like I do"
He hurts her but he is still the only one for her, nobody else will feel the same as he does for her.

Did you know I missed you?
Did you know I missed you?
Did you know I missed you?
Did you know I missed you?
Did you know I missed you?
Did you know I missed you?
Did you know I missed you?
I miss you

(That's the part that I usually start crying at :P)

"I said does anybody need that room?
Because we all need a little more room
To live"

They broke up because they were tying each other down and neither of them had freedom to live, but now he realises that nobody is ever free whether or not they are in a relationship, and they will both sacrifice this freedom they think they have so that they can be together again.

I think that's all I got from it. It's a very complex song and I guess different people interper it depending on their own experiences and what it reminds them of.

I could not love a song more than I love this song.

It's perfect. Absolutely, and completely.

I don't think I need to go into detail on what it's about. His love for a girl that doesn't last because of mistakes he makes. But he loved her, loves her. Like everything in live and love, its complicated.

Amazing.

When he says he misses her in his living room, is living room maybe a metaphor for his life? his living room could mean literally his living, room.

This song is beautiful. Every time you listen to it - it makes you think deeper into the lyrics.

If I could get one thing before I die, I would want to have a guy I'm in love with sing this to me. I think Andrew is a lyrical genius. <3 There's no doubt about that. I cried listening to this song, even before I knew the true meaning behind the lyrics :D Even though this song is sad, it is still beautiful at the same time.

He puts so much emotion into the song. When he says he awakes in patch of four leaf clovers, I agree with the person that mentioned him not actually waking up in a field - but really waking up in some clover boxers. The rest of this song is about how he cheats on his girlfriend Krystal & she takes him back, but she keeps throwing it back in his face - it gets to the point where he knows it will never be the same between him and his Konstantine.

Also I've read a lot of peoples thoughts about how he says Those nights drinking didn't get us anywhere - & it occurred to me that maybe he just wanted sex from her ? I'm not sure during the whole song he sounds so confused between loving crystal - & not quite sure of how he should feel after cheating on her.

Imagine how heartbreaking it would be if you were Krystal the girl this song it about? Or Kelly, Andrew's wife. Knowing that he wrote this epic song about his first love, that nothing will ever top.

This reminds me of all the nights my brother would drive me around town just listening to music and going no where at all. the thing is...we both have history to this song. we each have our story and how it relates to us. we'd sit there for hours singing Konstantine together, i guess you could say it gave us hope and comfort to know neither of us were alone in what we went threw. its weird how a single song can mean so much to so many people. look at all the comments on here...each one of us, with a story of our own.

I think this is about a guy who's seeing a girl called Konstantine who craves bigger and better things all the time and says she is leavingg for the big city, after which he is absolutely floored and doesn't know how to go on. One night together she leaves, ''and your restless and im naked'' ''you can't stand to see me shaking''. She tries to justify herself, but then sees all her hope in him was unjustified.
However, once she leaves, she realises that despite his flaws, she cannot live without him and brings him back to her studio apartment. He is delighted with this, but she doesn't want to get physical too fast, ''we've been drinking and it hasn't got me anywhere''. He pictures her standing in her underwear, and look back on the whole relationship- the good ppoints and the bad points and sees how badly he has treated her. ''they'll never hurt you like i do'' ''all these fucked up things i did''.
After this, he realises that he doesn't just like her, he is in LOVE with her. And their relationsip restarts with both of them living in her tiny apartment.

Try listening to this song stoned ... wow.

So the song is obviously about his true loved whom he cheated on (probably drunkenly), and how she was willing to get back together with him, but it was never the same for her. But she is his "constant" (Konstantine) because she always comes back to him, and in his head is always her ... though he knows it will never be the way it was before he cheated. She is now back and forth with him, but everytime thinks he is back with her for good she starts stuff with him about the infidelity .. "im not your star", or making him sleep on the couch ... but of course she always comes back downstairs to have sex with him, but the next day he'll wake up after an amazing night only to find that she still can't forget him cheating ... it will constantly be a vicious cycle, but he loves her so much that if that is how he can be with her, then he will take what he can get.

This song has to be by far one of the greatest song's by something corporate. The piano in this song is beautiful. This song, i feel, has so much meaning and feeling put into it. I have heard it is written about a Stripper, irregardless this song is inspiration.

This song makes me sad because I've never found my Konsatantine, I never even had a boyfriend for that matter. I'm already 19 and just haven't found the right guy yet and I'm kind of scare and these songs only make it more intimidating for me.

*sigh* oh well, my time will come, meanwhile I will just continue to enjoy this song. :)

I don't think I'm the first nor will I ever be the last.
this song reminds me of my first love.
I will forever relate this song to him, and it tears me apart everytime I hear it.
After all, you never..EVER forget your first love.
I love SoCo and the fans, we have this connection to every single one of their songs, therefore we share this connection to each other.
I love SoCo, and I hope each of you find deep and true meaning within this song even if it brings you to tears and it did me and MANY MANY others. Truly amazing, the power of SoCo. I just hope this song lives through us, forever, and...ever...through our children and grandchildren. And yes, I'm serious. This song is super powerful, and we must keep it alive!!

konstantine means your first true love. andrew wrote this song about the love of his life. it hurts him continually to leave her for tours and he wishes he could be with her, catching the clock at 11:11. he references the band "Jimmy Eats World" cause that was "their" band. memories attached to it. this song has andrew's heart poured out into it. this is the ultimate love song written for his ultimate love.

I know this song is about Christina, (that's her name, correct?)
but I find it ironic how many ties it has to the city of Constantinople named after Constantine. Constantinople was the Christian capitol after Rome stopped prosecuting Christian according to law,and Constatine declared it so but there were many anti-Christ groups. 11:11 was a common meeting times for such groups (I always catch the clock | It's 11:11 | And now you want to talk)
Constantine was also rumored to have collected four leaf clovers before his Christian time of reign for his servants and witches to prepare potions for him with, Wake up lying in a patch of four leaf clover, could be taken as he struck gold by selling a bunch of four leaf clovers to Constantine.
I don't know, great song, love song of course, but the unintended historical references are intruiging when you think about them....

anyways, I love Something Corporate to death, I only wish they would get back together and make more music ! Jack's Mannequin is great, but he doesn't seem to have quite as much passion in his music as he did with Something Corporate, but thats just my opinion....
